Angry consumers start class action suit against RIM over outage

Earlier this month the network behind the popular Blackberry messaging service was out for days leaving users of Blackberry smartphones with no access to email, IM, and web surfing. RIM admitted at the time it had no idea what was causing the outage, but hacking was not the cause. After the service came back, RIM tried to soothe angry customers with free apps.
Free apps may have made some users feel better about the long outage, but for others free apps weren’t the answer. Reuters reports that RIM has now been hit with a class action suit over the extended outage. The suit was filed Wednesday against RIM in a court in Santa Ana, California. The suit was filed on behalf of all Blackberry user...

Yesterday Nokia unveiled the new Nokia Lumia Windows Phones at the Nokia World 2011. There is though more going on at this Nokia show. CNET captured the Nokia Kinetic Device prototype on camera. Nokia Kinetic is a tablet prototype that features a flexible screen. You can hold it with two hands and it would scroll through music collections or photo albums when twisted. Bending the Nokia Kinetic inward or outward zooms photos in and out or paused and played music.
As you can see the flexible tablet is a working device, but far from a real product that you can buy. It is definitely an interesting idea and a great demo product. If it really makes our lives easier with tablets in the future is th...

If you thought that the purse strings over in Mountain View might be running a bit tight following the decision to fork out $12.5 billion on Motorola (a deal that has yet to be finalised) then think again.
In 2011 the company has acquired no fewer than 56 companies and startups, shelling out a whopping $1.4 billion in the process.
The figures came to light after the Big G filed its Form 10-Q accounts with the United States Securities and Commission board, detailing all of its financial info for the current annum.
Last year it acquired 48 companies and that without the huge takeover of one of the world's largest mobile communication businesses.
The big outlays for Google were $676 million tak...

Samsung appeals Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction in Apple case

Samsung appeals Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction in Apple case

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

Samsung has appealed a ruling by an Australian court that prevents it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country in an effort to get the tablet on store shelves in time for the holidays. Samsung attorney Neil Young accused Justice Annabelle Bennett of making “irrelevant considerations” and “making errors of law in her approach” to the injunction. The request for an appeal hearing will be granted by Justice Lindsay Foster, likely for the week of November 21st, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Samsung and Apple are currently locked in a number of legal battles around the globe. Apple has successfully blocked Samsung’s local retailers in Australia and The Netherlands from sell...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus release date confirmed for November 17th in Europe

Samsung Galaxy Nexus release date confirmed for November 17th in Europe

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

Well, it may not be the official release date for any of the US carriers but we can now expect to see the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in Europe by November 17th. The date was announced informally at the recent Galaxy Note event from Samsung and while it’s not as soon as we’d like, a solid date is a solid date and we’re not really complaining.
Whether or not this date will be the same for any US release remains to be seen but the rumored date for Verizon’s LTE variant has been pegged (a few times) for November 10th. Either way, we’re about three weeks away before the official debut of the Galaxy Nexus in some form, and there’s still a chance that a US release could pop up even sooner.

Motorola XOOM 2 appears in Verizon system with LTE

Motorola XOOM 2 appears in Verizon system with LTE

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

It appears as though Motorola doesn’t want to make the same mistake twice as a screenshot of the Verizon inventory system shows the unannounced XOOM 2 tablet with 4G LTE connectivity built-in and internal memory capacities up to 64GB.
The original Motorola XOOM only had access to Verizon’s 3G network and was sold with the promise that users could send it in to Motorola in the future to upgrade the device. This hardware upgrade was to make it compatible with LTE. However it took much longer than many owners would’ve liked. When the LTE upgrade was finally made available, the XOOM was already heading towards obsolete status.
Shipping the original XOOM without LTE out of the box was a mistake...

Nokia CEO Sees “Broader Opportunity” With Windows 8, Hints At Tablets

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

In a brief interview with This Is My Next, Nokia CEO (and mole for Microsoft, clearly) Stephen Elop hinted strongly at the potential for a Nokia-built Windows 8 tablet. While his statement was, strictly speaking, more of a dodge, it’s clear that this is something they’re at least thinking about.
When asked about its role as a consumer electronics brand, Elop explained:

Apple will 'absolutely' launch a TV, Siri to replace remote according to report

Apple will 'absolutely' launch a TV, Siri to replace remote according to report

Apple has been planning to redesign the television since 2007 and when it finally launches the new set, it will replace the age-old remote control with Siri voice commands, The New York Times reported on Thursday. A recent quote from Steve Jobs’s biography — “I finally cracked it” — began circulating recently and, for many, it seemed to solidify rumors that Apple was going to enter the television market. The New York Times believes that quote was actually in reference to Jobs’s realization that Siri could be used to control a TV much better than a remote or a combination of a mouse and keyboard. You might be able to say “Play Arrested Development,” or “turn on the weather” from the comfort ...

Motorola DROID 4 appears...with LTE support

Motorola DROID 4 appears...with LTE support

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

With the Motorola DROID 3 just a few months old, it seems too early to even think about the Motorola DROID 4. But sure enough, Droid-Life obtained some pictures of the next version of Motorola's DROID series. This time, the device is said to feature LTE support and a 4" Super AMOLED screen (probably Super AMOLED Advanced, such as the one in the DROID RAZR).
Also, the Motorola DROID 4 will have a non-removable battery, unlike what we heard from a source earlier, and MotoACTV syncing. The rest of the specs seem familiar such as the 5 row QWERTY keyboard, 1080p video capture, back and front-facing cameras, HDMI out. The version of Android installed is a little more current at 2.3.5. Think Motor...

Nokia Exec – Apollo coming Mid-2012

Nokia Exec – Apollo coming Mid-2012

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Well some interesting news coming from Engadget today. A Nokia executive, Michael Halbherr, Executive VP for Location and Commerce, told engadget that Apollo, or Windows Phone 8, will be arriving in mid 2012. What is more they are pushing Microsoft to include NFC and “positioning framework” for the new release. This seems like a very quick turnaround and points again to the fact that Nokia had very little input into Mango and instead has played a large role in the development of Apollo.
This does make one ask the question of timing. How will Microsoft release two Tango updates and then Apollo before the second half of the year? Seems a bit unlikely but we will be following this develop...

Nokia announces a white N9 and the first software update for N9 owners

Nokia is currently holding their annual Nokia World event in London right now, and while the important announcements were seen yesterday, things like 4 feature phones and 2 smartphones, both the first Nokias to run Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, today the Finnish handset maker has surprised us by talking about the N9. Currently the N9 comes in black, blue, and pink, but later this year there will be a new choice: white. It may seem insignificant, especially since Nokia isn’t launching the N9 in very many countries, but Frank Zillikens, who heads up the product marketing for Nokia N9, says: “The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to ...

Sony will pay €1.05 billion to de-Ericsson its mobile joint venture

Ericsson on Thursday announced that it has agreed to sell its stake in Sony Ericsson to Sony Corporation for €1.05 billion in cash. The deal is in line with earlier reports. Sony will become the sole owner of the mobile company, and it will integrate Sony Ericsson devices into its “broad platform of network-connected consumer electronics products.” The deal also includes a cross-licensing and ownership agreement agreement whereby Sony will have access to a number of related patents. “This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and b...

Hot on the heels of HP's decision to hire a newly-appointed CEO comes an announcement from IBM that it too is welcoming a new CEO. The company this week announced that senior vice president and group executive for sales, marketing and strategy, Virgina Rometty, is to be the company's new chief executive officer and president. Rometty will step into the shoes of current IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer, Samuel Palmisano.
Palmisano has been CEO since 2002 and during his time at the helm, IBM's EPS has increased by almost five times, the company has generated over $100 billion in free cash flow, and invested more than $50 billion in research and development. Speaking in a sta...

HP Testing Windows 8 on TouchPads

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

Clayton Morris from FOX News reports that HP is currently doing "proof of concept work" testing the Preview Edition of Windows 8 on TouchPad tablets without webOS installed.
According to unnamed sources within HP, the company is having internal discussions about reviving the defunct webOS-based version after the supposed second fire sale wave takes place on an unspecified date. The company is also considering building an entirely new device instead with Windows 8 in mind.
The TouchPad was a brief glimmer on the market before HP pulled the device not two months after its debut. Yet despite the talk about selling off its PC division and putting webOS on hold, HP firmly stated that it had no pl...

ZyXEL MWR102 Router Fits in Your Pocket

ZyXEL MWR102 Router Fits in Your Pocket

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by MG1

If you're not the type to plop your router in one spot until it comes time to upgrade, ZyXEL's new MWR102 mobile wireless router is worth investigating. This is a pocket-sized router that can be used as an access point or client bridge and is designed for users on the go, especially those who often lug around wireless handheld devices, like smartphones, tablets, PDAs, game consoles, and the sort.
It's also USB powered, so no need to fret if the electrical outlets in your Motel 6 are in short supply. Setup is supposedly easy, and each MWR102 ships with a different default SSID and encryption enabled by default. The security key is plastered on the bottom of the router (which of course you sho...
