Android said to have overtaken Apple in global mobile app downloads

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Applications downloaded to Android devices in the second quarter surpassed the number apps downloaded from Apple’s iOS App Store. New data from market research and intelligence firm ABI Research shows that Android overtook iOS by a substantial margin in the June quarter, having been responsible for 44% of mobile app downloads around the world compared to iOS at 31%. ”Android’s open source strategy is the main factor for its success,” said ABI researcher Lim Shiyang in a statement. “Being a free platform has expanded the Android device install base, which in turn has driven growth in the number of third party multi-platform and mobile operator app stores. These conditions alone explain why An...

Thought Cisco Was Out of Home Networking? Think Again

Filed in: Cisco

Cisco seems to be in a very different place now than it was about six months ago. The networking and telecommunications giant recently hired a new general manager of its Home Networking Business Unit. That's the same division of Cisco that many predicted would be shuttered after CEO John Chambers announced the company would re-focus on its "core competencies," including enterprise networking, collaboration and video.
The announcement was made in wake of economic losses, perception Cisco had "disappointed" investors, and inevitably resulted in job losses, the killing of the Flip consumer video portion of its business, as well as endless speculation, much of it negative.
That was almost six mo...

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Retro computer enthusiast Amigakit has announced that its AmigaOne X1000 desktop will be with us for Christmas - with a whopping price tag of £2,000.
A labour of love for its creators, Trevor Dickinson, Anthony Moorley and Ben Hermans, it packs a custom-built motherboard running a semi-dual core processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a Radeon HD4650 graphics card.
Those specs aren't all that alluring, especially given the whopping price tag, but it's still worth bearing in mind that the AmigaOne has been built from the ground up to run AmigaOS4. Which itself is an optional extra.
First-come only-served
The desktop will be built and sold on a first-come first-served basis, but we'...

Google has accepted a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over various privacy issues, agreeing to be audited for its privacy practices for the next 20 years in a landmark case the agency says is the first time it has had to require any company to formally implement a comprehensive privacy program to protect users' personal information, TalkingPointsMemo reports. The case was prompted over issues related to the now-defunct Google Buzz service.
The FTC initially charged Google with engaging in unfair and deceptive practices in 2010 by claiming users could easily opt-out of Buzz when in fact the tools that limited sharing of information were difficult to find, confusing and ultim...

Netflix US subscriber count drops by 800k in Q3, 21.45 million still streaming

Netflix US subscriber count drops by 800k in Q3, 21.45 million still streaming

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

After a tumultuous third quarter the numbers are finally in for Netflix, and as expected its price hike and Qwikster madness have cost it a few customers in the US. Currently the company is reporting a total of 23.79 million customers in the US, down from 24.59 million last quarter -- fewer than even it projected a few weeks ago. According to the report, it lost more "long term" customers than expected, which it attributes, again, to its poor explanation of the reasoning behind the change. To address those decisions and its inability to reach a new deal with Starz it has a few more numbers to show, as apparently only 7 percent of new customers are opting for the $15.98 hybrid package, while ...

Today, version 3.1 is making its debut, once again primarily offering small tweaks like better support for Intel's Ivy Bridge and Cedar Trail chips and improved power management. But there are some new features getting baked in, including support for NFC and drivers for Wiimotes. The brave amongst you can download the sources from Git now (it hasn't been posted to Kernel.org just yet), but we suggest you hold out until your distro of choice releases an official update.

Lenovo C325 all-in-one packs AMD Fusion, touch for $699

Lenovo C325 all-in-one packs AMD Fusion, touch for $699

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Lenovo hoped to bring a rare level of features to lower cost all-in-one desktops through the C325. The 20-inch PC manages to fit an optional touchscreen and native apps but keeps the price down by using AMD's 1.65GHz E-450 processor. The chip gives it graphics fast enough for modern 3D and 1080p video, including over HDMI.
The easel-shaped design still finds room for some extras, such as the options of a TV tuner or USB 3.0. An uncommon always-ready speaker system lets users plug in an outside audio source like an iPod and play it without having to turn the computer on.
Lenovo hasn't outlined what users get in the standard version other than the E-450 and a DVD burner, but prices will start ...
