Dolby 7.1 for streaming launches
Like UnlikeAudio specialist Dolby has announced the first discrete 7.1-channel surround sound entertainment experience available to streaming media.
The first film to get the treatment (in the US of course) is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – which offers up the Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 audio.
The more cynical might suggest that the more distractions provided from the actual movie the better, so sounding good is a distinct improvement.
Thriller
"We're thrilled to announce that the first entertainment content for an over-the-top or broadcast environment has been released in 7.1-channel surround sound, the best possible audio experience available for this type of delivery," said John Couling, ...

Siri security flaw uncovered
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
The default setting for Apple's new Siri personal assistant app for iPhone 4S allows much of the handset's functionality to be used even when the phone is locked.
The security worry means that anyone can pick up your iPhone and dictate texts, emails, make calls and have Siri list calendar appointments, while the 4S is passcode locked.
Siri - the little harlot - will also tell anyone details and addresses from your contacts book, but it can't open apps without unlocking the phone.

New Mac Trojan virus disables OS X anti-malware
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X 10.4
According to internet and computer security research firm F-Secure, there’s a new Mac Trojan virus making the rounds. The virus has been labeled as OSX/Flashback.C and attacks by disabling the updater component of XProtect, which is OS X’s built-in anti-malware protection.
The virus first decrypts the paths of the XProtectUpdater plist files and unloads the XProtectUpdater daemon. It then overwrites the XProtectUpdater files with a blank character and also overwrites the plist and binary for the XProtectUpdater.

Asus Padfone release date comfirmed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesASUSPadFone
Fusion-fans will be overjoyed to hear the Asus Padfone release date has finally been unveiled.
Jonney Shih, Asus Chairman, took to the stage at AsiaD to confirm that the tablet and phone combination will be launched in Q1 2012.
He also stated that Ice Cream Sandwich would indeed also be on board the tablet-phone combination, which is something of a blessing given that many phones will be running or about the run Android 4.0 when the phone is launched.
In fairness to Shih, this isn't really anything new - Asus promised to deliver the Padfone in 'early 2012' when the phone was launched in June this year and it seems that promise is holding.

Yahoo results better than expected
Like UnlikeDespite the doom-sayers, Yahoo's latest financial results have lifted the mood in the company by not being quite as bad as the analysts predicted.
The word turmoil doesn't really cover a company that has ousted its chief exec and is actively looking for a buyer.
However, earnings per share were up 32 per cent year-on-year, although revenue was down 5 per cent to $1.072 billion and income down 6 per cent to $177 million.
Boost
That gave Yahoo's shares a boost on the markets, and presumably a nice boost to morale in the company as well.
Yahoo parted company with Carole Bartz recently – the chief executive brought in after Jerry Yang was pushed out following the rejection of a massive takeover ...

Japanese Number Crunchers Calculate Pi to 10 Trillion Digits
Like UnlikeA pair of Pi lovers named Alexander J. Yee and Shigeru Kondo have calculated the mathematical constant out to 10 trillion digits. It took over a year -- 371 days -- on Kondo's desktop, not a supercomputer, to accomplish the feat, and it wasn't easy getting there. Kondo battled multiple hard drive failures, and each time an HDD would go belly up, he would have to roll back the computation to a previous checkpoint. Kondo says this added up to 180 days of lost time.
His desktop is comprised of two Intel Xeon X5680 processors running at 3.33GHz, 96GB of DDR3-1066 memory, Asus Z8PE-D12 motherboard, three LSI MegaRaid SAS 9260-8i RAID controllers, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 installe...

The HTC Radar 4G shows up on T-Mobile USA’s website as coming soon

The HTC Radar 4G has shown up on T-Mobile USA’s website as coming soon. The handset is currently expected to hit stores on the 2nd November, and T-Mobile is touting its HSDPA+ abilities, which the carrier and AT&T are both labelling as 4G speeds.
While the handset is welcome, many T-Mobile USA subscribers are still complaining that they will not be getting the HTC Titan, a somewhat more premium handset, that may have to wait for the T-Mobile/AT&T merger to be available to all.

Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola DROID RAZR landing in early 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleDROID RAZRAndroid 4.0
Motorola’s senior vice president of portfolio and product management Alain Mutricy confirmed on Wednesday that the DROID RAZR, announced Tuesday for Verizon Wireless, will receive an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update early next year. Mutricy explained that the phone was designed to run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), which will be installed when it hits the market, but that Motorola has already created a time frame for an Android 4.0 roll-out, Pocket-lint said. Without support for NFC, however, features such as Android Beam will not be operational. The DROID RAZR is equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a large Super AMOLED Advanced display with a qHD resolution, an 8-megapixel camera a...

Galaxy Nexus signup page includes seven US carriers, endless speculation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
Samsung and Google still haven't officially revealed which US carriers will be getting the Galaxy Nexus next month -- even though Verizon has been leaked, is shown in the official trailer (included after the break, look at 0:22), and there was a quickly-retracted Facebook confirmation earlier today. Now, the official signup page for release info on Samsung's site allows users to show their carrier preference between AT&T, Cellular South, Metro PCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. It's hardly a confirmation this latest Android phone will ever be available on all of them, but even if you're not on Big Red, we won't kill your Ice Cream Sandwich dreams yet.

If You Sold Your Apple Stock Today, You’re An Idiot
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Before I begin, two points:
1) I do not own any Apple stock. I have absolutely no interest in whether the stock goes up or down.
2) One can make an argument that there may be other reasons to sell Apple’s stock now (namely, uncertainty following the passing of Steve Jobs), I’m simply arguing that the stock’s collapse today due to yesterday’s earnings is laughable.
Watching the stock market following Apple’s Q4 earnings yesterday and into today, I’m reminded of a famous Steve Jobs quote. “If you see a stylus, they blew it.” Reworked, the quote today would be: “If you’re investing based on Apple analysts, you blew it.”
Apple’s stock dropped 23.62 points today — over 5.5 percent. It went from a...

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus reportedly built to avoid Apple patent lawsuits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAppleGALAXY Nexus
Samsung specifically designed the Galaxy Nexus to avoid patent lawsuits from Apple, Samsung’s mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun told Yonhap News Agency Wednesday. “We will see if it will be 100 percent free” from patent infringement lawsuits, he explained, noting that the current ongoing patent war with Apple is in its fledgling stages. “I think it is just a start and [the battle] will last for a considerable time,” Shin explained. “I don’t think there is much gain. What we are losing is the pride in our brand. We will avoid everything we can and take patents very seriously.” Samsung originally said it had postponed its San Diego press conference, during which it was supposed to launch the Galaxy ...
