First BlackBerry QNX phone a 4-inch “mini-PlayBook” says analyst

Contrasting rumors over RIM’s QNX smartphone plans for 2012 today, with an RBC Capital Markets analyst suggesting that, rather than the Colt handset tipped earlier this week, the BlackBerry manufacturer’s first device will be a “mini-PlayBook.” The handset, Mike Abramsky suggested in an investor note today, will look like the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook tablet but smaller, using a 4-inch display and a dual-core processor.

Acer Iconia Smart arrives in September, doesn't apologize for being late

Five months is a very long time to wait for the large-handed smartphone addict, but finally there is some good news, everybody! We previewed Acer's massive 4.8-inch phone / tablet hybrid back in February and it looked like it would arrive in the U.S. sometime in April. It's now August and and according to Acer's Facebook page, we still have a month to wait. The phoneblet (Yes, there's already a name) retains the same specs we heard about in February: Snapdragon processor, twin cameras and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. When it finally does arrive, it'll cost Europeans €499 -- around $710.

The Android faithful may be getting their hands on the company’s next mobile operating system sooner than anticipated. If true, we should expect to see the launch of Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich as early as October.
The latest Android rumor comes from BGR who has been tipped off by “a source with knowledge of Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich plans”. Although no solid information is given on the source or the new OS, the rumor does seem like a logical move for Google.

iPhone 4 Theft Charges Dropped for Gizmodos Jason Chen

Remember back a few months ago when the folks at Gizmodo had a large opportunity in purchasing an iPhone 4 weeks before it was released to the public? Turns out they did indeed get in some rather large potential trouble for said incident, but that as of today, San Mateo County prosecutors will no longer be pursuing criminal charges against tech blogger Jason Chen (or any other Gizmodo employees), though the same can’t be said about the man who sold the device TO Chen. March 2010 was the time, the Internet was the place, and the San Mateo County court in California is no longer the venue.

HTC's 'major' news only involves Beats audio

Just hours after promising a "major" news event, HTC chief Peter Chou talked down expectations by revealing the plans ahead of time. The phone maker is investing $300 million into Beats Electronics' audio processing and will build it into future phones and tablets. One HTC device shipping this year would carry Beats audio, Chou said in an AllThingsD interview, without saying what.

BlackBerry Torch 9850, Bold 9930 to hit Sprint on Aug. 21?

Sprint is reportedly ready to launch RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9850 and Bold 9930 within the next two weeks. The carrier recently confirmed plans to launch both devices, however the company did not provide details regarding release timing. Walmart Shutting Down MP3 Store
Like UnlikeWalmart on Wednesday confirmed that it will shut down its MP3 service, effective August 29.
"We recently notified our music partners that we've made a business decision to no longer offer MP3 digital tracks as of August 29, 2011," a spokesman said in a statement. "We'll continue to provide support to our customers who previously purchased digital music through Walmart Music Downloads so they may continue to enjoy and manage their existing WMA files."

LG E730 Optimus Sol leaked [video]

German gadget news site BestBoyZ has gotten its hands on one of LG’s upcoming mid-range handsets, the E730 Optimus Sol. Originally codenamed “Victor,” the device is equipped with a 3.8-inch AMOLED display and a 1GHz processor. The Optimus Sol runs Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) and is loaded with LG’s custom Optimus user interface on top. It is unclear when the Optimus Sol will hit the market but rumor has it Vodafone will offer the device in black and silver when it finally launches. HTC Droid Incredible may not get Gingerbread after all

It may not be official just yet, but according to an HTC customer service representative the HTC Droid Incredible will not be getting its tasting of Android 2.3 Gingerbread despite previous reports that it would.
An eager customer reached out to HTC in regards to the promised Gingerbread upgrade for the original HTC Incredible. The rep responded in a letter and said the Droid Incredible is not on the list of devices slated to receive the update because they only provide updates if it will provide an improved user experience.

Windows Phone 7 to make iOS and Android look outdated says Nokia's president

Nokia president and head of North American operations, Chris Weber (no, not the former NBA star) has laid down the gauntlet. In an interview yesterday, the Nokia executive said that Windows Phone 7 makes iOS and Android look outdated. Weber says the big difference between the platforms is that while iOS and Android are built around apps, Windows Phone 7 is built around a user's contacts making things easier and quicker with some functions requiring fewer steps.
