Intel ditches smart TV division
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Chip giant Intel is to drop out of the smart TV market due to a lack of demand for internet-enabled flatscreens.
The company will fold its TV-based Digital Home Group, and move the engineers onto tablet, smartphone and Ultrabook development.
Intel's Atom CE4100 chip currently powers D-Link's Boxee Box and Logitech's Revue digital media players, as well as Sony's Google-powered televisions. But it's set to be the last chip of its kind, with competitor ARM likely to fill the void Intel leaves.
"This is a business decision where we're taking those resources and applying them to corporate priorities," Claudine Mangano, an Intel official, told Bloomberg.

Motorola LAPDOCK 100 turns select Moto smartphones into laptops
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID BIONICPHOTON 4GATRIX 2
This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the moment when smartphones are beginning to replace laptop computers. The newly unveiled Motorola LAPDOCK 100 connects to select Moto smartphones effectively turning them into laptops.
To be fair, we’ve already seen something similar in the past with Celio REDFLY products, which worked with Windows Mobile devices, providing users with big screen and big keyboard. This time, however, we’re talking about an Android-based solution and we’re hoping other handset manufacturers and/or third-party accessory makers will release more of such “docks” that sing along an array of smartphones.
The Motorola LAPDOCK 100 weighs 2.2lbs (less than 1Kg) and works...

Sony issues recall on 1.6 million LCD TVs
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsSony
Sony Corp. on Wednesday confirmed that it is recalling approximately 1.6 million Bravia-branded LCD televisions. Sony said it has received 11 reports to date, all from within Japan, from customers complaining that their TVs have overheated or begun to smoke. The problems are caused by a defective inverter transformer used with the LCD backlighting assemblies in the Bravia TVs, and the part is found in televisions sold both locally in Japan and overseas. Sony told the Associated Press it will issue local recall information in each market that sells the affected television models, which include the Bravia KDL-40X5000, KDL-40X5050, KDL-40W5000, KDL-40V5000 and KDL-40V3000.

Top RIM official apologizes for outage, promises all email will be delivered
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Robin Bienfait, RIM's Chief Information Officer, addressed the world on Wednesday evening. The topic, of course, was the recent outages in service suffered by BlackBerry users throughout the world, and which spread to the U.S. and the rest of North America on Wednesday. "You’ve depended on us for reliable, real-time communications, and right now we’re letting you down," the RIM executive said, "We are doing everything in our power to restore regular service everywhere and to restore your trust in us."
According to Bienfait, the outage started from the failure of a core switch and back-up systems failed to kick in. The timing of the outage is not good for the company, coming a little more tha...

Why is the new Verizon privacy policy scary?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Get ready for the so-called "privacy advocates" to go crazy, because Verizon has added language into its privacy policy which will allow the carrier to gather your mobile browsing history. We've already told you about the new language, and that you can opt out if you'd like. But, we also wanted to add some perspective on the story, because, this is nothing really new. Companies like Facebook, Google, and many ISPs do similar things already, and at least Verizon is being open about what it plans to do and how it plans to use your data, and it is giving you the option to opt-out if you want. There are consequences for both you and Verizon in this deal, and there is more to consider than one w...

LTE phones to be thinner than Verizon's, says AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon WirelessAT&T
It is no secret that the 4G LTE devices to hit Verizon Wireless so far haven’t exactly been the skinniest of the bunch and AT&T is taking a shot at that by saying their 4G LTE devices will be thinner.
These words come straight from the mouth of AT&T’s brave leader, Ralph de la Vega. So why is AT&T claiming that they can produce thinner 4G LTE devices then their main competitor? The answer is simple. The LTE phones that will run on AT&T’s network will use a technology called circuit-switch fallback.
When a 4G phone ventures out of a coverage area, the device will fall back to a traditional circuit switch-based 3G network. Verizon devices differ in the sense that they need two radios; one fo...

T-Mobile slices the upgrade price of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 starting today
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryT-MobileBold 9900
According to some photographs of T-Mobile pricing documents, the mobile operator is cutting the 2-year upgrade price of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 from $299.99 to $249.99 starting today. The nation's fourth largest carrier had given the handset the highest price out of the three major U.S. carriers offering the model. Following the price cut, T-Mobile's price will match the $249.99 subsidized price Verizon is asking for the CDMA variant of the phone, the BlackBerry Bold 9930. That still is $50 more than the $199.99 that Sprint is charging for the BlackBerry Bold 9930.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 offers a combination of a physical QWERTY keyboard-considered by many to be the best physical QWERTY e...

Online fundraising company, Razoo, has just released new numbers which show the average amount and total donations by users according to what platform, browser, or mobile device each uses. The results are interesting, but maybe not all that surprising.

Mac OS users tend to donate about $9 more per user than Windows users, although Windows users make up close to 80% of all donations. Safari users tend to donate more than any other browser. Verizon's test cars upgraded to benchmark real-life 4G performance against the competition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon's fleet of 100 test cars, which log a million miles annually will be equipped to measure the true 4G speeds of its competitors and of Verizon itself from now on, in order to benchmark performance and improve its LTE network.
So far the test cars have been logging voice quality and 3G data statistics, and we are familiar with the testing fleet from the "Can you hear me now" commercials. Verizon has equipped the vehicles with Ascom gear, which will allow it to measure things like download/upload speeds, signal strength and latency of all 4G networks in the US along the road, regardless of the technology used. The results will be used to improve against the competition and to gauge any ...
