Bose's OE2 and OE2i on-ear headphones pack brand recognition, little else

Bose may be best known for its active noise-cancelling headphones, but that doesn't mean it's a stranger to the plain ol' passive types. Take for instance its latest duo of supra-aurals, the $150 OE2 and the $180 OE2i (which merely adds an iDevice compatible inline remote / mic for those extra Hamiltons). Put simply, these cans are an evolutionary update to the company's TriPort OEs, promising a more comfortable fit from memory foam padding, and improved sound quality. As you'd expect, there's absolutely no mention of specs, but frequent travelers will be joyed to know that the headphones can fold up for storage inside an included carrying case. The OE2s are currently available for purchase ...

FCC: AT&T failed to address how proposed T-Mobile merger will add jobs

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: T-MobileAT&T

Rick Kaplan, chief of the Federal Communication Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, sent a letter to AT&T on Thursday asking the carrier to clarify just how the proposed merger with T-Mobile USA will add jobs in the United States. “Our review of the information currently in our record suggests that AT&T’s responses on this issue remain incomplete,” Kaplan said. The FCC is giving AT&T until October 31st to address fully “all plans, analyses and reports discussing the creation or loss of jobs” if the merger is approved. AT&T must also disclose how many T-Mobile USA jobs will be eliminated and show how the merger will affect employment inside and outside of the United States during...

HTC Hero S Designed For Sprint

HTC Hero S Designed For Sprint

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

The US version of HTC's Hero S - just released for US Cellular - contains hardware supporting Sprint's unique network, including WiMAX, and CDMA in the ESMR (old iDEN) band, according to the FCC approval documents for the phone. Much like the Motorola Electrify for US Cellular is essentially the Photon with WiMAX disabled, HTC has done the same for the Hero S. The FCC has approved a version of the Hero S for Sprint with WiMAX, and a distinct variant for US Cellular that FCC documents describe as having WiMAX "operation disabled by software change only." The original Hero was Sprint's first Android phone. The new "S" model contains major upgrades, including a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon S2 processor, ...

Let’s face it, we all know how much of a hassle it is to try and organize all of our loose change to deposit them for some cool and crisp bills at the bank, but some of us simply hate plopping down all of that unorganized money at the teller counter. Well, that’s where Coinstar comes to mind as it offers a simple and hassle free experience. Thankfully for the rest of us, someone has concocted a similar idea when it comes to getting money for used and old cell phones that are literally lying around collecting dust.
During a stroll through CTIA E&A 2011 in San Diego, we came upon this ATM sized contraption that gobbles up your old cell phone, and then dispenses money according to its value and...

Apple iPhone 4S gets the teardown treatment

Apple iPhone 4S gets the teardown treatment

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

It was only a matter of time until the guys over at iFixit got their hands on an Apple iPhone 4S to complete a teardown and some of their findings are what we expected while others may be disappointing.
The Apple iPhone 4S does indeed have the dual-core A5 processor that was first used in the iPad 2. They have the processor speed listed at 1GHz while prior reports said the processor was clocked at only 800MHz. When that word broke it was a little disappointing for some despite early tests showing that the iPhone 4S does indeed stack up with the competition in terms of speed.
Another rumor that many dreaded is in fact true as the iPhone 4S only has 512MB of RAM in a time when anything less ...

Google Voice may be getting slow rollout of MMS support

Google Voice may be getting slow rollout of MMS support

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

It's no secret that we love Google Voice. It's got a great feature set, and especially for those of us who play with multiple phones, it is great to have one number to rule them all. That said, Google Voice hasn't really been one of the more supported Google products as far as feature updates, but some users are reporting that may be about to change.
Reports are coming out that some Sprint users are seeing a form of MMS support coming to Google Voice. It seems that if you have SMS forwarding to e-mail set up in Google Voice, you may be able to receive MMS messages. There have been confirmed reports of both images and video attachments coming through in e-mail after being forwarded from Goog...

