Can the New Amazon Tablet Succeed?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazon
It's interesting that the Kindle (as opposed to the upcoming Amazon Kindle Tablet) was written off when the Apple iPad arrived, but curiously, sales rose. While the iPad is great for thumbing through magazines, the Kindle has it beat at book reading.
The Kindle has a MEMS display, which produces an image that sticks without power and supports a platform that parallels the readability of actual books. There's no glare. The page does not refresh continually. Also, the "digital ink" display uses very little juice to operate.
Amazon learned two things when the iPad came out. First, it found out that people would still buy the Kindle in an iPad world. Second, it discovered that it could sell a lo...

Sprint iPad on the way alongside iPhone 5?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsAppleiPadiPhone 4s
We know that the iPhone 5 should be coming to Sprint in October but the third-largest mobile operator may also be getting the Apple tablet to go along with it.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has prepared a 3G iPad which will be compatible with Sprint’s network. This is different than the Verizon 3G iPad but the report doesn’t mention whether there will be WiMax 4G support or not. I don’t picture Apple being the biggest fan of WiMax but I think that having 4G in an iPad could be a very cool thing.
The AT&T version has a 3G iPad but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the next version have AT&T’s 4G. The issue is that having 4G on each network will require different radios and Apple generally doesn’t ...

BlackBerry PlayBook said to be destined for 'same graveyard as the HP TouchPad'
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPRIM BlackBerryPlayBookTouchPad
As Research In Motion prepares to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday after the market closes, the future of the company and its next-generation products again takes center stage. While estimates for RIM’s second and third quarters are expected by some analysts to beat Wall Street’s consensus, performance of the vendor’s just-released BlackBerry 7 smartphones obviously doesn’t weigh as heavily on the minds of analysts as RIM’s future products and strategy. QNX and its ability to compete with the likes of Apple and Google will be analysts’ focus for the next several quarters, and unfortunately for RIM, the only QNX device it has launched to date is the BlackBerry PlayBook. Google updates Goggles for Android app with automatic image scanning
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google has updated its Goggles image recognition app for Android with the ability to automatically scan photos in the background for relevant search information.
The new, opt-in feature allows Goggles to run in the background, and it will monitor activity from the main Android camera. Whenever a picture is captured, Goggles will scan the photo for any information that it can recognize, and then alert the user when something of note has been detected. Users have to enable the "Search from Camera" option in the settings of Google Goggles for it to scan in the background.
The new version of Google Goggles is version 1.6, and it is compatible with Android 2.1 Eclair or higher. Users can download...

ASA decrees iPhone 4 is thinner than Samsung Galaxy S II
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAppleiPhone 4Galaxy S II
For a while, the Samsung Galaxy S II supposedly claimed the title of world’s thinnest smartphone – thinner than even the iPhone 4. We all just assumed this was true but Apple knew the real truth and it continued to advertise the iPhone 4 with this title in commercials. So, the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint on the matter and decided to step in to solve things once and for all.
Let’s get to the nitty-gritty: The iPhone 4 has a flat, uniform design, which means everywhere you look on the device is going to be exactly 9.3 mm. The Samsung Galaxy S II does not have a uniform design, particularly noticeable with the odd bulge on the bottom side. At its thinnest p...

Apple is planning to sneak in a modest refresh of its high-end MacBook Pro line later this month according to a new rumor. AppleInsider cites multiple anonymous sources in claiming that Apple’s MacBook Pro line will receive a light bump in late September that delivers marginal speed improvements to the laptops’ Intel Core i-series processors and little else. Intel’s just-announced 2.4GHz, 2.5GHz and 2.7GHz quad-core Core i7 processors are expected to replace the current 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz and 2.3GHz chipsets found in Apple’s current 15 and 17-inch MacBook Pro models, the report says. Apple may also update the current 2.7GHz CPU in the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Intel’s new dual-core 2.8GHz Core i7...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesPantechBreakout
Verizon's next 4G LTE enabled phone is expected to be the Pantech Breakout and unlike the just released Motorola DROID BIONIC, this handset gives up some of the bells and whistles in exchange for a more affordable price. If 4G is going to be what 3G is now, carriers will have to start offering 4G handsets that the crowd can afford
The official spec sheet
Droid Life was able to get its hand on the official spec sheet for the phone and we can tell you that the Pantech Breakout will have a 4 inch WVGA screen with a single-core 1GHz processor under the hood. HTC Rhyme first press shots leak: flaunts cleaner, prettier HTC Sense 3.5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCRhyme
The HTC Bliss has been circulating headlines all over in the last week or so, gearing for a possible September 20th launch, and now the first press images have leaked, hinting that the device is right on track to arrvial. The HTC Bliss appears as the HTC Rhyme in these press shots obtained by German tech blog HTCInside, and flaunts an all-new cleaner and intriguing HTC Sense 3.5 on top of Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. What you’re looking at on the press shot seems to be the home screen, which you can populate with quick access icons on the side.
Judging by this latest leak, the handset might after all launch under the HTC Rhyme moniker, or that could be its European nickname. In either case, we...

Ex-Samsung Electronics manager pleads guilty in insider trading probe with Apple iPad components
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleiPad
A former employee of Samsung Electronics said he indeed supplied screen components shipping information to a hedge fund manager about the upcoming Apple iPad last year.
Samsung is making some of the screens and other gear for the first iPad, so Suk-Joo Hwang was lured by promises for flying models on a private jet during weekend trips to Iceland in exchange for insider info about Apple's upcoming disruption device. We kid, but Wall Street somehow got under the guy's skin, and after 14 years of humble work for Samsung Electronics USA, he was trapped by the necessity to install a granite countertop in his old kitchen.
The guy has been granted immunity from the New York prosecutor, in order to ...

Steve Ballmer on Windows Phone: “We haven’t sold quite as many as I would have liked”
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
You’ve heard it before - Steve Ballmer has previously mentioned that Windows Phone sales have gone “from very small to very small,” but now nearly a year has passed since the launch of WP7 and Microsoft’s chief executive officer drew some obvious conclusions. “We haven’t sold quite as many as I would have liked,” Ballmer said. Well, analysts have actually pointed out that after Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s platform share on the market fell behind that of Samsung’s bada, which is plain bad.
But the outspoken CEO remained optimistic about the future. With DirectX graphics and better mobile version of Internet Explorer, Windows Phone will aim to take that magical third ecosystem position. “I’m...

HTC Bliss to be called the Rhyme, launching September 20?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCBliss
The HTC Bliss is a phone we've seen so much of that new press renders don't necessarily show us anything we haven't seen before -- there have been enough hands-on photos, walkthrough videos and leaked Sense 3.5 screenshots that there's really no questioning its future. The image you see above was leaked with a few new pieces of quality information: the Bliss will inevitably become the Rhyme once it hits stores -- which plays right into HTC's infatuation with Beats, though the tech probably won't be incorporated here -- and will likely be announced at the September 20th event (the date on the press image is often a solid indicator). HTCInside is also reporting that the Rhyme will be available...

Samsung appeals the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 10.1
The Regional Court in Duesseldorf has confirmed that Samsung filed an appeal against the injunction that prohibits its German branch from marketing and selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet that was enforced last week. The injunction, which puts a pause on sales until a verdict has been reached if Samsung is infringing on Apple patents with its tablet, was upheld last Friday, and Samsung's lawyers are obviously not wasting their time.
Samsung has ways to circumvent the ban, but they might come at a price, and it obviously prefers the legal route, at least until the current stock of tablets flies out of the shelves at major retailers. Henrik Timman, who is part of the Rospatt Osten Pross...
