South Korea lifts ban on iOS games in time for iPhone 4S

South Korea lifts ban on iOS games in time for iPhone 4S

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

The South Korean government has lifted a ban on iOS games, reports say. Although the App Store has been accessible in Korea for some time, games were kept out because of rules making it illegal to sell titles not approved by the country's Game Ratings Board. Some limits began falling away in July, though, paving the way toward today's decision.
Koreans can now access some games which had been blocked for almost two years. Selection is currently limited, but is expected to increase quickly, especially as some developers began preparing games early on rumors the iOS ban would be lifted. Local developers have complained that the ban was hurting the Korean game industry, particular in a country ...

Facebook cookies could be tracking users even after they've cancelled their accounts

Facebook cookies could be tracking users even after they've cancelled their accounts

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

Bloomberg is reporting that Facebook is apparently tracking users' web activity even after they've cancelled their accounts. The Hamburg Data Protection agency, the European source of the reports, says that its probe uncovered that certain cookies installed after an account is opened remain even if the account is later closed, and that Facebook has justified this action in order to "guarantee" its security.
The Hamburg Data Protection agency, which functions as a privacy watchdog group within Germany, is unsurprisingly unimpressed with this excuse, and is asking Facebook to engage in a conversation about the behavior, which they say is essentially creating backend user-tracking profiles, whi...

Researchers steal Facebook user data with army of socialbots

Researchers steal Facebook user data with army of socialbots

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

Researchers at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver used a small array of scripts programmed to pass themselves off as real people to steal 250GB of personal information from Facebook users in just eight weeks.
They created 102 "socialbots" as part of a study on social network security, which included a name and picture of a fictitious person, and used programming interfaces from iheartquotes.com to embed pseudo-random quotes into status updates. They also used Facebook interfaces to send friend requests to around 5,000 randomly chosen profiles.
In order not to flag fraud detection systems they limited friendship requests to around 25 per day, which within two weeks saw 976, or 19-p...

Anonymous Can't Even Pretend to Fight Mexican Drug Cartels

Anonymous Can't Even Pretend to Fight Mexican Drug Cartels

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

The internet was briefly snorting up thick lines of hacker hype this week, abuzz over claims that Anonymous was going to attack bloodthirsty Mexican drug lords. Anonymous, the internet's antihero, versus Los Zetas, drug scum. Too bad it's completely bogus.
The Guardian argues Anonymous "retreats" from their plan to expose members of the notoriously violent (and vindictive) cartel. The Daily Beast says the collective "rethinks" the operation. But there was never really any #opcartel to begin with. Nothing to retreat from.
It's not just that #OpCartel has delivered zero Mexican fruit—Anonymous is a shell of its former self. Their top shelf talent is mostly arrested, their organization muddled ...

CyanogenMod 7 available for Motorola Atrix 4G

CyanogenMod 7 available for Motorola Atrix 4G

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

Anyone who loves their Motorola Atrix 4G but could do without Moto's custom Android skin, relief may be coming: nightly builds of CyanogenMod 7 have started rolling out for the phone. Despite the fact it isn't yet marked as "stable," Android Community reports that it runs pretty well, with WebTop functionality and the biometric unlocking sensor being the only main missing features. For many, that may be a small price to pay to run a clean version of Android, though the less daring among us might be better served waiting for a truly stable version to roll out before taking the plunge. At least Motorola and AT&T were kind enough to unlock the Atrix's bootloader when the Gingerbread software up...

Asus Tranformer Prime tablet taken apart by the FCC, exposing the Tegra 3 quad-core chip

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NotebooksASUS

The Asus Tranformer Prime Android slate has been disassembled by the FCC, exposing the first quad-core ARM-based chip to enter a retail device, NVIDIA Tegra 3, aka Kal-El. If we don't count the ZTE T98 tablet, that is.
Asus did indeed make good on its promise to deliver the first quad-core mobile device by a brand name manufacturer, and Tegra 3 promises a lot, with better graphics and less power consumption leading the pack. Well, Tegra 3 is actually penta-core, but let's not be petty and counting.
Since the Transformer Prime will be as much as other high-end tablets at $499, but future-proof for 2012, Asus might again have a tablet hit on its hands, come November 9, just like it did with th...

