Dell XPS 14z UK launch detailed

Dell XPS 14z UK launch detailed

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

It may not quite be an Ultrabook, but the Dell XPS 14z is definitely a svelte bit of kit and it's UK bound next month.
This 14-inch laptop will come with Intel’s 2nd generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor, a 1366x768 resolution display and optional features including the choice of a 500GB, 640GB or 750GB hard drive along with an internal tray-load DVD combo for playing and recording DVDs/CDs.
Its big selling point is its skinnyness though: measuring 23mm and looking rather cool with an aluminium and magnesium alloy finish with a palmrest in dark grey.
There's Nvidia graphics on board with a GeForce GT 520M with 1GB card and there's 4GB dual channel DDR3 up to 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz memory o...

Siri co-founder leaves Apple

Dag Kittlaus, Siri co-founder and CEO from 2007, was an important person in establishing the service all the way until it was acquired by Apple in April 2010. Recently, he has left Apple - shortly after the launch of the iPhone 4S. It's not yet confirmed by Cupertino itself, but it's said that Kittlaus and Apple parted ways on an amicable note and the main reason behind Kittluas's decision was his determination to spend more quality time with his family in Chicago.
That doesn't affect the rest of the Siri team, though, which is expected to continue working with Apple. Kittlaus on his part was listed as director of iPhone apps at Apple. After leaving the company, Kittlaus will now focus on ne...

TSMC, tipped to be biting into Samsung’s supply contract with Apple, has announced that it has begun volume production of 28nm chips and has products already shipping to customers, though the company did not confirm Apple was one of them. Instead, AMD, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Altera all get name-checked, with AMD and NVIDIA saying they will be using the 28nm process silicon in their next-gen graphics products.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s next Snapdragon S4 chips will also be built using 28nm processes, on silicon produced by TSMC’s factories. In face, the company says it has more than 80 customer tape-outs at present, over twice as many as for TSMC’s 40nm production. As for the chips themselves, TSMC...

Google music store may go live this week, share over Google+

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

A handful of more details about Google's music store may have emerged on Monday. The service is now thought by unofficial WSJ sources to be going live within the next two weeks, and possibly this week. "At least two" major labels are unlikely to have signed on, however, with only EMI probably onboard and Universal in discussions that might not make the release date.
Independent labels are still the ones most likely to sign on. The rumors had Sony and Warner both anxious about preconceptions about piracy on the combination of a music locker and a store. Sony reportedly believes that the locker would greenlight piracy by not making distinctions between paid and unpaid tracks, even though some ...

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich includes support for gaming controllers

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich includes support for gaming controllers

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Devs digging around in the Android 4.0 SDK have found something that fans of Android gaming will really appreciate. The devs have discovered that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS will have integrated, native support for game controllers. That means you will be able to connect game controllers to the tablet to play your favorite games rather than relying on touch or motion control. That would be a really cool thing for controlling some of the old school arcade game ports that are out there.
I wonder what sort of game controllers will be supported. I would assume that Bluetooth and USB controllers would get the nod. That might allow you to just plug your Xbox or PS3 controllers in and pla...

Wikileaks halts whistle-blowing as money dries up

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Wikileaks has stopped publishing confidential government files in order to focus on fund-raising after the US banks put a "financial blockade" on the organisation.
The focus on dosh over documents is intended to be a temporary measure, with the organisation describing the action as a "fight for its survival".
Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, told reporters, "If Wikileaks does not find a way to remove this blockade, we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the new year. If we don't knock down the blockade, we simply will not be able to continue."

What big, wireless brother wants, big, wireless brother gets. With its pay-as-you-go subsidiary already packing this particular piece of mobile kit, 'twas only a matter of time before Sprint got its hands on the Transform Ultra. Officially announced for the third place carrier today, Sammy's Droid Charge with a QWERTY twist packs the usual array of mid-range specs. The 3.5-incher runs Android 2.3 atop a single-core 1GHz processor, with a VGA front facing / 3 megapixel rear camera, 512MB RAM, 2GB of storage and 1500mAh battery in tow. Motorola RAZR says hi to FCC with AT&T radios on board; Motorola XOOM 2 also visits?

