Amazon may unveil first tablet on September 28
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazon
Amazon has just sent out invitations for a press event taking place next Wednesday, September 28, in New York City. Since most such occasions are called for to unveil a major product launch, we can’t help but assume that this event is for the company’s first and long-rumored Android-based tablet dubbed the Amazon Kindle Tablet.
The much anticipated tablet has long been speculated to be an iPad-killer thanks to Amazon’s established ecosystem of services, price competitiveness, and strong distribution channel. However, the latest reports from analysts and industry folks who have been privileged with a limited preview of the slate say that it’s a 7-incher that’s more of a Barnes & Noble NOOK Co...

Verizon expects Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftRIM BlackBerryVerizon WirelessWindows Phone 7
Despite the poor sales of Microsoft’s Windows Phone devices, Verizon seems to have more confidence in the platform than RIM’s BlackBerry. During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam expressed his opinion on which platform would emerge as the third major mobile operating system and he believed that Windows Phone would overtake BlackBerry.
McAdam echoed the sentiment of other carriers, which feel that the mobile space will ultimately boil down to three major platforms. At the beginning of this year, the top mobile ecosystems were Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, Nokia’s Symbian, RIM’s BlackBerry, and HP’s WebOS. At present, Nokia has abandoned Symbian for Windows ...

US government to beat back botnets with a cybersecurity code of conduct
Like UnlikeOld Uncle Sam seems determined to crack down on botnets, but he still needs a little help figuring out how to do so. On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published a request for information, inviting companies from internet and IT companies to contribute their ideas to a voluntary "code of conduct" for ISPs to follow when facing a botnet infestation. The move comes as an apparent response to a June "Green Paper" on cybersecurity, in which the Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force called for a unified code of best practices to help ISPs navigate through particularly treacherous waters. At this point, the NIST...

RadioShack soon carrying Barnes and Noble Nook and Nook Color
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ebook ReadersBarnes & NobleNOOKcolor
Right on cue before another big release from Barnes & Noble in the form of a autumn release of the Nook Color 2 comes a brand new carrier for the massively popular electronic reader. This announcement contains both the original Nook which is priced currently at $139 and the Nook Color which is currently set at $249. Both devices will be available at RadioShack soon, while onlookers see this as a move toward a more broad coverage of mobile computing devices at the retail chain.
This past Sunday was also the final closing of the doors of Borders, one of Barnes & Noble’s biggest competitors. Whether or not this was due directly to the fact that they didn’t bring their A game to the eReader cour...

S3 sues Apple again without waiting for HTC takeover
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
S3 Graphics chose not to wait for the HTC acquisition to follow through to launch a second lawsuit and matching ITC dispute against Apple. The complaints, filed Thursday but publicized Friday, accuses Apple of violating patents both on a VGA graphics controller and on a rendering technique for 3D triangles. The lawsuit, submitted in a federal Delaware court, describes the scope as covering all iOS devices and Macs.
The lawsuit is unlikely to go ahead until the ITC dispute is resolved. Many companies, Apple included, often file with the ITC to get a more definitive statement on patent validity faster than through a trial. Most ITC cases finish within one and a half years where many trials can...

Google shoves Chrome 15, 16 into beta, dev channels
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google's rapid release schedule has continued this week as Chrome versions 15 and 16 hit the beta and dev channels a mere week after the first stable build of Chrome 14. Available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux, the Chrome 15 beta brings a redesigned New Tab page that should make it easier to manage your apps, bookmarks and most visited sites.
You can drag and drop apps to rearrange them, create new sections with custom names and delete apps by dragging them into a trash can on the bottom right of the page. You can easily navigate between the various sections (Most visted, Apps and Bookmarks by default) and Chrome will remember your selection the next time you open a new tab.

Aside from the Motorola Electrify, U.S. Cellular will be adding another Android smartphone to its offering in the next couple of days (or weeks). It’s the HTC Hero S, which as far as we see is the carrier’s version of the Kingdom (EVO Design 4G). If that’s true (and we think it is), expect a device with specs that include a single-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 4-inch qHD (540×960 pixels) display, 5-megapixel camera on the back, front-facing VGA camera (for video calls), GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi data, Bluetooth and so on.

Oracle amends complaint against Google to $2 billion, risks the wrath of Judge Alsup
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Oracle's damage claim against Google in it's battle over Java patents keeps inching downwards, but not nearly quick enough to please either Big G or Judge William Alsup. The Redwood Shores-based company initially sought $6.1 billion, but eventually lowered that to $2.6 billion. The judge responded by suggesting a far more modest $100 million starting point for a settlement and sent Oracle back to the drawing board. Well, the company amended its complaint, and is now asking for only $2 billion. Judge Alsup has grown noticeably more impatient with both sides as the suit has progressed towards trial, which is still scheduled for October. We can't wait to see what sort of outburst Oracle's lates...

Henry Tirri officially takes over as CTO of Nokia
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
The position of chief technology officer at Nokia has been a particularly weak spot for the company - former CTO Richard Green left in a scandalously quiet manner by just taking a leave of absence for personal resons to never return. Nokia didn’t comment on this for a while, but meanwhile Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat dug up that disagreements between Green and current CEO Stephen Elop were the reason for Green’s resignation. Of course, that was never officially confirmed, so we'd take it with a pinch of salt.
