Motorola RAZR open for unlocked bootloader business, if the carrier says so

Motorola RAZR open for unlocked bootloader business, if the carrier says so

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Promises, promises. Motorola wasn't exactly fibbing when it said all future phones would ship with unlockable bootloaders, as it appears they will. There's just one teensy obstacle impeding the joy of ROM flashers worldwide: it's up to the carriers' discretion to keep it that way. In a chat with AusDroid, Moto's VP of Enterprise Mobile Devices, Christy Wyatt, revealed that the RAZR would indeed be the OEM's first device to ship with a software unlock. Unfortunately, as in the case of the DROID variant, operators like Verizon have chosen to put the smack down on any custom hackery, citing the typical concerns over security. But it's not all grey wireless skies, the handset's global version wi...

Apple to ship 42.5 million iPhones in Q4

Apple to ship 42.5 million iPhones in Q4

Spurred by the iPhone 4S launch, several analysts expect sales of Apple’s iPhone lineup to explode during the fourth quarter of this year. “The timing of the 70 [international] launches could have some impact on sales ahead of the launch, the US/International split, and hence, our estimates look conservative,” UBS analyst Maynard Um said in a recent note to investors. “A similar 27.5 percent U.S. / 72.5 percent international split from this quarter would imply 42.5 million units in CY4Q or an upside of 14.5 million iPhones.” Apple shipped 17.1 million iPhones during the fiscal fourth quarter, and the lower-than-expected sales were blamed on rumors and anticipation ahead of the iPhone 4S laun...

Sony Ericsson Forces Xperiablog.net Fan Site to Shut Down

Sony Ericsson Forces Xperiablog.net Fan Site to Shut Down

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Seriously, Sony Ericsson, it’s a miracle you have any fan sites these days and you just want to shut them down? Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that you don’t make halfway decent phones – the Xperia Arc is OK, but how’s that stacking up against the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, DROID RAZR or the HTC Sensation series? Instead of shutting down fan communities like Xperiablog.net, and ultimately turning them into your enemies, you should embrace them. They’re the small handful of die-hard fans you have left, really.

Hacker group Anonymous now targeting child porn sites

Posted on Oct 25, 2011 by MG1

Anonymous, the “hacktivist” group that waged war on the U.S. government and large companies such as Apple, has shifted its focus from cracking corporations to fighting online pedophilia. The group is now targeting web host Freedom Hosting and is accusing it of knowingly hosting child pornography. “The owners and operators at Freedom Hosting are openly supporting child pornography and enabling pedophiles to view innocent children, fueling their issues and putting children at risk of abduction, molestation, rape, and death,” Anonymous said in a statement. “Our demands are simple. Remove all child pornography content from your servers. Refuse to provide hosting services to any website dealing w...

Apple MacBook Pro (late 2011) line-up gets processor and graphics boost

Apple MacBook Pro (late 2011) line-up gets processor and graphics boost

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG15

If you meander on down to the Apple store this morning, you'll spot some nice little spec bumps to the MacBook Pro range -- without any increase to the prices. For a start, you can now splash out on a faster AMD Radeon HD 6770M discrete GPU with your 15-inch or 17-inch lappie. Even better, there are some CPU improvements to be had: the 13-incher gets the option of a 2.8GHz Core i7 or a 2.4GHz Core i5 dual-core processor, instead of the previous entry-level 2.3GHz i5 (and it also gets its HDD notched up to a minimum 500GB, or max 750GB). The 15-incher now goes up to a quad-core 2.4GHz i7 -- the same speedy processor that comes in the updated 17-inch variant.

Google TV 2.0 Unveiled

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Filed in: Google

Google TV was not the most popular feature to be introduced to HDTVs. The main problem was with the content providers who constantly blocked Google TV from accessing their content. It looks like Google is making a new attempt to launch their platform as screen shots of the Google TV 2.0 have been unveiled. The platform will come with an updated UI and will have access to the Android Marketplace. But unfortunately that’s all the specs available at this time. Will the new version be more popular? Only time will tell.

Google Drops Chromebook Subscription-Only Policy

Google Drops Chromebook Subscription-Only Policy

When Google launched its Chromebook initiative for business and education customers, potential clients weren’t given very much flexibility when it came to financing. Basically they either chose to agree to a three-year subscription fee, or they could look for something else. In a rather rare change of heart, Google has reversed the three-year requirement, and are now giving both sets of customers the option to buy the machines outright with one year of support instead. Clients will have the option to renew web-based admin, phone support, and hardware for years two and three, but it is no longer required.

More than 60 Ultrabook designs could become available next year and "11 or so designs" will be available by the end of this year, said Tom Kilroy, senior vice president and general manager of worldwide sales at Intel, in an interview following the company's third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday.

Just a few weeks ago Sony reportedly declined to offer a reason why it didn't want to jump on the ultrabook bandwagon. But speculation pointed to a company concerned over the high cost and low profit margins associated with Intel's new form factor. Sony also previously launched its own Z-series of ultra-portable VAIO laptops sporting high-performance hardware crammed inside an ultra-thin 0.66-inch design.
