Kodak licenses projector patents to IMAX to stay afloat
Like UnlikeFiled in: KODAK
Eastman Kodak has not handled the transition to digital photography as gracefully as its competitors, but when your company’s over a century old, staying nimble isn’t as easy as it used to be. Of course, a company with that much history has an overabundance of intellectual property, and that fact might help Kodak stay relevant in a market that has been outpacing it for several years. Kodak has announced a deal with IMAX to license its laser projection patents to the movie company, allowing it to more effectively project digital films on its gigantic screens.

Canon unveils 18MP, full-frame EOS-1D X with super metering
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasCanonEOS-1D X
Canon brought out a long-anticipated new full-frame EOS pro camera in the EOS-1D X. The 18-megapixel camera unifies the EOS-1D camera line and is a major leap in performance over the 1D Mark IV with two DIGIC 5 main processors with about 17 times more raw power than the DIGIC 4s they replace. A DIGIC 4 still sits inside as a third processor but here is used for very advanced metering: it drives an Intelligent Subject Analysis system that, with a 100,000-pixel metering sensor, can check brightness, target colors, and human faces to get more precise exposure without burdening the main processors.
The two main processors contribute to a maximum continuous speed of 12 frames per second in RAW, e...

Amazon pursues authors, cuts out the publisher middleman
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
If you needed any more evidence that Amazon is building its own digital media empire, here it is. The New York Times reports that the online retail giant will publish over 120 books this quarter alone, both on its Kindle e-book platform and traditional physical copies. That puts it in the odd position of competing with some of its biggest suppliers, the traditional publishing houses that have been around for decades.
These aren’t self-publishing hobbyists or first-time authors, either – Timothy Ferriss, best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek is among them. A memoir by Penny Marshall is rumored to have cost $800,000 in rights alone, a sum that Amazon paid happily. Reports from the industr...

Alleged LulzSec hacker pleads not guilty in Sony case
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
An alleged LulzSec hacker has pleaded not guilty to charges that he took part in a Sony network intrusion. Reuters reports that Cody Kretsinger, 23, has entered not guilty pleas to one count each of conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer at a hearing in the US District Court in Los Angeles. Judge Victor Kenton set a December 13 trial date for Kretsinger, who also ordered that Kretsinger be defended by a court-appointed public defender.
Specifically, the nine-page indictment accuses Kretsinger of launching an SQL Injection attack on the Sony Pictures computer systems. Using the pseudonym Recursion, Krestinger is alleged to have posted the stolen information which inclu...

Canon manufactures 50 million EOS DSLRs, 70 million lenses
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasCanon
Canon has produced its 50 millionth EOS series SLR camera, and its 70 millionth EF lens.
It's been less than 24 hours since Nikon announced it had produced 65 million Nikkor lenses, but ever keen to show one upmanship, Canon has today revealed that it is on course to produce its 70 millionth lens by the end of October.
Along with that, the 50 millionth EOS series SLR camera has also been produced. The first EOS camera was produced just 24 years ago in 1987, with the first EOS 650.
Two years later, Canon launched its first professional EOS SLR, the EOS 1, while total EOS production reached 10 million units by 1997. By 2003, that number had doubled to 20 million, largely due to the compact EOS...

With barely a few weeks before the phone giant's annual hurrah, Nokia World, kicks off in London, details have leaked of a new phone possibly winging its way to the Finnish faithful. According to MyNokiaBlog, the 710 is slightly longer and wider than the MeeGo-powered N9, with a 1.4GHz Cortex A8 processor, a 3.7-inch TFT screen and a five megapixel camera topped with some 720p video-capture frosting. RIM: Smaller 3.2" BlackBerry Curve Touch 9380 Imminent
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryCurve 9380
A smaller, touchscreen-only and therefore hopefully cheaper BlackBerry Curve Touch is on the way, with RIM telling its app developers to prepare for a modest 3.2" touch-only BlackBerry. It most definitely won't look like the Torch then (pictured).
According to BlackBerry's own developer site, the Curve Touch 9380 will run its touchscreen at a middle-of-the-road smartphone resolution of 480x360, producing a screen pixel density count of 189ppi.
The RIM tech site also makes mention of the 9790, your more traditional 2.44" portrait/QWERTY BB model type, which is a phone previous internet leaks knew as the Bold Bellagio 9790.

Rumor: Galaxy Nexus Coming to Verizon November 10th for an Ouchie $300
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGoogleGALAXY Nexus
You ready with your grains of salt? Good, because a supposedly leaked document from Verizon has pegged the much-anticipated Galaxy Nexus to launch on November 10th. That's the good news. The bad news is that it'll run you 300 bones.
The Galaxy Nexus has been the most eagerly await phone next to the iPhone 4S. Rumored to have a ginormo 4.6 inch screen with 1280 x 720 pixels, a 1.2GHz dual-core (hopefully Exynos) processor, and of course, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, this is something we really want to get our hands on. The $300 price tag stings, but if it's as good as we hope it will be, I'm sure it'll do just fine. We've already seen some video leak (though it's likely that that's an earl...

FCC and CTIA get set to hit back against bill shock
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Bill shock? It's "a real consumer problem that needs to be fixed," according to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski. The department teamed up with the CTIA and the Consumers Union today to address the problem of unexpected mobile bill charges. The solution? Alerts about overages and international roaming sent to subscribers before they rack up bills they can't afford. It's a plan the organization talked up last year, thanks to the findings of a Consumer Task Force. The FCC hopes that a rollout of the plan will be completed in the next 12 months.

T-Mobile gives Wildfire S, free SMS to keep iPhone defectors
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCT-MobileWildfire S
T-Mobile has been giving staff a flurry of options to try and keep customers from jumping ship for the iPhone 4S. New staff memos have shown the carrier giving out 500,000 text messages to existing T-Mobile subscribers who have unlocked iPhones. This would be to address those between October 18 and 20 who have a "high likelihood to churn" because they want a new iPhone, TmoNews saw.
Another offer is pitched more at those who would leave for the iPhone 3GS. T-Mobile would specifically try to pitch the "value of the open Android market place" by reminding them they can now get the HTC Wildfire S for free on a hardware upgrade and with a rebate. The choice is unusual given its status as an entr...
