More Windows Phone showing up in Windows 8

More Windows Phone showing up in Windows 8

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Some recently leaked screen shots of Windows 8 show an ever stronger influence of Windows Phone 7.
The above shot (via Winrumors) over the shoulder of one of their presenters shows a tile-like start menu on the “immersive” UI that appears much more closer to the Windows Phone 7 version, with multiple tiles tightly grouped together. Previous versions from earlier this year showed many fewer tiles spaced further apart.
This shot above (from this Microsoft video) from the “Classic” UI still shows a metro-fied menu and date and time widget, indicating in Windows 8 you will never be far from the Windows Phone 7 look, even if you spend most of your time in the “Classic” UI.
Irrespective of how W...

Radio Shack to give its customers a thrill; the LG Thrill 4G will be offered for $79.99 on contract

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

News about the LG Thrill 4G has been coming quickly now that AT&T has confirmed the September 4th launch of the 3D enabled phone as we reported. While AT&T plans on offering the LG Thrill 4G for $99.99 with a 2-year contract, a leaked picture of a Radio Shack internal document shows that the retailer plans on offering the phone for $79.99 with the 2-year pact. Without the contract, the Shack will ask you for $549.99 to get a Thrill 4G.
At $79.99, Radio Shack would match the price that Target is expected to ask for the phone, as we informed you. The stereoscopic 3D effects do not require any special glasses and the handset comes loaded with 3 games, N.O.V.A, Let's Golf 2 and Asphalt 6. In the...

Iranian government said to be using MITM hack to spy on Gmail, other Google services

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Hacker groups like Anonymous and LulzSec capture the bulk of mainstream media’s attention when it comes to hackers these days, but it looks like the Iranian government may have recently pulled off an attack that trumps both hacker groups and then some. According to reports, Iranian hackers with ties to the government have managed to executive an MITM attack that compromises Google’s SSL security. An MITM attack, or Man-In-The-Middle attack, is a cyberattack that allows an attacker to covertly intercept or even modify data as it is being transmitted between two computers over the Internet. Using a certificate issued on July 10th by Dutch SSL certificate authority DigiNotar, Iranian hackers ha...

Sprint Galaxy S II (Epic 4G Touch) outed before announcement

Sprint Galaxy S II (Epic 4G Touch) outed before announcement

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

We’re only a few hours away until Samsung takes the stage and announces the Galaxy S II for the US of A. Just in case you needed a little more confirmation before the official announcement, some slides of the Epic 4G Touch have appeared in a Samsung online training manual.
We already knew that T-Mobile’s version of the GSII, the Hercules, would get a screen bump to 4.5 inches from 4.3, and it looks like the Sprint variant will also gain a couple of fractions of an inch. According to the training slides, the screen is actually 4.52 inches of Super AMOLED Plus goodness, and we’re just fine with that.
The Galaxy S II is Samsung most popular phone to date, selling over five million units before ...

Mozilla launches its long awaited Firefox app for Honeycomb tablets

Mozilla launches its long awaited Firefox app for Honeycomb tablets

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Mozilla announced the launch of its long-awaited Firefox app for Honeycomb tablets, which will “show the evolution of its phone based predecessor,” with some added enhancements. This new app, allows users to take advantage of the “Awesome Bar,” a tool that provides quick access to your favorite sites and bookmarks from within the URL bar.
Besides its Android Honeycomb look, app users will find no change in trademark Firefox UI details like the back button. Another noteworthy enhancement is the cool “tabs” interface that switches from sidebar to drop-down tabs menu based on which way you’re holding the device; the company put in a lot of effort in hiding all of its UI elements to free up the ...

Motorola Pro+ announced - Just a slightly beefier Droid Pro?

Motorola Pro+ announced - Just a slightly beefier Droid Pro?

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Verizon was first to get it, and Sprint just did but now AT&T will soon have its own version of Motorola’s wannabe BlackBerry phone. The Droid Pro or Xprt aren’t the worst phone’s we’ve seen but both are lacking in the spec department. Luckily for AT&T, the Motorola Pro+ has seen a couple of spec-bumps.
The Pro+ really isn’t anything special. It ships with more memory (4GB vs 2GB), Android 2.3 Gingerbread instead of Android 2.2 Froyo, and Gorilla Glass now adorns the face of the display but that hardly sounds like much of an upgrade if you ask me. From the looks of it, the battery has actually shrunk from 1860 mAh to 1600 mAh, which is just another reason to start scratching your head. T-Mob...

