Iris voice control app is dev’s 8hr attempt at Siri for Android

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Apple’s Siri system is one of the flagship features of the iPhone 4S, but a team of Android developers reckoned they could match the voice command system – or at least rival it – with just eight hours work. Dexetra came up with Iris for Android, a tongue-in-cheek reversal of the Siri name, and pulling together Android’s existing voice input and text-to-speech capabilities with some online search and a dash of arch humor.

OCZ Technology's pushing SSDs on step further this morning, with the introduction of the Octane SATA 6Gbps and Octane-S2 SATA 3Gbps SSDs. These guys promise "record-breaking access times" and up to 1TB of capacity, with Indilinx Everest internals playing things out on the inside. Oddly enough, the company claims that this is the world's first SSD to hit 1TB, but in fact, we saw the first one from pureSilicon way back in early 2009. At any rate, the company claims that these guys can deliver up to 560MB/sec of bandwidth and 45,000 IOPS, and they rely on a proprietary page mapping algorithms allow for steady mixed-workload performance. The Octane series also includes a number of features uniqu...

Nintendo 3DS: new features are Ninty’s last stand against mobile phones

Nintendo 3DS: new features are Ninty’s last stand against mobile phones

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

The Nintendo 3DS was supposed to be one of the gadgets of 2011. But seven months after its UK launch, the handheld hub is struggling to stay relevant, as iPhone and Android games turn the portable gaming market on its head. The Japanese giant’s latest attempt at making the 3DS relevant is a new software updated, reportedly set for release on 4 November, which will bring 3D video recording, an improved eShop and a new StreetPass game. But there’s just no escaping the fact that if this update fails, Nintendo will have to concede that handheld gaming is no longer the guaranteed cash cow it once was.
Slashing the cost of the Nintendo 3DS has undoubtedly stimulated sales. There was a 260 per cent...

The software giant reported record revenue of $17.37 billion, representing a 7 percent increase from the same quarter the year before. The strong figures were due largely to Microsoft’s business products and especially Microsoft Office, which earned $5.62 billion, an 8 percent year-over-year increase.
The company’s Server & Tools division reported $4.25 billion in revenue, up 10 percent from the same period last year, while the Windows and Windows Live Division reported $4.87 billion in revenue, up 2 percent year-over-year. Gmail redesign leaked by, er, Google

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Gmail is about to roll out with a massive redesign but we weren't meant to see it yet. However, thanks to an over eager Google-ite, it seems that a private video detailing the new look and features went public on YouTube for a while, before being taken down (officially, at least).
It seems that the main new design is based on the Preview theme that's already available in Gmail, but with a stack of new options, to boot.
The look is now "as clean, simple and as intuitive as possible". The active screen will adapt to fit the size of your window, and you can set specific display densities. In addition, the side bar can be manipulated to your own specifications - hiding labels and bringing chat h...

U.S. Advises Secure Control Systems Against Anonymous

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

The latest report provides an assessment of Anonymous' capability to penetrate Industry Control Systems (ICS) and gain access to infrastructural networks, which follows up on a previous report that investigated the group's ability to develop new cyber attack tools.
According to the current evaluation, the government believes that Anonymous has shown that it can access ICS, but may not have the ability to actually understand the structure and inner workings of such software yet. There is speculation that Anonymous may be interested in gaining that knowledge, especially through freely available sources: "Free educational opportunities (conferences, classes), presentations at hacker conferences...

AT&T Passes 100 Million Wireless Subscriber Mark as Revenue Falls Flat

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T added 2.1 million wireless subscribers during the company's third fiscal quarter for 2011, enough to get over the hump of 100 million subscribers, the wireless carrier announced today. The company also said that sales of Android and other non-iPhone smartphones were nearly half of 4.8 million smartphone sales for the quarter, which has to be news to Google's ears.
The iPhone is still selling well too, and in fact AT&T said in a separate press release that it sold 1 million iPhone 4S devices as of Tuesday. Nevertheless, revenue fell flat for the quarter, down $103 million, or 0.3 percent, versus one year prior. Profits took a bigger hit and fell from $12.3 billion a year ago to $3.6 bill...

Second GPS IIF Satellite Finally Set Healthy

Second GPS IIF Satellite Finally Set Healthy

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: GPS

The second GPS Block IIF satellite, SVN63/PRN01, was finally set healthy on October 14, and a corresponding Notice Advisory to Navstar Users (NANU) has been issued. The delay in bringing the satellite into service was due, in part, to extended testing of the cesium atomic frequency standard (AFS) on the satellite. IIF satellites carry three AFSs: one cesium and two rubidiums. The performance of the cesium AFS, independently confirmed, was poor. A switch to one of the rubidium AFSs took place on October 5. The satellite was launched in July, and operational control was handed over to the Air Force 2nd Space Operations Squadron (2 SOPS) at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, on August 19.
