New DoS Tool Kills SSL Servers With Just One PC

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Published by German hacker group The Hacker's Choice, the THC-SSL-DOS is designed to highlight weaknesses in SSL and force "the industry" to make SSL more secure.
"We decided to make the official release after realizing that this tool leaked to the public a couple of months ago" the group wrote in a blog post. "We are hoping that the fishy security in SSL does not go unnoticed. The industry should step in to fix the problem so that citizens are safe and secure again. SSL is using an aging method of protecting private data which is complex, unnecessary and not fit for the 21st century."

BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Curve 9360 MasterCard PayPass approved

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the BlackBerry Curve 9360 are the world's first SIM-based NFC smartphones to be MasterCard PayPass approved, Research in Motion has announced.
What this means is that the devices have met the financial giant's guidelines and, as such, any MasterCard PayPass-issuing bank will now be able to offer MasterCardPayPass-enabled accounts to the SIM card of these smartphones.
Basically this will turn your BlackBerry into a mobile wallet, in much the same way that the Samsung Wave 578 offers NFC action with Orange and Barclaycard.
"MasterCard is proud to be the first to certify these popular BlackBerry smartphones for mobile payments, and offer consumers another simple, ea...

RIM confirms PlayBook OS 2.0 delayed until February, still no BBM in sight

RIM confirms PlayBook OS 2.0 delayed until February, still no BBM in sight

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Well, we hope you weren't expecting to have PlayBook 2.0 up and running on your BlackBerry tablet any time soon, cause it's been officially delayed till at least February. Word has come straight from the mouth (well, keyboard) of David Smith, senior vice president for the PlayBook project. In a blog post Smith announced that RIM would be holding back on the release to ensure many of the new features, including native email and enterprise app deployment, work as advertised. The OS update will be getting a decently long beta test, with it rolling out to some in the Early Adopter Program "shortly." Sadly, it seems that some features have fallen by the wayside with the focus on polish -- namely,...

At the ARM TechCon 2011 event we got the much desired confirmation by Samsung's VP John Kalkman, that the mobile device maker will use the new Cortex-A7 plus ARM's latest big.LITTLE architecture to build a new Exynos chip in 2012: “I’m extremely excited to announce that Samsung will deliver a new Exynos processor in 2012 that leverages both the Cortex-A7 and big.Little technology to meet the crucial demands of always-on and always-connected computing.”
The new chip paradigm does what some chipmakers like NVIDIA or TI have been doing with their multicores for a while, combining low-powered cores with high-performance ones to achieve unmatched battery vs performance ratio. ARM leverages that ...

Nvidia to push future Tegra CPUs in servers

Looking beyond graphics processors, Nvidia is looking to push future Tegra chips into servers as the chip maker tries to break Intel's dominance in that market.
Nvidia is developing its first CPU for PCs and servers, code-named Project Denver, which is based on the ARM architecture and also aimed at mobile devices. The Denver core will go into future Tegra chips, and special improvements will be made to server chips, said Steve Scott, chief technology officer of Nvidia's Tesla product line of enterprise graphics chips.

Nexus One denied Ice Cream Sandwich, becomes official relic of Android's yesteryears

Nexus One denied Ice Cream Sandwich, becomes official relic of Android's yesteryears

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

If you're still clinging fast to Google's first ever Nexus device, now might be the time to start eyeing an upgrade. While the search giant's solidly confirmed an Ice Cream Sandwich destiny for owners of its penultimate Android flagship, the Nexus S, the same cannot be said for its HTC-made progenitor. It's not as though Mountain View's lost any love for its game-changing dev phone, rather that handset's 2010 guts just aren't up to snuff for the 4.0 polish. Besides, there are plenty of other more attractive and able-bodied smartphones to help you through the mourning process.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 makes appearance with new button layout

