NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Orange France in October

NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Orange France in October

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

Orange is betting heavily on the prospects of contactless payments, powered by NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. In the UK, they will be piloting the service using Samsung’s bada-powered Wave 578, while for its own backyard they’ll use the Samsung Galaxy S II. As far as I’ve understood, they won’t be offering some special version of the smartphone — rather they seem to talk about NFC-enabled SIM cards, something South Korea’s SK Telecom also wants to try out.

iPad 3, LTE iPhone promise 'monster' Apple earnings next year

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

Is Apple’s product pipeline too full of home runs to fail? The release of the iPhone 5, a second entry-level iPhone, the next iPad and even next year’s 4G LTE-powered iPhone will help Apple maintain its series of “monster” quarters according to Wedbush analyst Scott Sutherland. He expects Apple to ship 26 million iPhones during the first quarter of next year, up from 23 million during the first quarter of this year. New product launches are the special sauce to Apple’s success, Sutherland says. “While the iPhone 4 appears to be selling well due to existing market demand and new markets, we expect a bump up from the iPhone 5 this October, and a lower end iPhone geared towards emerging markets...

AT&T CEO: 'We'll do very well' with iPhone 5 even when Sprint gets it

HTC has now launched itself into the clouds, confirming that its latest Android phones will get an extra 3GB of storage with Dropbox. According to Pocket-Lint, the extra space will extend to all HTC devices running Sense 3.5, which at the moment means it's limited to the forthcoming HTC Rhyme. We probably won't see the Dropbox deal extend to HTC's Windows Phones though -- Microsoft reckons it has the whole file-syncing thing covered.

Verizon backs AT&T in T-Mobile merger

Verizon backs AT&T in T-Mobile merger

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has spoken out in favor of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, describing the deal as “kind of like gravity” and arguing that, if it blocks it, the US government will need to be more active in its spectrum plans. Speaking at an investor conference this week, McAdam claimed “that match had to occur” MarketWatch reports, and warned that the involved parties “need to be very thoughtful on what the impacts would be to the overall industry if this is a way to regulate the industry without actually passing regulation.”
“I have taken the position that the AT&T merger with T-Mobile was kind of like gravity. It had to occur, because you had a company with a T-Mobile that had the spect...

LG Optimus Hub (aka Univa / Optimus Two) earns its stripes at the FCC

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Okay, we'll totally admit that we've got something of a phone crush on LG's successor to the Optimus One lineup. Sure, it hasn't debuted in the States, and its specs already look a bit tired, but there's tons of goodwill attached to this family of devices. Should LG properly execute, the handset promises to be an iterative improvement for all smartphone buyers that need to save some coin. Now this sexy creation is making its way though the FCC, and while it's difficult to tell whether this is an international model or is bound for our domestic shores, it's easy to realize that we're one step closer to its much anticipated release. After a bit of digging, we can tell you the phone supports th...