Google Q3 report shows record earnings, but doesn't talk Android

Google held its earnings call for Q3 2011 today and the numbers are looking good for the company. On the purely financial side of things, Google is reporting record earnings. Year-on-year revenue was up 33% for Q3 clocking in at a whopping $9.72 billion, which beat the estimates by almost $1 billion.

Apple is looking to take on the likes of LoveFilm and Netflix by bringing movie streaming to iCloud.

This is according to The Wall Street Journal, which has it on good authority that negotiations are currently on-going with a number of movie studios.

If the deals go through, then it could mean that users will be able to stream movies from the iCloud to their iOS device, without needing to store the content on their device.

UK: Samsung Galaxy Ace Purple now available from O2

UK: Samsung Galaxy Ace Purple now available from O2

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

If you’re looking for a “different” budget Android smartphone, maybe O2 UK has something for you. The Telefónica-owned operator is now offering the Samsung Galaxy Ace Purple, which as you can imagine is a version of the Galaxy Ace in purple. Not sure why the name change was needed, but hey – God knows what the marketing folks of today’s mobile operators are thinking. As far as I’m concerned it could be just an SEO trick to get people googling “galaxy” and “purple” to O2′s website.
Anyway, aside from the color change, there’s not a single difference under the hood. In other words, expect the same 800MHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth and so on.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus to cost 499 EUR in Europe

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus to cost 499 EUR in Europe

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, it forgot to mention how much it will cost. Thanks to Netbook.it we now know how much the Korean company will ask for the brand new tablet in Italy – 499 EUR. That’s not that bad for a device as capable as the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, which as you probably know builds on the success of Sammy’s original Galaxy Tab product. However, under the hood it’s a completely different beast with specs that include a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, HSPA+ and Wi-Fi connectivity, 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash on the back, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, the same 7-inch 1024×600 pixels capacitive touchscreen, while Android Honeycomb 3.2 is running t...

Qualcomm makes an awesome video of the HTC Sensation 4G powered by creepy crawlers

Qualcomm makes an awesome video of the HTC Sensation 4G powered by creepy crawlers

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

To demonstrate the power-sipping nature of the third generation Snapdragon chipsets S3, as the one found in the HTC Sensation 4G, Qualcomm has hired some bugs to do their moves, while at the same time generating electricity to charge the handset.
Among spiders, praying mantises, scorpions and other assorted buggery, the dual-core 1.2GHz chipset gets running by the frantic movements in the so-called "Bug Circus Generator" and there is even energy left so the final result is a full battery charge to boot.
The footage is, of course, scripted with hours of preparation behind it, but it has great entertainment value for people who don't know much about mobile chipsets. For the S4 quad-core silico...

Sprint denies claim that Apple iPhone 4S will be sold with unlocked micro-SIM slot

Sprint denies claim that Apple iPhone 4S will be sold with unlocked micro-SIM slot

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG1

Sprint has denied earlier reports that its AppleiPhone 4S would be sold with an unlocked micro-SIM card slot. An unlocked micro-SIM slot would allow travelers to use any local SIM card when traveling abroad, sparing them from paying exorbitant roaming fees.
Unfortunately, it seems like the iPhone 4S will be sold by Sprint with a locked SIM card slot, much like any other version of the phone sold by carriers across the world. Speaking to Ars Technica, Sprint representative Michelle Leff Mermelstein confirmed that the iPhone 4S would have a locked SIM card slot. Sprint will be offering international roaming plans to customers who travel with the iPhone 4S to countries that don't have CDMA netw...

Asus ROG Tytan Desktop for Gamers Gets Official

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

You may not realize it, but in addition to motherboards, notebooks, netbooks, all-in-one PCs, and everything else, Asus also builds and sells desktop towers, some of which are well equipped. Sometime soon, Asus will add its first Republic of Gamers (ROG) build to its desktop line in the form of the ROG CG8565 Tytan, a monster-looking machine Asus says was "inspired by ballistic missile submarines."
Asus hasn't announced its Tytan yet, but there is a product page that details all the specs and feature. This is an Intel machine built around the Z68 chipset. Processor options include second generation Core i5/i7 chips. Other specs include:
