Philly newsies to offer Archos Arnova 10 G2 tablet for $99 with subscription bundle
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsArchos10 G2
Taking a cue from other publications pushing tablet content, two major Philadelphia newspapers are offering discounted subscriptions bundled with a discounted device to read it on -- the Android-based Arnova 10 G2. The Philadelphia Media Network and Arnova will offer the tablet for $99 when purchased with a two-year digital subscription to The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News for $9.99 a month, or $129 for the year. That tally is substantially lower than the HK $1,680 (around $250) mark that the slate alone hit when it launched last month, but it's not apt to attract too much attention outside of Brotherly Love's favorite locale. So... which paper's lined up to play copycat? Check out th...

Google planning opt-out option for WiFi data gathering
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Privacy concerns have caused Google to back down a bit on its information collection amongst residential wireless networks. Beginning in the fall, the company will allow owners of the WiFi networks to opt-out of the data gathering. Google has assured concerned parties that it doesn't collect personal details when nabbing the information for its databases, but such comments haven't done much to calm the nerves of privacy advocates.

Intel Says 22nm Ivy Bridge Chips Are More Than Just a Die Shrink
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Intel's next-generation proccessors codenamed Ivy Bridge represent what the chip maker calls a "tick," or a process shrink, but there's also a lot of "tock" to be found in the upcoming chips, the company said at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco on Tuesday.
"Tick-tock" is the shorthand Intel uses to describe the cadence on its product roadmap that delivers chips with smaller transistors, or "ticks," and chips with major architectural changes, or "tocks," in alternating years. Ivy Bridge chips—the first Intel will produce using its next-generation 22-nanometer process—are a "tick," but they'll also include some significant "tock"-like design improvements, so the chip giant is calling...

Apple wants to press pause on patent suits, calls Motorola a lame duck
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
In what could turn out to be a very expensive lesson in minding one's mouth, Apple plans to use Google's and Motorola's own words against them in court. Over the weekend, Cupertino's lawyers filed two motions to stay in patent-related litigation with Moto, claiming the OEM's pending merger renders its patent suits indefensible. According to Apple's legal team, the proposed Motorola Mobility acquisition effectively transfers patent control over to Google, an allegation that public-facing statements from both companies seem to corroborate. Citing the potential waste of resources and probable reversal of future pre-merger settlements, the house that Jobs built is hoping to hold off on the court...

Samsung claims T-Mobile Galaxy S II uses 1.5GHz Snapdragon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungT-MobileGalaxy S II
Samsung in a response on Twitter gave an answer as to the mystery of the processor in the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. A social media spokesperson said it was the 1.5GHz Snapdragon APQ8060, the same processor as in the TouchPad 4G. Every other Galaxy S II version so far uses Samsung's own 1.2GHz Exynos chip.
It's still not clear why the T-Mobile version will have needed one of Qualcomm's chips, although it may have to do with network choices. T-Mobile's need for the 1,700MHz band on its HSPA+ 3G, which might go to a rare 42Mbps, could have pushed Samsung to change processors to get the frequency support it needed.
When it ships, which is expected in mid-to-late October, the T-Mobile edition may not...

Windows 8 Developer Preview Released
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
As reported earlier today, Microsoft has kicked off the Build developer conference. Besides revealing new details about Windows 8, Microsoft also gave away Samsung prototype Tablets running Windows 8 Developer Preview. “We reimagined Windows,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, in his keynote address to the thousands of developers in attendance. “From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise.”

Windows 8 requires less power than Windows 7
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7Windows 8
Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system will not require a processing powerhouse to run efficiently, the company claimed during the official unveiling.
At the Build developers' conference, Windows President Stephen Sinofsky demonstrated Windows 8 running on his own Lenovo S10 netbook, which is around three years old.
Sinofsky used Windows Task Manager to show that Windows 8 required less system resources than Windows 7 and that the aging Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM set-up was "enough" to run the new OS.
Windows 8 used 280MB of data while Windows 7 used 400MB to run, the implication being that users of older machines won't be forced to upgrade to a new PC if they want to upgrade t...

