Samsung Galaxy Y available now from Vodafone UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy Y
The latest product off Samsung's near-constant conveyor belt, the Galaxy Y, has been spotted loitering around Vodafone UK stores. The "youth"(translation: entry-level) smartphone arrives with a slightly better spec sheet than the Korean giant's cheapest Android phone, the Galaxy Mini, although you shouldn't expect a load of GS II-eque features. The petite handset includes a two megapixel camera, a three-inch touchscreen, an 832MHz CPU, and the typical wireless medley of Bluetooth, 801.11 b/g/n WiFi and GPS -- all packed into a 3.5 ounce shell running Google's Gingerbread OS. Sure, there's no 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, but for just £10.50 per month, we may be willing to overlook it.

Why the iPhone 4S Only Has 512MB of RAM
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
We'll probably never hear an official justification for why Apple only put 512MB of RAM in the iPhone 4S. But you know what? They don't need one. Because you'll hardly be able to tell. Here's why.
Live Long and Prosper
The more RAM you pack in a device, the more power it uses (at least until the next generation of RAM comes along, then it resets and starts all over again). For decades, power consumption was a secondary concern for gadget hardware and software engineers. They had an unlimited supply of energy piped through a cord. But now that battery-powered devices have become our most vital trinkets, how long that device can live without a recharge doesn't just affect performance—in a lot ...

Hackers make Panasonic GH2 micro four-thirds camera record 176Mbit video
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasPanasonicLumix DMC-GH2
If you are a hard-core camera geek, you may be the sort that is into hacking firmware to give your camera the features you wish the maker had given it from the factory. There have been some interesting hacks put forward for the Panasonic GH2 in the past and the latest that has surfaced makes the camera video quality much, much better.
Out of the box, the GH2 can record video in 24Mbit AVCHD format full HD resolution video. For some of us that is plenty of quality, but others want more. This new hack has cranked the GH2 up a bunch of notches and lets the camera record 176Mbit AVCHD Intra video. That Intra tagged onto the back is a huge change.

Verizon wants to know where you go, what you look at, that's all
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon's got a couple of loose ends to tie up. It's nothing important, you understand, just a tweak to its privacy policy that will allow the carrier to monitor your physical movements and browsing activities. It actually did much the same thing back in 2007 to monitor phone calls. The aim, of course, is to tailor ads to your interests, while also gathering information about your habits that it can sell on to others in the form of "business and marketing reports." Oh, one more thing: VZW promises not to share any information about you "personally" and it also gives you the option to opt out. (Opt out.)

Motorola stockholders to discuss Google acquisition on November 17
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
Motorola has announced a special meeting for its stockholders to discuss the proposed purchase of the company by Google that was announced back in August. The meeting will be held on November 17, and the stockholders will vote on whether to adopt the proposal at that time. Google announced its intent to buy Motorola Mobility earlier this year for the sum of $12.5 billion. Motorola faced a lawsuit shortly after that by a stockholder who claimed that the purchase price was not the best that Motorola could have gotten from Google.

Sony Ericsson kills off feature phones as part of Q3 2011 report
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony Ericsson
ony Ericsson posted its Q3 2011 financial results today, and while the numbers were better than those of the previous quarter, the company is still down from where it was last year. Sony Ericsson's CEO Bert Nordberg stated that the company's focus for 2012 will be entirely on smartphones, and that it will not longer offer feature phone models.
According to the figures, Sony Ericsson's Q3 sales were 33 percent higher than Q2 2011, with 9.5 million units shipped and 1.586 billion EUR (US$2.18 billion) in sales. Last year the company shipped 10.4 million units and had 1.603 billion EUR (US$2.2 billion) in sales for the same quarter. Despite the lower number of phones shipped and the slightly lo...

FCC petitions AT&T for more clarification on T-Mobile purchase
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
The Federal Communications Commission has sent a letter to AT&T asking the carrier how its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile will add jobs to the American workforce. The FCC has asked AT&T similar questions already, but it deems that AT&T's answers have been incomplete thus far.
The FCC is looking for the last five years of reports covering workforce and job creation from AT&T. It wants "all analyses, reports, data, or other information in AT&T's possession, custody or control that analyze the size and location of AT&T's workforce both before and as anticipated after the merger. This would include, among all other responsive documents, any documents enumerating the number of T-Mobile and AT&T...