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

The Motorola RAZR has made it past the FCC and inside it carried radios tuned to AT&T's frequencies. But before you AT&T customers start getting excited, the frequencies are also used by many Canadian carriers and it is expected that the Motorola RAZR will be heading across the border after it is launched by Verizon. The shared bands are GSM 850/1900 and WCDMA Bands II/V for 3G.
No one is ruling out an AT&T variant of the Motorola DROID RAZR as it would make sense for the Schaumberg based company to spread its flagship phone to as many carriers as possible. This is the MO that Samsung has used quite well with its Galaxy line of smartphones. Of course, AT&T has not uttered a word yet and nei...

O2 to get Galaxy Nexus in November

O2 to get Galaxy Nexus in November

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Google had mentioned that it would be launching the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus with partners around the world, and now O2 has unveiled itself as one of those partners with a new teaser page for the hot new device.
The page gives the general spec sheet information about the Galaxy Nexus that we've gone over plenty of times, and does mention it will include an HSPA+ radio for "up to 21 Mbps download speed". The big news however is that O2 looks like it will be a launch partner for the Galaxy Nexus as the site says the phone will be available to O2 customers in November.
Still no exact date given for release, but November is only a week away, so we're hoping we'll be getting some more specific ...

Acer A100 and A500 may get ICS in January 2012

Acer A100 and A500 may get ICS in January 2012

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

The new hotness these days is in manufacturers confirming that their Honeycomb tablets will be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment, and get it fast. Word has it that the Motorola XOOM will get the Android 4.0 update, and it looks like the Acer ICONIA TAB A100 and A500 will be getting the update in very early 2012.
Apparently, word leaked from Acer Poland that the ICONIA TAB A100/101 and A500/501 would not be getting the update this year, but users should expect the ICS treatment in mid-January 2012. This seems to match up with a lot of the other update announcements that we've heard from other companies, so although there has been no official announcement, there is also no reason to be...

Motorola XOOM to get ICS, but no definite timeline for update

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

It's one of the more annoying aspects of the Android ecosystem, but one we must live with. Even if a device is less than a year old, we don't feel comfortable that it will get the newest update unless the manufacturer explicitly says so. Recently, HTC has confirmed that it will bring ICS to "as many" devices as possible, but that isn't much solace. On the other hand, Motorola has confirmed the update will come to the Bionic and RAZR at the very least. Now, it's looking more likely the XOOM will get the update, but we can't say when.
A source from the Motorola support message boards, which Engadget claims is a very reliable source, has confirmed that the Motorola XOOM will be getting the ICS...

Netflix beats Street but loses 800,000 subscribers in Q3; DVD decline to continue

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Shares of Netflix stock plummeted more than 27% in after-hours trading as the company revealed it lost more than 800,000 customers in the third quarter. Netflix now serves 23.8 million total customers and it reported third-quarter revenue of $822 million, beating estimates of $812 million. Earnings worked out to $1.16 per share, which also beat Wall Street’s consensus of $0.96. “While we dramatically improved our $7.99 unlimited streaming service by embracing new platforms, simplifying user-interface, and more than doubling domestic spending on streaming content over 2010, we greatly upset many domestic Netflix members with our significant DVD-related pricing changes, and to a lesser degree,...

Verizon exceeds target, covers 186 million with 4G LTE network

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Today Verizon Wireless announced that its fourth generation LTE network now covers 186 million Americans, thanks to the 22 markets that were added last week. This beats the company's self-imposed target of 185 million people covered with Verizon 4G by the end of 2011. Considering that 13 additional cities are set to go live on November 17, Verizon seems positioned to not only meet that target, but blast right on by it. The addition of those 13 markets should bring Verizon's 4G LTE network to a total of 178 million people, and the company is hinting that even more markets could be added in December.
