ASUS P9X79 Deluxe Detailed

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Here are the first pictures of ASUS P9X79 Deluxe, the company's premium segment LGA2011 motherboard based on the X79 chipset. This features in ASUS' main motherboard lineup, and not sub-lineups such as Republic of Gamers (ROG) or The Ultimate Force (TUF). The P9X79 Deluxe is loaded with features and connectivity options. To begin with, the LGA2011 socket is powered by a next-generation Digi+ VRM design by ASUS, driven by Dual Intelligent Processors III (next-generation Energy Processing Unit (EPU) chip and TurboV Processing Unit (TPU)). Like with the ROG Rampage IV Extreme, VRM is spread across three sides of the socket, and each cluster of MOSFETs is cooled by heatsinks. The socket is wired...

Sprint's HTC EVO Design 4G now just $29.99 on Amazon

Sprint's HTC EVO Design 4G now just $29.99 on Amazon

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Good ol’ Amazon is offering the brand new HTC EVO Design 4G for just $29.99. That’s full 70% off (or “$70 less” whatever sounds better) Sprint’s price of $99.99. Needless to say, you’ll also have to put your signature on a new two-year contract to get the phone. On the other hand, if you’re upgrading or adding a new line, Amazon will take $79.99 out of your pocket. Finally, if you don’t want to commit on a two-year contract with Sprint, there’s the phone-only option, which costs $479.99.
As a reminder, the EVO Design 4G comes with a single-core 1.2GHz processor, 4-inch qHD (540×960 pixels) capacitive touchscreen, WiMAX, EV-DO Rev. A (used in areas where there’s no WiMAX signal around), Wi-Fi...

Vodafone UK now offers Nokia 700 for 26 GBP per month

Vodafone UK now offers Nokia 700 for 26 GBP per month

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Nokia 700, which we know as one of the first Symbian Belle smartphones, is now available from Vodafone UK. The Big Red carrier is offering Nokia’s baby for free on a two-year 26 GBP per month contract. That money gets you 300 minutes, unlimited texts, 500 MB of mobile data and 1GB of BT OpenZone Wi-Fi each month. Alternatively, there’s the cheaper 20.50 GBP per month option that rocks 100 minutes, 500 texts, 250 MB of data and the same 1GB of BT OpenZone Wi-Fi access per month. With this plan, however, you’ll have to pour out 99 GBP to get the phone.
Not sure I can recommend a Symbian Belle device to anyone these days, especially when we know that the same cash can get you a decent Android s...

Olympus chair accuses ex-CEO of power grab

Filed in: Olympus

The besieged chairman of Olympus has launched into a stinging attack on sacked Olympus CEO Michael Woodford over the company’s advisory fee scandal. Tsuyoshi Kikukawa delivered his rebuke via an internal company memo. In the memo, Kikukawa called Woodford’s actions “aberrant” and “unforgivable” in response to Woodford’s exposure of a series of exorbitant advisory fees that have totaled over $1 billion.
In the memo, Kikukawa stated that Woodford’s recent actions were the result of nothing more than a failed power grab. Using Woodford’s initials, Kikukawa stated that, “Director MCW was not satisfied unless he could control everything himself.”

Your HTC Android phone can haz 5GB of Dropbox storage for free now

Your HTC Android phone can haz 5GB of Dropbox storage for free now

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

HTC just made the morning for many of its fans. You don't need to go to the cloud, the cloud can come to you, is HTC's logic for partnering with Dropbox, and they have good reasoning. Why spend on R&D, when there are numerous great cloud storage services out there you can just team up with?
The Taiwanese announced via Twitter that they will be pairing 5GB of free storage with each HTC Android device, which is a more generous offer than the usual 2GB Dropbox gives to the freeriding subscribers, and equals HTC with storage offerings like iCloud, for example. The HTC Windows Phones don't need this for obvious reasons, since they already come with the 25GB free storage of SkyDrive.
The smartphon...

T-Mobile Reveals Galaxy Tab 10.1, Springboard Launch Dates

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

T-Mobile this week revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will arrive on November 2, while Huawei's Springboard tablet will hit its network on November 9.
Pricing for both devices has not yet been revealed.
The Springboard is Huawei's first Honeycomb tablet for the U.S., and PCMag got some hands-on time with the device at this month's CTIA trade show in San Diego. The 7-inch tablet includes a 1280-by-800 display and 5-megapixel camera. It runs a "mostly unmolested" version of Android, according to PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan, as well as a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor. Netflix is pre-loaded.
The Galaxy Tab features a 10.1-inch HD touch-screen display with 1280-by-800 resolution. It ru...

Intel doesn't expect ultrabooks to hit $699 anytime soon

Intel doesn't expect ultrabooks to hit $699 anytime soon

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NotebooksIntel

Intel's Asia-Pacific GM Navin Shenoy in an interview Tuesday said that ultrabooks weren't likely to get down to typical Windows PC levels in the near future. While Intel was helping to find ways to lower the price, Shenoy told Reuters that "more work needs to happen" from partners to dip much below the $999 price set by the originator of the category, the MacBook Air. The magic $699 price thought to bring mainstream adoption would come, but it wouldn't be in the first wave.
"At some point you'll have to be at that price point, but it doesn't have to be overnight," he explained. "It takes time to engineer a cost down."
He rejected, however, the calls from Windows PC builders to lower chip pri...