DroidLanding reactivated, contest coming

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

With the Motorola DROID RAZR expected to launch on November 10th, the DroidLanding spot has been reactivated according to a tweet. As Droid fans know, that bit of news means that a contest is coming and this time the top prize should be the DROID RAZR. For those who don't have an upgrade to burn on the latest Moto DROID, or find themselves a bit light in the wallet, this is a great opportunity to try to win the thinnest (7.1mm) LTE enabled smartphone on the planet.
We don't have an idea yet on what the rules of a contest will be. A few months ago, Verizon customers were told to install a special Augmented Reality app from the Android Market which allowed them to play in a virtual scavenger h...

Goodbye Nokia 600, we hardly knew ye

Goodbye Nokia 600, we hardly knew ye

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

Symbian just scored another blow. The Belle-installed Nokia 600 was announced in late August, destined to be a great music-centric phone for anyone trying to stay on a budget. Sadly, it appears its fate has been sealed before its release, as the company's taken down any pages on its websites that are related to the product. Then, if that weren't enough confirmation, it also broke the news of the handset's demise to a disappointed Facebook fan. We haven't been given a reason for the sudden decision to cease and desist, but we're not discounting the coincidence of this happening so shortly after the Lumia series was revealed.

House passes bill to freeze additional cell taxes

House passes bill to freeze additional cell taxes

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

If you’re like most people, you’ve opened up your cell phone bill and wondered how your $69.99 a month plan always seems to end up around the $80 mark or higher. The answer is taxes.
Back in February, TaxFoundation.org determined that the average U.S. wireless customer pays 16.26% in taxes and fees. Of that, 11.21% is from the state and local municipalities. Some states, such as Nebraska, Washington, New York, Florida, and Illinois, average between 20-24% in combined federal, state, and local taxes. This data has causes some to point out that in many states you pay more taxes on wireless than you do on goods such as cigarettes and alcohol.
On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives passed t...

HTC Flyer touches down at T-Mobile, Scribe pen not included

HTC Flyer touches down at T-Mobile, Scribe pen not included

Posted on Nov 03, 2011 by MG1

US Cellular's got one and so does Sprint (albeit under a re-branded banner). So, where's the Magenta-friendly HTC Flyer we saw creep up at the FCC this June? Well, it appears T-Mobile's been offering it for some time to business customers only, but that exclusivity's come to a close. The 7-inch Gingerbread slate with AWS bands is curiously absent from the operator's own online site, but you can still snag it from HTC for $299 with a new mobile broadband plan or $454 with a contract extension. Sadly, neither party's tossing in the HTC Scribe pen gratis, so you'll have to make due with your own digits for navigating or just pick it up separately. If this is the Sense-laden variant you've been ...

Even in death, with some of his flaws revealed to the public, Steve Jobs remains a fascinating personality for most Americans. The recently released biography of the man, by Walter Isaacson, sold 380,000 copies in the first week that it was on the shelves putting it on the list of best sellers for 2011. According to information from TheBookseller.com, the book outsold the next title on the list, John Grishom's "The Litigators", by a 3 to 1 margin.
Isaacson's book has already become the 18th best seller of the year and the has outsold the next most popular non-fiction title, Bill O' Reilly's "Killing Lincoln" by 8 times. But it is not just the U.S. where sales have taken off as 37,224 units ...

Mobile coupon industry will be worth $46 billion by 2016, analysts say

A recent report from Juniper Research suggests that the mobile coupon market will be worth $46 billion by 2015, a large jump from the $5.6 billion projected for the industry this year. Google Offers, a feature of the NFC-based Google Wallet mobile payment system, will be one catalyst for the growth. “Mobile coupons are going mainstream,” Juniper Research analyst David Snow said. “Cost effective mobile coupon campaigns are now within the reach of smaller retailers providing them with an easy way to drive profitable footfall and build customer loyalty. To ignore the potential of mobile coupons would be to ignore the future of mobile commerce.” A quick search of the iTunes App Store revealed do...
