Best Buy shopper gets to take home the Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9 before the masses
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 8.9
An anonymous Best Buy shopper told Android Central about how he ended up taking home an un-released Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9. As we reported, that tablet is now up for pre-order at Best Buy. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Anyway, the subject of the story had purchased the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 from the big box retailer, but was disappointed to see that his tablet suffered from a manufacturing defect. So he decided to return the tablet from whence it came.
So far, there is nothing strange or unusual to the story. When the Best Buy rep inside the store took the defective GALAXY Tab 10.1 to the back room to exchange it with a new unit, he accidentally came out with a Samsung GALA...

New simple, affordable solution floated by LightSquared to solve its GPS interference problem
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
As we reported a while ago, interference with nearby GPS signals has plagued LightSquared's attempt to offer a wholesale LTE network. And even though the company has a huge deal with Sprint to put up a nation-wide LTE network, we recently told you that the FCC wants more testing of LightSquared's signal to see if the recent improvement seen in the GPS interference is continuing. The FCC needs LightSquared to completely solve this problem since some of the GPS interference is taking place with military equipment.
LightSquared has come up with solutions before, but this time it claims to have a "simple, affordable solution" that won't require huge changes to its network The only change will co...

Best Buy Employee Flips Epic 4G Customer the Bird
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungEpic 4G Touch
A member of the Android Central forum uploaded a picture of a Best Buy employee waving his middle finger, which came pre-loaded on his newly purchased Samsung Epic 4G Touch (Galaxy S II) smartphone. After discovering the surprise extra, he sought out a store manager who dismissed the situation, saying it's not uncommon for Best Buy employees to open new merchandise and play with the hardware before boxing them back up and selling as new.
"Yeah I have to admit the camera quality is petty nice, lol. But yeah I spoke to their manager and he just made excuses, 'When we get in new devices the techs like to open them up and explore them a bit,' was his reasoning," Android Central forum member "rem...

Microsoft has lost $5.5 billion on Bing since launch
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has lost $5.5 billion, an average drain of $1 billion per quarter, on Bing since it introduced the search engine in 2009, CNNMoney reported on Wednesday. Despite the losses, Microsoft’s Bing reached a 30% share of the U.S. search engine market in April of this year, slowly narrowing the gap with Google, although comScore’s figures pin the search engine’s share at just 14.7%. Despite the constant drain, Microsoft still has a plan for Bing. During the company’s financial analyst meeting in California recently, Microsoft’s president of online services Qi Lu said his company hopes to use Bing to “reorganize the web” to “change the game fundamentally” instead of taking on Google in a he...

Twitter poets hint at Nexus Prime variant with QWERTY
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGoogleGALAXY Nexus
A few days ago The Panda King, who apparently has inside ties to Verizon, was exchanging lines of poetry with Tom Fleming and the riddles pointed to a November 3rd launch date for the Samsung Galaxy Prime (aka Nexus Prime). Well, Tom Fleming has come out of the woodwork again with some more poetry that points to a variant of the Nexus Prime that may contain a physical QWERTY keyboard.
The poetry also says that LTE is a "sure bet", that the device will have an HD screen and a dual-core CPU as we expected. It mentions "fancy new widgets" and then in the last line refers to "the one with a keyboard". This seems to point to a variant of the Prime having a QWERTY keyboard, and based on history it...

Microsoft And Nokia Release Windows Phone Porting Guides For Symbian Developers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
Microsoft and Nokia have teamed up on a package of new tools aimed at getting Nokia developers prepared for the transition to Windows Phone. Announced today are three jointly developed tools and guides, the most notable being the addition of Symbian Qt to the Windows Phone API mapping tool.
The Windows Phone mapping tool, which already supports iOS and Android, serves as a translation dictionary between the Windows Phone platform and other mobile operating systems. With it, developers can pick out the API calls in their apps, then look up the equivalent classes, methods and notification events in Windows Phone.
To be clear, this is not a direct porting tool – it doesn’t do the work for you. ...

Apple's Fall event set for October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil iPhone 5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
We’re getting closer and closer. According to AllThingsD, Apple is currently planning to hold the company’s Fall event on October 4th. The report also notes that Apple CEO Tim Cook will be introducing the iPhone 5 most likely without Steve Jobs, though it’s certainly possible Jobs could attend. As far as availability: “Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.” We’d suggest that Apple is just setting expectations a little too low and if we had to bet, we’d say that the iPhone 5 would be available within two weeks of the announcement, possibly even a week after.

Google Voice enters internal testing across Europe, international launch on the horizon?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Lather up your vocal cords, Europe, because it looks like Google Voice is on its way over. That's according to the company's European Director of Business Development, Jens Redmer, who told The Next Web yesterday that Google is taking "concrete action" to expand the service to the Old World. Redmer later confirmed that he's currently conducting internal tests with Voice, adding that its voicemail transcription feature has performed particularly well within Europe. He stopped short, however, of offering a precise launch date, saying only that the service's release would hinge upon legal and regulatory issues, rather than any technical obstacles. Now that the train has rolled into the testing ...
