Acer chairman JT Wang says tablet fever is cooling

Acer chairman JT Wang says tablet fever is cooling

The sales of tablets are still growing rapidly on the computer market today. Tablets are taking a big chunk of buyers that would otherwise go to notebooks leaving companies with margins that don’t look good in the wake of sales decreases. Acer announced a quarterly loss for Q2 and the loss was blamed on the success of the iPad. Despite the Acer loss being laid at the feet of a tablet, Acer’s chairman JT Wang says that tablet fever is already cooling.
I think that is wishful thinking on Wang’s part at this point. The sales of Acer and other brands of tablets may be cooling, but the iPad has shown little signs of letting up. Wang also thinks that consumers will be wooed back to notebooks with ...

Styluses at the ready for the Sony Reader PRS-T1

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

It is not only Sony tablets that we're expecting to crash land at IFA. Well, now it isn't at least - as the follow-up to the Sony Reader PRS-650 has been leaked online, the equally congruous Sony Reader PRS-T1.
The T1 improves upon the original by adding Wi-Fi, a microSD slot, 2GB of on-board storage and multitouch support.
There is also a stylus option for note-taking on the 6-inch E-Ink Pearl display and you can do a bit of surfing too - Google and Wikipedia are on board, along with 12 built-in dictionaries.
Weighing in at just 168g, the T1 is a much more slimline option than the 650 as well.
Nothing official from Sony yet, the T1 was leaked by a Dutch e-retailer. But with IFA around the c...

Google files trademark for 'Spot,' programming language to follow?

It looks as though our old pal in Mountain View might have its sights set on developing another programming language. Avid coders probably recall the company's Go offering that was announced last year. Now, Google is looking to stake its claim on the trademark for "Spot." Sorting through the USPTO mumbo jumbo, it's clear that the project centers on a coding language and its related computer programs. Also of note: the internet powerhouse gobbled up four case-related domains including spotlang.com, spotlanguage.net, spot-lang.com and spot-lang.net. For those looking to See Spot Run, perhaps you'll be able to sprint over to the aforementioned URLs in due time.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has taken time out from telling people to get over their fear of real names on Google+ to smack down the UK education system, citing “a drift to the humanities” that has left the country floundering when it comes to digital development. “I was flabbergasted to learn that today computer science isn’t even taught as standard in UK schools,” Schmidt said during the MacTaggart lecture in Edinburgh The Guardian reports, pointing out that “your IT curriculum focuses on teaching how to use software, but gives no insight into how it’s made.” According to the Google exec, while the UK “invented computers in both concept and practice” it is currently “throwing away” that h...

Over half of all online adults in the US now use at least one form of social network, new research suggests, the first time all age segments have crossed the fifty-percent milestone. 65-percent of users have a Facebook or LinkedIn account, or one with another social networking site, the Pew Research Center claims, with young women (18-29) described as “power users” with 89-percent surveyed using the sites, and 69-percent doing so daily. However, the statistics come as one of the poster children for fast-growing social networking, Google+, seemingly experiences a slump in user interest.

Microsoft today revealed details on its revamped Windows 8 Explorer interface design. The file manager update focuses on delivering a more streamlined user experience through a ribbon UI that spans across the top of the Windows Explorer interface. It doesn’t look drastically different and retains much of the heritage Windows features while optimizing them for a better user experience.
Microsoft program manager Alex Simon posted the details on the Building Windows 8 blog. Simon noted that out of 200 commands in Explorer, they found that the top 10 commands made up 81.8 percent of usage. To make these most used commands most accessible, Simon says that the ribbon UI would be best to achieve an...

Snow Leopard to get iCloud support in 10.6.9 update?

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Apparently those of you who aren't upgrading to Cupertino's latest and greatest desktop OS will be able to sling bits through iCloud with the upcoming 10.6.9 update. The screenshot above comes via an eagle-eyed developer, who's already upgraded his MobileMe account to the service and also happened to open its forebearer's preference pane on a machine running Tiger. No word on when it'll drop (we'd place our bets alongside iOS 5's launch this fall), but looks like those of you running Snow Leopard got some readin' to do.

Nokia reveals that its Developer Network forum has been hacked

It has been a while now since we talked about a hack that resulted in private data being stolen Nokia has now announced that data on developers of apps for its mobile phones that use the Nokia developer network forum may have had private data on them stolen. Apparently, a hacker or hackers accessed a database that holds the email addresses of forum members.
The good news is that the worst thing likely to happen here is more spam; unlike the consequences of the theft of other data by hackers this year. The developer forums have been shut down temporarily while the investigation of the breach is underway. So far no person or organization has claimed responsibility.

HTC gives bootloader unlocking to T-Mobile Sensation, more

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

HTC has now added the T-Mobile Sensation 4G and a number of other handsets to its official bootlaoder unlocking program. Available online, the process lets some Android phone owners change the firmware of their handsets without special hacks. Currently supported are various models of the Sensation in different markets and the Evo 3D for Sprint.
There are some provisos, however, as the bootloader unlock isn't guaranteed to maintain the factory warranty. At the same time, the process doesn't remove carrier locks, and any official over-the-air update aren't guaranteed to work. There is also the possibility that Netflix and other apps that deliver secure content may not work as the copy protecti...

We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.” Facebook will instead focus on Pages, Sponsored Stories and its Ads product. Facebook announced Deals in November and began testing the service in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco. It partne...

Forbes: Microsoft benefits most from demise of WebOS

Forbes: Microsoft benefits most from demise of WebOS

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Forbes magazine have a piece up on HP’s recent canning of WebOS, and are spelling out what we in the community already suspect – that Microsoft and WP7 are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries of WebOS’s demise.
In light of Google’s recent Motorola deal and Apple’s unwillingness to license its iOS to third parties, we believe that Microsoft will be one of the primary beneficiaries of the death of webOS. We currently have a $28 Trefis price estimate for Microsoft, which implies a 10% upside to the current market price.

Microsoft is making the most of webOS’s demise. The company has been wooing the abandoned webOS developers with free phones and goodies in order to attract them to the Wind...