Grandfather of Artificial Intelligence John McCarthy passes away

Grandfather of Artificial Intelligence John McCarthy passes away

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

John McCarthy didn’t single-handedly invent what we now know widely as Artificial Intelligence, aka robot brains, but he did coin the term back in 1956 and is certainly one of the founders of the A.I. research field. Not only this, McCarthy was also a professor at Stanford University and a PhD in mathematics. The creator of the programming language Lisp passed away this week at the ripe old age of no less than 84 years.
The creators of the robot race shall never die, so is their legacy and their contribution to the eternal memory of mankind. This fellow was the first to propose and support the idea of selling computers in a sort of time-sharing way in which both applications and computing po...

iBuyPower Invites You to Go Bananas with 32GB of RAM on Any Sandy Bridge System

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: iBUYPOWER

Having 32GB of RAM is like ordering the all-you-can eat buffet and asking to have it super sized so you get a bigger plate and larger cup. Is there a point? Not for most (words that will undoubtedly come back to haunt in a few years), but for home users who can actually take advantage of gobs of system memory -- content creators, work-at-home CAD designers, etc. -- iBuyPower says it's the first system builder to offer a 32GB option on all Intel Sandy Bridge rigs.
"The amount of memory in a system significantly impacts the user’s experience, this is especially true with gaming systems and workstations," said Darren Su, Vice President of iBuyPower. "The option to build a system with 32GB of me...

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Last year, Optoma unveiled their latest pico projector, the PK320. This device features 80 ANSI lumens, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and WVGA (854 x 480) resolution. Today, it was unveiled that this projector is now available in the UK. The PK320 features a similar design as the PK301. However, the PK320 is a little heavier and comes with a brighter lamp system. The connection panel includes a diverse selection, including a microSD card slot, A/V inputs, a USB port, a VGA port, and an HDMI for digital content. The projector also has a 90 minute battery life, which is good for presentations or short movies. The PK320 retails for just under $450.

Samsung Exhibit II 4G to be shown off for T-Mobile at Walmart tomorrow, official channels November 2nd

Samsung Exhibit II 4G to be shown off for T-Mobile at Walmart tomorrow, official channels November 2nd

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

The original Samsung Exhibit was a mere blip on T-Mobile's radar screen when it originally launched, being obscured by titans like the HTC Sensation 4G. The sequel, curiously coming out a whole four months after its predecessor, is ready to see if it can buck the trend and offer a decent option to those seeking an inexpensive Android device. Starting at $30 after mail in rebate and with a two-year commitment, it's poised to launch tomorrow in Walmart stores nationwide, with stock coming into official T-Mobile channels on November 2nd. If you're feeling contract-averse, however, you can still procure the device for two Benjamins. Not bad for a phone that comes with Gingerbread, a 3.7-inch WVG...

Amazon UK has vendor with Samsung GALAXY Nexus in stock November 7th for $930

Amazon UK has vendor with Samsung GALAXY Nexus in stock November 7th for $930

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

According to Verizon's latest MAP listings, we expect to see the Samsung GALAXY Nexus launch in the States on November 10th. But if the listing for the phone spotted on Amazon's UK site is correct, we might see it released a few days earlier overseas and maybe-just maybe-in the U.S. as well. The listing comes from someone with the name "KingofGadgets" which might put a bit of a damper on this whole thing.
The version of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus on the Amazon UK site is SIM free and unlocked which means in the U.S., it will be running over AT&T's 3G pipelines. The price is 539.99 GBP which is approximately $930 USD. Of course, if you are a Verizon customer, and have an update to burn, you wi....

Nexus S port of Ice Cream Sandwich is available, if you can stand some rough edges

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Why wait to get an official bite of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when you can load it on your Nexus S right now? After a quick tease a few days ago, an early preview is available to all thanks to a few hard working developers, although beezy's post on Android Central warns you may have to live without WiFi and Bluetooth for the time being. His build is only tested on the Sprint Nexus S 4G, although concurrent work posted at XDA-Developers should give 3G Nexus S owners a shot at the port as well. As usual with these early tester ROMs YMMV, but those who enjoy life on the bleeding edge can hit the source links for more info.

Sprint denied access to AT&T documents in fight against merger

Sprint denied access to AT&T documents in fight against merger

Posted on Oct 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesAT&T

U.S. District Judge Ellen Huvelle recently shot down Sprint’s request to access a number of documents related to AT&T’s planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA. “You don’t stand in the shoes of the consumer or the Department of Justice,” Huvelle said. Sprint originally sued to block the merger in September, shortly after the U.S. Justice Department filed a similar case in August. AT&T recently asked a judge to toss the suit entirely and, like Huvelle, said Sprint was not in a position to argue from the consumer’s standpoint. “Sprint cannot wrap itself in the cloak of wireless service consumers’ interest because Sprint is not a consumer but instead a competitor in the sale of wireless services,” ...

Amazon profit falls 73% in Q3 despite record Kindle launch

Amazon reported third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, noting net sales increased 44% from the same quarter last year to $10.88 billion. That figure is on a par with Wall Street’s revenue expectations of $10.93 billion. Amazon reported EPS of $0.14, which missed the Street’s estimates of $0.24 per share. Net income fell 73% quarter-over-quarter, however. Amazon reported net income of $63 million during the third quarter, down from $231 million in the second quarter. The online retailer said September 28th was its biggest day ever for Kindle sales, including during the previous peak holiday season. “In the three weeks since launch, orders for electronic ink Kindles are double the previous launch,...
