DROID BIONIC teaser campaign begins

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 by MG1

Verizon Wireless just had a high-security briefcase hand delivered to our office, and it sure looks like the Motorola DROID BIONIC hype machine has started. First off, the briefcase is covered with the DROID logo, and there’s also a plaque on the briefcase that says that this is #2 of four pieces in existence. Sure enough, a visit to www.droiddoes.com/bionic allowed us to input a special code engraved on the object inside the case. So what is inside the briefcase? Check out our gallery below for images and hit the jump for the text engraved on the inside of the case.

Verizon offer up early upgrades, in preparation for new phones

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

We have good news if you’re a Verizon subscriber. Verizon is offering an early upgrade to many of its customers, giving subscribers a chance to take advantage of the beastly phones slated for this fall. The carrier began sending e-mails to customers to alert them to the change, according to Mobiledia. So, if you’re a Verizon customer eligible for a new phone in September, an early upgrade would be at your disposal, and Big Red is also rewarding others who would have had to wait until May 2012. Not bad if you want to sign your life away for another two years, right?
If you’ve upgraded a phone before, then you know most carriers allow for subscribers to become eligible for an upgrade every 20 ...

While IFA is heating up in Europe, huge news is happening stateside as the US Department of Justice has filed to block AT&T’s planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile over anti-competitive concerns, according to reports appearing almost simultaneously on Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
The DOJ has grounded its filing by saying that “AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low-priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market.” In an official statement on its website, the department clarified that the deal would result in "in higher prices, poorer quality services, fewer choices and fewer innovative products." It also explained that AT&T wa...

BlackBerry Bold 9900 now available at T-Mobile

BlackBerry Bold 9900 now available at T-Mobile

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 by MG1

RIM’s latest batch of BlackBerry smartphones have been gradually working their way out to various carriers over the last few weeks, and now there’s yet another notch to scratch. T-Mobile now has the BlackBerry Bold 9900 on sale for $299.99 on a two-year contract, as expected. That pricetag is a little on the high side, but up here in Canada, Bell has already slashed the price to $100 on a three-year contract, so expect a few cuts in the near future.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is spearheading RIM’s latest efforts, offering a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a 640 x 480 resolution, 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording. The operating system is more or less...

Apple May Have A Web-Based Diagnostics Tool In The Works For iStuff

Apple May Have A Web-Based Diagnostics Tool In The Works For iStuff

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

If ever your iPhone or iPad starts acting wonky, chances are you pack it up and head on over to your nearest Genius Bar. It’s a hassle, but it’s a small price to pay for your beloved iStuff. Ease of use is one of Apple’s key standards for a device, and that extends way past a navigable interface.
That said, Hardmac is reporting that Apple has internally announced a new web-based diagnostics tool for iOS devices that can be used remotely. In other words, future problems with your iPhone or iPod just got a lot easier to fix.
It basically works by sending an email with a URL to the device that’s acting weird. When Safari loads up the URL (which can also be typed in to the browser), the phone wi...

10.1-inch HTC Jetstream hitting AT&T: HTC’s first Honeycomb tablet comes with LTE

10.1-inch HTC Jetstream hitting AT&T: HTC’s first Honeycomb tablet comes with LTE

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 by MG1

The HTC Jetstream, previously referred to as the HTC Puccini, is not only HTC’s first 10.1-inch tablet, but also the company’s first to run on Android 3.1 Honeycomb, tailor-made for tablets. Add to that support for both HSPA+ and LTE, and the company’s capacitive stylus, the HTC Scribe, and you have a pretty powerful combination.
The inclusion of LTE makes it the first AT&T tablet supporting the technology. It won't be particularly useful now as AT&T hasn't yet commercially rolled out its LTE network, but it makes the device future proof. The price however is set accordingly - the tablet could be yours for a hefty $699 and that's after you sign a 2-year contract. The HTC Jetstream release d...

Nokia's Tero Ojanperä leaving to work on the Vision+ Windows Phone apps project

Nokia's Tero Ojanperä leaving to work on the Vision+ Windows Phone apps project

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia's Tero Ojanperä, who had been with the company more than twenty years, is now leaving to work on a new venture fund. The Vision+ Windows Phone apps project is receiving seed money from Nokia to attract developers who will create apps for "Nokia supported platforms, especially for the Windows Phone platform”.
Vision+ will also dabble in some other hip activities like renewable energy, clean water and a mission to Mars (ok, we made the last one up), but the main purpose of its existence seems to be spearheading Windows Phone 3rd party software development for now, which will undoubtedly help Nokia in the longer term.
Tero Ojanperä will step down at the end of September. "The new respons...

White Samsung Galaxy W caught in the wild

White Samsung Galaxy W caught in the wild

Posted on Sep 01, 2011 by MG1

Of all the new Android phones Samsung has recently announced, it seems the Galaxy W will be their biggest seller, with Three UK already adding it to its “Coming Soon” pages. Specs wise, it sits somewhere between the original Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, though boasting a smaller 3.7-inch screen. In that sense, I guess the W is made for people who think phones with 4-inch and bigger displays are too bulky to carry around. I can understand the argument, though I don’t agree with it completely.
Anyway, the news is that in addition to the “default” black version, Sammy’s “W”onder phone will also be available in white, or at least the image above suggests so. I like white phones and can see the Kor...

Netgear's WNDR 3800 with ReadySHARE, the roll-your-own cloud service

Netgear's WNDR 3800 with ReadySHARE, the roll-your-own cloud service

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Netgear's stable of dark gray rectangles of joy has swelled to include the premium edition WNDR 3800, which comes with two features uncommon to most home routers. First is the Clear Channel Selector, which analyzes the wireless traffic and switches to the quietest channel to prevent dropouts. Second is ReadySHARE Cloud -- using the router's USB port, you can attach an external HDD and access the data anywhere there's an internet connection. The only downside is the iOS / Android app for the service costs an extra $2.99, which seems unnecessary considering you're already paying $180 for the device itself. There's a press release in it for you, so why not take a wander down after the break?

WikiLeaks Screws Up and Endangers Its Sources

WikiLeaks Screws Up and Endangers Its Sources

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Supporters of the WikiLeaks organization unwittingly released unedited versions of U.S. displomatic cables onto the Internet, potentially putting several lives at risk of retaliation. These are the same cables that were made public in November 2010, except the originals were edited to protect the names and identities of informants.
According to German website Spiegel Online, the screw up is the result of an ongoing dispute between WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former German spokesman Daniel Domscheit-Berg. Before going public with the cables in November 2010, Assange stored the information in a password protected file buried in a WikiLeaks server and shared the password with an extern...

Facebook bounty program earns security researchers $40,000

Facebook bounty program earns security researchers $40,000

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

A new bug bounty program launched by Facebook has spent more than $40,000 in its first 21 days, with one security researcher earning over $7,000 for finding six severe bugs in social networking behemoth's code. Facebook has long been the target of cyber criminals who frequently use the site to sell fake goods, send spam, and even mine personal information thanks to the site's lacklustre and confusing privacy settings.
While Facebook already has an in-house team dedicated to finding and resolving bugs, this new program takes it a step further by paying outsiders to submit vulnerabilities. In a blog post yesterday, Facebook Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan took the opportunity to comment on...

Forged security certificate targets Google users

It has been confirmed that DigiNotar, a SSL certificate authority from the Netherlands issued an Internet security certificate to unknown attackers on July 10th. For over 2 months this certificate would have allowed them to setup fake copies of Google websites that appeared genuine to the majority of users, and collect login information for all of the company's services, including Gmail.
It's still unknown how attackers managed to get the fake google.com security certificate issued. First reports of the scam came from an Iranian web user, who posted the information in a Google help forum, sparking speculation that the Iranian government had been involved in the attack and subsequent release ...

Gigabyte Releases SATA Mode Switching Tool

Gigabyte Releases SATA Mode Switching Tool

Posted on Aug 31, 2011 by MG1

Gigabyte released a new utility that allows you to change the mode of the chipset SATA controller between IDE, AHCI, and RAID (if available), from within Windows. While the switching isn't exactly on-the-fly (because changing SATA mode is effectively changing the SATA controller as Windows sees it, and hence can't happen on-the-fly), it certainly saves the trouble of going into BIOS setup and digging out that option. The utility works by writing the value of the selected mode to the CMOS, and prompting a system reboot for the change to take effect. Gigabyte's Disk Mode Switch utility works on Gigabyte motherboards based on Intel 6-series chipset (H61, H67, P67, and Z68). Now why you'd need a...
