BlackBerry Outage Continues, May Be Spreading
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
RIM can’t seem to get back on its feet. Amidst falling sales, and shareholder discontent, the smartphone make is now dealing with a three-day long service outage that seems to be spreading, rather than abating. The outage started in the Middle East as well as parts of Europe and Asia, but now reports indicate that it may also be affecting some US and Canadian users.
Unlike other smartphone platforms, RIM manages the flow of data and service for all its devices through its own back end. This allows lowers speed connections to still result in acceptable levels of performance, but when the servers go offline, RIM is stuck with a lot of unhappy customers.
RIM has said that the outage was caused ...

Apple reportedly trying to add movie streaming to its iCloud
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple's iCloud may have only just launched but according to rumors reported by the LA Times and Wall Street Journal, it's already negotiating with Hollywood to add movies to the service (funny how things have changed in five years.) The timing is particularly curious because Apple, along with Disney, is one of the notable holdouts from the movie studio-backed Ultraviolet scheme with similar buy once / stream anywhere aspirations that just hit the streets this week. However, according to "people familiar with the matter" it could allow Ultraviolet access on iThings via app, while also bringing its usual media lock-in magic by also throwing in streaming copies of any flicks purchased on iTunes...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
New rumors circulating are pointing to a new October 18 launch for both Google’s latest operating system Android 4 and the next flagship Nexus phone from Samsung, which will showcase Ice Cream Sandwich. The launch date was postponed from its planned October 11 launch following the death of Steve Jobs. Droid-Life sources have said that the revised launch is now expected to coincide with the AsiaD: All Things Digital event in Hong Kong beginning next week.
The rescheduled Unpacked event is now only going to take place in outside of the US, where the original event was scheduled to coincide with CTIA currently underway in San Diego. For US users interested in following the event, it is said to ...

Some iPhone 4S handsets delivered early
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
It's not like the wait for the iPhone 4S since it was announced has been all that long, but we still envy the at least three fortuitous German phone fans whose pre-ordered iPhone 4S handsets were delivered last night.
The proof? The host of photos that the buyers have posted online, of the handset lounging in its box, screengrabs of voice-controlled assistant app Siri and more.
The iPhone 4S goes on general release on Friday 14 October, but pre-orders have broken records, taking in over 1 million orders in the first 24 hours.
Lucky escape
Lucky for Apple, only a handful of the much-anticipated handset have snuck out early; imagine the mess we'd be left with if a million Apple fans had sponta...

RSA claims a nation state had to be behind server hack
Like UnlikeBack in March, the security firm RSA announced that its servers had been hacked. The irony of a security firm being hacked wasn’t lost on many. The issue the hack raised was that RSA issues the security tokens that are used to protect networks all around the country including some networks that have classified information on them relating to the military. The data stolen eventually helped facilitate and attack on military contractor Lockheed Martin.
At the time the hack was made public RSA admitted that data had been extracted from their servers and that extracted data might be used to reduce the effectiveness of the SecurID tokens RSA produces. RSA has now announced that it believes that wi...

How You Can Get a Fresh iPad for $100
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad
I love my iPad. It's the original model, bought on April 3, 2010. It's been working perfectly since then but the battery life was really bad, lasting only a couple of hours lately. It was exhausted. I had to replace it.
In the process, I got a fresh iPad 64GB at the Apple Store for just $100. The good news, you can get one too.
After so many charging cycles, my original iPad's battery was exhausted. It took forever to recharge and only a few hours to completely run out. I remember the days when I first got it. I could use it normally for a couple of days, watching at least two Netflix movies on it or browsing the web, running some apps and reading comic books.
I went to the Apple Store to as...

Nintendo 3DS Expansion Slide Pad hits pre-order in Japan
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
If you are looking forward to getting your hands on the Nintendo 3DS Expansion Slide Pad, the price and ship date have surfaced. This is the expansion that is specifically made for playing Monster Hunter Tri-G. The accessory is a bizarre looking attachment that makes the 3DS fatter and a bit longer with an extra D-pad.
The Slide Pad will launch on December 10 in Japan and will carry a retail price of ¥1,500, which works out to about $19.50 here in the states. That is a lot cheaper than I expected the accessory to cost. The cradle also apparently adds some buttons to the back of the 3Ds too.
The idea is that the Slide Pad will give the same playing experience that monster Hunter 3D fans will ...

Get Hacked, Don’t Tell: Drone Base Didn’t Report Virus
Like UnlikeOfficials at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada knew for two weeks about a virus infecting the drone "cockpits" there. But they kept the information about the infection to themselves - leaving the unit that's supposed to serve as the Air Force's cybersecurity specialists in the dark. The network defenders at the 24th Air Force learned of the virus by reading about it in Danger Room.
The virus, which records the keystrokes of remote pilots as their drones fly over places like Afghanistan, is now receiving attention at the highest levels; the four-star general who oversees the Air Force's networks was briefed on the infection this morning. But for weeks, it stayed (you will pardon the expression)...

BlackBerry network troubles now hit US
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
RIM has revealed that BlackBerry owners in the Americas have also been hit by intermittent service woes. There have been network delays that ape the issues the company has faced in the UK and Europe these last few days. In short, as our US chums might say, "the problem goes global".
Earlier today, RIM's UK managing director, Stephen Bates apologised for the troubles the company's customers have experienced, and claimed that RIM is "working hard around the clock to resolve the issue". He added that it is "not going to stop until they get to the end of the problem".
In addition, the company released the following service update for BlackBerry owners in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and ...

Like UnlikeThe FBI on Wednesday arrested a Florida man who is accused of hacking into the email accounts of various celebrities, including Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera, and Scarlett Johansson.

According to the indictment, Chaney used various online aliases and trolled the Web for personal information about the celebs he hacked. He then used that data to access their email accounts, and often found new victims by perusing a celebrity's address book.

Samsung Galaxy W to be Exhibit II 4G on T-Mobile
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungT-MobileGALAXY W
The Samsung Galaxy W has surfaced and looks to be heading to T-Mobile as the Exhibit II 4G. The handset was first revealed back in August, when Samsung unveiled its new naming scheme for its smartphone product lines. The “S” series, as in the Galaxy S, represented its flagship line followed by R, W, M, and Y series in descending order, which marks the Samsung Galaxy W, or Exhibit II 4G, to be a mid-range device.
The Exhibit II 4G, whose name was revealed today by TmoNews, has also been codenamed Ancora in some markets and is expected to feature a 3.7-inch WVGA screen, a 1.4GHz single-core processor, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. Those are pretty d...

C programming language inventor Dennis Ritchie dies at 70
Like UnlikeJust one week after the tech industry was hit with the news of Steve Jobs' death, computer scientist Dennis Ritchie has also passed. The unfortunate news was announced by friend and colleague Rob Pike, who notes that Ritchie died at his home after a "long illness." The 70-year-old Harvard graduate and veteran of Lucent Technologies and Bell Labs was credited with authoring the C programming language.
Ritchie and Brian Kernighan published the book The C Programming Language in 1978, following development at Bell Labs. The book was followed by a second edition, which was translated into a wide range of languages and is still read today.
The computer scientists won a number of awards for creati...
