Nokia N9 countdown timer disappears confusing early wannabe MeeGo adopters

Nokia N9 countdown timer disappears confusing early wannabe MeeGo adopters

The Nokia N9 has been graced with a lot of attention for an experimental device running on a platform doomed in the long-term and it even got its own countdown timer page at Nokia Sweden. But now - just as early MeeGo wannabe adopters started the 45-day countdown until September 23rd, the official N9 release date for Sweden - the Finns pulled the timer from the website leaving a swiftly shrinking user base confused.
What could this mean? The first and most realistic guess seems to be that Espoo has delayed the Nokia N9, but removing the timer might also mean that the company is ready to release the phone earlier.
Or was it just a technical issue? We guess that the answer should come soon, b...

ITC to investigate Apple's second patent suit against HTC

ITC to investigate Apple's second patent suit against HTC

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AppleHTC

The U.S. International Trade Commission on Monday said it would investigate a second patent complaint Apple filed recently against HTC. The complaint seeks to ban the importation and sale of multiple HTC devices that Apple alleges are infringing on its intellectual property. Three companies will be targeted in the Commission’s investigation — HTC Corp., HTC America, Inc. and Exedea, Inc. — and a target date for the completion of the investigation will be set within 45 days. The ITC ruled in a separate case last month that HTC infringes on two Apple patents, and HTC said it would appeal the judgement. Apple executives reportedly claimed recently that they are willing to settle various patent ...

Kyocera S3015 for Sprint has been spotted at the FCC

Kyocera S3015 for Sprint has been spotted at the FCC

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

While digging through the FCC's database today, we stumbled upon a Kyocera cellphone that has just recently been given the thumbs up by the commision. The handset bears the S3015 model name and judging by the documents in its filing, Sprint is the carrier which the device is headed to. However, are we dealing with a smartphone here or with something a bit more basic? Well, it seems like the clues that we have so far are all in favor of the latter.
What we know about the Kyocera S3015 is that it is a dual-band CDMA phone with a Bluetooth radio on board. It also packs a 870mAh battery, which is a solid hint that the device would likely belong to the feature phone kind. That is pretty much all ...

New Google search app for Android gets outed, pulled

New Google search app for Android gets outed, pulled

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

While not in the realm of some of Sony Ericsson's gaffes -- as far as pulled images and news, that is -- Google did its level best by throwing up a new version of its integrated search app for Android and then promptly pulling it. New features in the magically disappearing app include: a svelte new interface with categorized results which puts web hits up top then contacts and more in the rows below. Also added is the ability to long press search history to remove questionable search items and country-specific results in countries with Google domains -- think Google.ca, Google.ch, and so on. This may be part of the big search monster's ongoing efforts to "evolve the Google design and experie...

T-Mobile G-Slate is getting its Honeycomb 3.1 tasting tomorrow

T-Mobile G-Slate is getting its Honeycomb 3.1 tasting tomorrow

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Not to be forgotten amongst the heap of newer Honeycomb tablets that are on the market, the 3D video recording capable T-Mobile G-Slate is more than likely to start receiving its Honeycomb 3.1 tasting tomorrow; August 10th.
Actually, LG says that they’ll be rolling it out some time today, but device owners would more than likely see it come in tomorrow – especially when it’s being rolled out in waves. Either way, it’s expected to arrive over the course of the next few days for the majority of people.
As we all know, Android 3.1 Honeycomb isn’t a dramatic upgrade, but rather, T-Mobile G-Slate owners will find the host of improvements to be more than satisfactory in the near term. In fact, it ...

FCC halts AT&T's acquisition of Qualcomm spectrum, bundles it with T-Mobile merger review

FCC halts AT&T's acquisition of Qualcomm spectrum, bundles it with T-Mobile merger review

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

AT&T's LTE spectrum acquisitions just hit a minor bump in the federal road. In a recently released FCC statement, Wireless Bureau chief Rick Kaplan announced the decision to stop the 180 day review clock on the telco's proposed takeover of Qualcomm's 700MHz spectrum. The $1.9 billion deal, inked last December, isn't getting the regulatory axe, but due to a "number of related issues" concerning spectrum overlap with the still unapproved T-Mobile merger, the commission is bundling the two into one future review. Maybe it's time the carrier's industry backers pen another letter of support to Chairman Genachowski.

ZTE Monte Carlo arrives a month early, now available on Orange UK

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Okay, we'll just come out and say it: in the hierarchy of classy names, Skate doesn't hold a candle to Monte Carlo. As the flagship of ZTE's lineup at Mobile World Congress last February, it feels much more appropriately titled with Orange UK's branding. No matter what you want to call it, however, the handset's now available on the carrier's online store -- no doubt a surprise, since we weren't expecting the phone to show up on sale for at least another month. For a device aimed at the budget-conscious, it's got some worthy specs: it's adorned with a 4.3-inch WVGA display, an 800MHz CPU, Android 2.3 and a five megapixel shooter. Will it whisk you away to a luxurious city lined with beaches ...

Verizon is cracking down on those who tether illegally with unofficial apps

Who knows anymore if consumers are in complete control of their data plan, well, that’s because we’ve seen carriers of late really push up the ante when it comes to cracking down on illegal tethering. With smartphones permeating across all lifestyles and landscapes, data consumption has exploded at an alarming rate – thus, giving some carriers plenty of headaches in maintaining their infrastructure.
If you’re one of the people on Verizon that “tether illegally” with the aid of unofficial apps, you might want to know that Big Red might be reigning down on your parade very soon. In fact, they’re doing whatever they can to combat all of this by redirecting users who tether unofficially to a Ver...

Motorola wants same deal as Nokia from Microsoft

Motorola wants same deal as Nokia from Microsoft

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

At a recent industry conference Motorola Mobility’s Sanjay Jha has confirmed once again that they are open to developing a Windows Phone 7 handset.
"I think we’re completely open to the notion of Windows as a platform," Jha said in an appearance at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference.
He confirmed however that they would only do it if they achieved special partner status like Nokia has, saying otherwise that at present "clearly, all of our focus today is on Android."
Jha was still waiting to see which OS will shake it for the 3rd place, saying only one of Windows Phone 7, webOS and RIM can survive.
While Motorola has seen an early revival from adopting Android, the compan...

Visa said that it will be ramping up its contactless mobile payment plans, so it looks like NFC payments will actually be a big force in the United States.
We’ve been talking about mobile payments for a long time here but nothing has really happened to make paying for a train ride as easy as it is in places like Japan. Now that all the major credit card companies are on board, we may finally see some traction. Visa said it will expand its chip mirgration in the United States, work with vendors to adopt this, expand the processing infrastructure with an emphasis on security and establish a counterfeit fraud liability shift.
“By encouraging investments in EMV contact and contactless chip techn...

For a brief period, Apple becomes the most valuable U.S. company

For a brief period, Apple becomes the most valuable U.S. company

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple earlier today briefly overtook ExxonMobil to become the most valuable U.S. company trading on U.S. markets. With a market cap of $341.5 billion, the Cupertino based company had a $100 million higher value than the New York based oil and gas company. What makes this an amazing achievement is that ExxonMobil brings in four times the annual revenue that Apple does.
It hasn't always been this way for Apple. The return of Steve Jobs and the quick success of the iMac followed by the iPod and the world-wide phenomenon called the Apple iPhone brought Apple's stock well into triple-digit territory. The Apple iPad simply added fuel to the fire and the company recently hit a 52 week high of $404....

Apple Successfully Blocks Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 From Europe

Apple Successfully Blocks Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 From Europe

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Apple and Samsung have been in the heat of an intense legal battle across several countries, but it looks like Apple has taken the upper hand. We recently heard that Samsung had decided not to sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet in Australia due to the legal issues with Apple. This time around, the tablet has been blocked from being sold in Europe, giving us a clear sign that things are tipping in Apple’s favor.
The issue originally started when the iPhone maker accused Samsung of “slavishly copying” the iPhone and iPad design, and that the Korean manufacturer lacked any originality or innovation. Samsung returned fire by suing Apple for infringing on several wireless patents. The two ha...

FCC frees up to 650MHz of backhaul spectrum to accelerate rural 4G deployment

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Busting down a critical obstacle in the deployment of mobile broadband in rural areas, the FCC announced plans to make up to 650MHz of spectrum available for microwave wireless backhaul. This particular block, which will be shared with cable TV relay (CARS) and broadcast auxiliary services (BAS), spans across half of the land mass of the US and blankets roughly 10 percent of the total population. The large expense of laying fiber optics at rural cell sites has been a barrier most companies haven't been able to break through; by implementing the use of microwave wireless backhaul, however, the government is hopeful this will drive the cost of deployment down, create new jobs and accelerate th...

Patently ridiculous: Apple granted patent for something it was already sued for infringing upon

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Apple won a slew of new patents today, although only three of them directly impact mobile devices, and of those, two seem to be blatantly a part of the "bogus patents" that Google sounded off about recently. We've already covered how the U.S. patent system needs an overhaul, so with this news we'll try not to get too deep into how absurd the new Apple patents are, but we will count this as the first part of an ongoing series covering the ridiculous patents granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The new patents related to mobile that Apple has won include patents on: integrated touchscreens, pre-loading data on startup, and visual voicemail.
The patent for integrated touchscr...