Some Retailers Say iPhone 4 Cases Will Fit The 4S, Others Don’t
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
We’re all well aware that a phone such as the iPhone 4S requires a case. It’s just too damn precious and costs way too much to go unprotected, but the best cases are often expensive. That said, I’m sure many iPhone 4 owners were hoping to keep their old case when upgrading to the iPhone 4S, but if OtterBox is your go-to case brand, think again.
OtterBox iPhone 4 cases won’t protect the iPhone 4S, with the exception of the Reflex Series. But the iPhone 4S cases from OtterBox will protect the iPhone 4.
According to Brighthand, there are tiny differences in the design of the 4 and 4S, including a slightly different placement of the volume buttons. Apparently OtterBox’s tight-fitting cases won’t...

Huawei blocked from first responder network contract, US cites 'national security concerns'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Huawei
The inability to win US government approval isn't exactly an unfamiliar issue for Huawei, which by now must be conditioned not to expect a nod from major US telecom companies. But now, The Daily Beast reports that the U.S. Commerce Department has made it very clear that the Chinese company won't have a role in building the country's new dedicated first responder wireless network. A spokesman wasn't shy about the reason, either, explaining that Huawei "will not be taking part in the building of America's interoperable wireless emergency network for first responders due to U.S. government national security concerns." And what about those national security concerns? Well, Huawei president Ren Z...

Amazon may sell over 5 million Kindle Fire tablets in Q4
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazonKindle Fire
Amazon could ship 5 million or more Kindle Fire tablets in the fourth quarter of 2011, one analyst believes. Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar on Thursday stated that Amazon likely has a huge hit on its hands, with fourth-quarter shipments that may surpass even the most bullish estimates. ”Checks indicate that they could ship upwards of 5 million units in the December quarter, which is just shy of half of Apple’s volume,” Kumar told CNET in an interview. An earlier rumor from DigiTimes suggested that Amazon has placed orders in the neighborhood of 4 million units, and preliminary shipment estimates from Forrester suggested that Amazon might ship 5 million tablets this quarter. Barclays se...

Windows Phone 7 Facebook app finally crosses 1 million monthly active users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
It has been a hard slog, and now, on the eve of the one year anniversary of the launch of Windows Phone 7, the Windows Phone 7 built-in Facebook app has finally crossed the 1 million active user mark.
Based on earlier estimates this translates into about 6 million Windows Phone 7 users in total, a number I am sure far below what Microsoft expected to sell over the last 12 months, but still a reasonable constituent.
By comparison the Facebook for iPhone app has around 90 million users, while the Facebook for Android app has has 67 million.
Hopefully with a new generation of devices and more committed partners in the next 12 months Windows Phone will also cross these milestones at a significan...

How to spot the fake Netflix app
Like UnlikeNot too long ago, the Netflix for Android app was only available on certain devices. It ultimately got an upgrade and is now compatible with any Android 2.2 & 2.3 device, but in the days where those of you were searching for Netflix on your non-compatible device, a Trojan started making the rounds. If you installed Netflix from the Android Market, you should be fine, but if you were impatient and grabbed a copy from an outside source, you may be running a fake version which was designed to steal your account information.
The fake Netflix app is easy to spot once you know what to look for. On the login screen for the official Netflix app, the username/password fields are centered and there a...

HTC Mozart selling out in Russia
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC7 Mozart
It seems Russians know a thing or two about selling Windows Phones.
According to a report we received the HTC Mozart is turning out to be so popular there that retailers are having to order as second batch.
The success is apparently due to a massive ad campaign by HTC, the MTS mobile operator and Microsoft Russia, MTS sales personnel that are eager to sell Windows Phones, with almost every MTS store features a Windows Phone ad and special Mozart display tags, and a nationwide TV advertising, also sponsored by MTS, stressing a very low price of 12,990 Rubbles, aluminium design and the "main sensation of the year" moto.
According to our tipster one can now hardly find a HTC Mozart in Moscow an...