Samsung Vitality with Muve Music serenades itself to Cricket

Samsung Vitality with Muve Music serenades itself to Cricket

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

If you remember the Samsung Admire at MetroPCS, then the manufacturer's Vitality handset will look mighty familiar. It's coming to Cricket and will join the Suede (a feature phone) as the network's only smartphone with Muve Music. Like the Admire, it features an 800MHz CPU, 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, a 3.2MP camera and runs stock Gingerbread. While its price and release date remain elusive, we're told the requisite plan will ring in at $65 per month -- a spendy leap for the network that goes chirp in the night. Perhaps that's the rub when you combine an Android plan with unlimited song downloads, ringtones and ringback tones. Hey, nobody ever said it'd be cheap to be law-abiding.

BlackBerry Torch 9860 burns up Telus for $99.99

BlackBerry Torch 9860 burns up Telus for $99.99

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Not far behind Bell, Telus has launched the BlackBerry Torch 9860, RIM’s first all-touchscreen phone in a long time. The pricetag is sitting at $99.99 on a three-year contract, for $549.99 with no strings attached.
The BlackBerry Torch 9860 has the biggest, sharpest screen we’ve seen on a BlackBerry to date, measuring 3.7 inches and 800 x 480 pixels. The 5 megapixel camera on the back can shoot 720p video and has an LED flash for low-light conditions, and the whole package is powered by a 1.2 GHz processor with 768 MB of RAM. The software is a modest iterative upgrade on the old BlackBerry OS, including a few goodies like augmented reality support, a 3D-capable graphics rendering engine, and...

Microsoft plans to bring back "Find on Page" feature in IE9, but it might come much later

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

For any Windows Phone 7 user out there, it might not be something used on a consistent basis, but the “Find on Page” feature with IE8 is nevertheless something handy to have on. However, it seems that Microsoft decided to remove this feature entirely with IE9 in Windows Phone Mango.
Fortunately, Microsoft has heard the complaints from numerous people and plans to bring back the feature sometime down the road. Well, the good news is that IE9 is capable of being upgraded independently of the operating system – meaning, it can potentially be brought back with some sort of update. However, it’s also possible that they will simply hold off from doing that, and instead, bring it back with the arri...

HP may resurrect TouchPad, head of PC business says

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

On August 18th, HP announced that it was killing off its webOS devices business and considering a possible spin-off of its personal systems group (PSG). The head of HP’s PC business, executive vice president Todd Bradley, discussed the TouchPad and his company’s PC business with Reuters, explaining that a spin-off could be the “best value” for HP’s investors instead of an outright sale to competitors such as Acer or Lenovo. “Regardless of what happens, we’re the largest PC company in the world,” Bradley explained. “We need everybody energized, and while this isn’t business as usual, we need people to go out and sell products every day,” he said, noting that HP will still remain a major custo...

ZTE meets fierce competition in the mobile industry, half yearly profits decline for the first time in four years

Chinese ZTE entered the top 5 phone makers in the world with a splash last year and it’s continuing its growth with revenue increasing quickly in the first half of the year, but at a costly price as it net profits declined for the first time in four years. Revenue in the first semester amounted to some $5.7 billion (37.3 billion yuan), a 21.5% growth year on year, but net profit was down 12.4% to 769.3 million yuan compared to 877.5 million in the first half of 2010.
At its home Chinese market, ZTE is facing fierce competition from Huawei Technologies, but ZTE has recently upped the ante on the global scene with aggressive pricing trying to get traction among the top five and sell cheaper th...

Initial AT&T 4G LTE tests show it's not all that fast, HSPA+ is faster

AT&T, who was recently identified as the worst wireless operator in the United States by J.D. Power, hasn’t officially yet turned on their 4G LTE network, but that hasn’t stopped two technology journalists from discovering that Chicago residents, using the 4G LTE enabled AT&T Elevate WiFi hotspot, can hop on this as yet to be launched network and run some speed tests. The first set of results, from The Boy Genius Report, have download speeds topping out at around 13 Mbps and upload speeds getting close to 2 Mbps. The second set of results, from This is my next, are a bit slower, coming in at 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. To give you some comparison, using the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0, which is capab...

Samsung “Omnia W” to have a 1.4 Ghz processor, NFC?

Samsung “Omnia W” to have a 1.4 Ghz processor, NFC?

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

SamFirmware, who is a good source of pre-release Samsung ROMs, have just tweeted that Samsung’s new Windows Phone 7 handset will feature a 1.4 Ghz processor and support NFC.
They also mention the device has a 3.7 inch screen, making it likely they are talking about the rumoured Samsung Omnia W, which according to earlier leaks have a 512 Mb RAM, 3.7 inch screen, and 5 megapixel camera, decidedly low-end specs for 2011, not to mention 2012.
Having a 1.4 Ghz processor and NFC will go some way to make up for it, and if it is wrapped up in a sleek and slim shell it may well be a worthy successor for the Samsung Omnia 7 after all.