BlackBerry Bold 9790 makes appearance with new button layout

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is due for a launch sooner than later, if RIM’s latest blog posts are any indication, but some fresh pictures are showing us that the hardware layout may have significantly changed from what we had seen since the phone made its first appearance five months ago.
The navigation keys in the middle are no longer a seamless part of the front face, but instead look a lot like the Torch 9850 / 60. Yeah, it doesn’t look as good, but the tactile feedback can certainly be helpful when fiddling in the dark. The 9790 will also have the same slim, smooth, and sharp side convenience key style as the Torch 9850 / 60. The microUSB port has also been moved from the side to the bottom...

iPhone 4S launch drives record number of BlackBerry trade-ins

iPhone 4S launch drives record number of BlackBerry trade-ins

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Gazelle, a website that specializes in buying, selling and recycling gadgets, said on Tuesday that BlackBerry trade-ins recently reached an all-time high. Speaking with CNET, Gazelle chief gadget officer Anthony Scarsella said his company saw a “spike” after Research in Motion’s recent BlackBerry service outage, which spanned three days in some areas, but that Apple’s latest iPhone is mostly to blame for the surge. “In the grand scheme of BlackBerry [trade-in] growth over the past month, it can be pretty much entirely attributed to the launch of the iPhone 4S,” Scarsella explained. Additionally, Android trade-ins jumped 72% during the past month, the majority from Sprint customers, although ...

Galaxy Nexus 1080p video sample makes a damn good first impression

Galaxy Nexus 1080p video sample makes a damn good first impression

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

A photographer by the name of Romain Guy posted a sample video from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0 smartphone to his Google+ profile. The result? Quite good. It’s yet another example of the continuous innovation going on to improve mobile phone cameras. There are some caveats, however. One Hacker News member pointed out that “When doing a time lapse, the number of frames you need to capture per second is much, much lower than the number of frames you need to capture for live video.” Another member commented saying that he was a bit underwhelmed by the quality of the Galaxy Nexus camera: “The non-tracked shots are shaky, the highlights are blown out, and shadow detail is almost complete...

Does Verizon have exclusivity over the Samsung GALAXY Nexus?

Does Verizon have exclusivity over the Samsung GALAXY Nexus?

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Ever since the early days of the device, when it was thought to be called the DROID Prime, there was talk that Verizon would have some sort of exclusivity period with the Samsung GALAXY Nexus. No one knew for how long this exclusive period might last. In fact, a recent sign-up page posted online by Samsung asks those filing out the form to select from one of seven carriers including T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, Cellular South, U.S. Cellular and MetroPCS. So when a banner ad reads "Exclusively from Verizon GALAXY Nexus", confusion reigns.
A GSM version of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus does exist. This could point to a short exclusivity period for Verizon in the U.S, or perhaps the carrier will...

Pictures of LG Prada K2 leak; design still in flux

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

An anonymous tipster has just sent us a couple of photographs of what he is calling the LG Prada P940. Actually, it looks like the LG Prada K2, which is expected to be an Android powered version of the handset. This would be the third version of the LG Prada with the first model widely considered to be the first touchscreen cell phone commercially available. Our tipster says that this is not the final design.
With Gingerbread installed, this will be the first "smartphone" version of the LG Prada, which will come in at under 9mm thin. The 4.3 inch NOVA display comes with more than 1,000 nits allowing for a very bright screen. An 8MP camera is on back with a 1.3MP camera up front. n HSDPA+ ra...

HTC Raider 4G LTE heading up north to Bell and Rogers

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

The first LTE enabled handset expected to be available for AT&T will supposedly be the HTC Holiday. But when not getting ready to offer fast data speeds to the few AT&T customers who have access to the carrier's LTE pipeline, the phone will go by the name of the HTC Raider 4G LTE up in Canada for Bell. Designated for the Canadian mobile operator's Superphone category, the device will cost you $169.95 with the customary signed three-year contract up north. Without a contract, the price tag is a hefty $499.95. No launch date has been mentioned.
Bell's LTE network supports the phone and when out of coverage area, the HTC Raider 4G LTE will drop back to the HSPA+ 42Mbps network. The device itsel...