Windows 8 can run on an Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Curious what the minimum specifications for Windows 8 will be? As are we. Microsoft's remaining mum on specifics, but the outfit's Steven Sinofsky -- President of Windows and Windows Live -- just confessed during the opening Build 2011 keynote that an antediluvian Lenovo S10 was potent enough to run Windows 8. And in fact, it'll do so with more poise than with Windows 7. A brief demonstration explained that Win8 demanded fewer system resources (barely, but still) than Win7 on the same hardware, proving that an early-gen Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM is "enough" to run the outfit's upcoming operating system. We highly doubt it's enjoyable, but at least you (probably) won't be forced into an upgrade...

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 with T-Mobile bands on board gets approved by the FCC
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungT-MobileGALAXY Tab 10.1
Currently, if you want to get a Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 with connectivity features going beyond the scope of Wi-Fi, grabbing an LTE model from Verizon is your only option. However, there seems to be a chance of an alternative popping up on T-Mobile's shelves, if the device that we just came across ever sees the light of day.
A Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 model with support for T-Mobile's 4G bands has been approved by the FCC, meaning that the nation's fourth largest carrier might have yet another 4G slate joining its lineup in the near future. Listed with its SGH-T859 model name, the tablet has the exact same dimensions as the Wi-Fi-only version of the GALAXY Tab 10.1 and can run on T-Mobile's 1...

Vodafone opens an office in Silicon Valley
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
As Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer used to put it, [it's all about] “developers, developers, developers.” Vodafone realizes that, hence it decided to set up an office in Silicon Valley to allow an army of developers to test their apps and services on one of the world’s biggest mobile networks. Of course, its U.S. subsidiary Verizon Wireless (Vodafone owns a big chunk of Verizon’s mobile business) will also have a presence in the same space, making for an even better deal for those interested to have their stuff running on two networks.
According to the new center director Fay Arjomandi, “It’s a corporate objective to accelerate innovation of products.” As a result, once Vodafone has decided to wor...

Apple files motions for temporarily disabling Motorola to sue it because of the Google buyout
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorolaGoogle
Apple, banking on the ambiguity of who exactly should be suing it for patent infringement after Google's acquisition of Motorola, filed motions to halt the lawsuits that Motorola started against it.
The first case should be starting in April of next year, and by that time it's still not clear if the deal will have passed all regulatory scrutiny and paperwork.
"Apple should not have to face the threat of an injunction based on the claims of a party that now has no standing to bring those claims.", say Cupertino's lawyers, and "Apple will be expending enormous resources litigating claims against a party that does not have standing".
How does Motorola, which is still an independent company unti...

Motorola DROID BIONIC - was it worth the wait
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID BIONIC
You know what this expression means. In the field of mobile technology, we would use it to signify our admiration to a particular product or service that seems to be ahead of its time. In this relation, the Motorola DROID BIONIC, announced on January 5, seemed like a smartphone that was too good to be true, with its ubiquitous spec sheet, which almost magically combined all that was considered trendy and cool at the time.
Back at CES 2011, the DROID BIONIC made one helluva splash, with its promise to be the first handset to deliver both 4G LTE connectivity and a dual-core CPU, which would enhance the overall experience of using the phone, presumably surpassing anything we've seen up to this ...

Qualcomm’s baseband chip dominance threatened by new JV uniting Samsung, NTT DoCoMo and three others
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
Qualcomm’s has largely dominated the mobile baseband chip space with share reaching 80%, but now Japanese megacarrier NTT DoCoMo aims to threaten that monopoly by negotiating a new joint-venture over baseband chip manufacturing with Samsung. The new JV, if the negotiations turn out to be successful, will also include three other Japanese companies - Fujitsu, NEC and Panasonic’s mobile division. Baseband chips control the wireless communication and signal.
Talks are reportedly currently in their final stages and the new partnership may be formed as early as next year.
The partnership will design, develop and then outsource chip production, while the actual chips will be used on devices from t...
