Google Search Slips an Inch, Still Miles Ahead of Bing

Google Search Slips an Inch, Still Miles Ahead of Bing

Google is the big man on campus when it comes to search and it's said the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Unfortunately for Microsoft, Yahoo, and everyone else trying to carve a larger slice of the search pie, a little slip by Google here and there doesn't add up to anything close to a fall. Does it really matter that Google is the only search player out of the top three to give up a bit of market share?
In the short term, the answer is no, and at this pace, Google has plenty of time before it has to worry about long term results. Here's what happened in August. According to comScore, Google's share of the search market slipped to 64.8 percent, a 0.3 percent drop from July. Meanwhile,...

New ISP Bringing 1Gbps Broadband To London Residents

New ISP Bringing 1Gbps Broadband To London Residents

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

We’ve taken it as a sad fact that the US tends to lag behind the rest of the world in terms of broadband speeds. There’s no choice but to accept it, but it still sucks, especially when headlines keep popping up telling us how great they have it in London. A while back, we told you that Virgin Media was rolling out 1.5Gbps services, but only to small number of high-tech business. Now, a new ISP named Hyperoptic is promising to bring 1Gbps connections to the residential masses. There’s a catch, though.
Stand-alone households won’t be able to sign up for Hyperoptic’s “Hyper-sonic” 1Gbps connection – at least not yet. Only locations that contain multiple homes – such as apartments or condo compl...

Hackers Booby Trap uTorrent Downloads with Malware

Hackers Booby Trap uTorrent Downloads with Malware

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Ruh-roh Shaggy, peer-to-peer file sharing just became a little more dangerous. Hackers up to no good (and no, those two don't always go hand-in-hand) set their sights on BitTorrent.com and uTorrent.com, sneaking in the back and replacing legitimate downloads with tainted copies brimming with malware.
"This morning at approximately 4:20 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7), the uTorrent.com and BitTorrent.com Web servers were compromised. Our standard Windows software download was replaced with a type of fake antivirus 'scareware' program," BitTorrent stated in a blog post yesterday.
BitTorrent initially reported that hackers compromised downloads on BitTorrent.com as well, but later stated "A...

HP Offers Refund to European Touchpad, Pre3 Buyers

HP Offers Refund to European Touchpad, Pre3 Buyers

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

The HP Touchpad's troubled saga continues: the company's European arm is now offering partial refunds to anyone who brought the tablet at anything other than the bargain-basement fire sale price. The refund is for the difference between that clearance price and the price that the buyer originally paid, and the same courtesy is also being extended to buyers of the Pre3 smartphone, which never made it to the US.
Some retailers, like Best Buy in the US, have already been offering similar partial refunds to anyone who bought the Touchpad before HP pulled the plug, but others (including Amazon) have referred unhappy buyers to HP itself. This gesture should help to ameliorate any remaining ill wil...

Google grabs 1,023 patents from IBM

Google grabs 1,023 patents from IBM

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: GoogleIBM

Google has snapped up a new patent haul, buying over a thousand from IBM in what’s believed to be another attempt to shore up Android’s defenses against Apple and others. The 1,023 transferred patents were detailed by the US Patent and Trademark Office, with Google subsequently confirming the deal had taken place. It’s not the first such transaction we’ve seen; back in July, Google bought a different 1,030 patents from IBM.
Neither company is saying exactly how much Google paid for the IP, though it’s unlikely to have come cheap. Although CEO Larry Page has previously insisted that the Android patent situation is “not critical” - and that the company would rather concentrate on developing it...

That's according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer himself, who took to the stage at Build earlier today to dish that particular bit of news and recap the past two day's events. Hit the source link below for a video of the full keynote if you missed it (Ballmer's appearance is around the 2:32 mark).

Apple brings Samsung lawsuit to the UK

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungApple

Apple has quietly filed a lawsuit as of this past Monday in the UK's High Court. The move is a countersuit to a lawsuit Samsung filed against Apple in the country back in June. Exactly which patents are at question hasn't been specified in either case, however.
Apple has recently sued Samsung in the latter's home market of Korea and even more recently brought this legal war to Japan as well.
Apple was recently awarded a preliminary ban on Samsung selling Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in Germany during a trial, which was upheld after Samsung appealed it. The Korean company launched another formal appeal in a higher court.

Logitech Revue gets a second Honeycomb leak

Logitech Revue gets a second Honeycomb leak

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

In Google TV news another Honeycomb build for the Logitech Revue Google TV has been leaked. We saw Honeycomb for the Revue first leaked in August but that brought many bugs as well as the loss of Netflix. I’m happy to report this newest leaked build not only runs better but Netflix is back and ready to go. We have a full 8 minute video teaser for you after the break.
While it’s not perfect and still very much a work in progress. This does show that the project is moving along nicely because the video looks pretty impressive. Honeycomb on the Revue runs smooth, fluid, and stable other than a few minor hiccups and the fact we have Netflix back is a major plus too. Lets get right to it, here is...

Intel: Thunderbolt coming to PCs, prototype shown at IDF 2011 (update: video!)

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Guess what, Wintel loyalists? "Apple's" Thunderbolt I/O port is coming your way. If you'll recall, Thunderbolt was actually built with Intel's collaboration (Light Peak, anyone?), and sensibly, the chip giant is now making it possible for the port to appear on non-Mac machines. The news was just broken here at IDF, where a Haswell-based machine was briefly teased with a heretofore unpossible T-bolt port. Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, was on-stage to showcase six pre-production Ultrabook designs (all based on 3rd generation Intel Core processors), but stopped short of telling us exactly when the Thunderbolt I/O port would make its debut on commercially...
