iPhone 4S users suffer major Siri outage
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
It looks like Siri is undergoing its first major outage today, as iPhone 4S users take to the Web to complain. Attempting to use the service only results in a kind message from that nice robot lady saying: “Sorry, I am having trouble connecting to the network.” So, if you’re noticing that Siri hasn’t been working, don’t worry, you are not alone.
It hasn’t even been a month since the iPhone 4S was released, yet people are already discovering they can’t live without Siri. A quick search on Twitter makes that evident. Siri is a voice activated “personal assistant” that translates a user’s natural-language question into action. Functions span from digging out obscure facts from Wikipedia and Wol...

Nokia Lumia 800 coming to France on 16th November also
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 800
The release date of the Nokia Lumia 800 in UK was never in question, with the date emblazoned all over the ads.
France has not been as lucky, but Monsmartphone has manage to wheedle the date from customer support.
The Phone House was able to confirm the delivery date as the 16th November, the same date as UK, and presumably the other 3 countries involved in the launch party also.
The handset has so far scored well with out readers, and has benefitted from an unprecedented marketing campaign, which will hopefully also translate into strong sales.

BlackBerry Curve 9360 launched on Wind Mobile and Mobilicity
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryCurve 9360
Canada’s two plucky independent service providers, Wind Mobile and Mobilicity, now have the BlackBerry Curve 9360 on sale. Wind already announced their intentions for the 9360, along with the Torch 9810 and 9860. Prices differ a little bit between the two; Mobilicity is asking $299.99 without a contract, while Wind Mobile is charging $349, but has the option for folks to get it free on a WINDtab.
The BlackBerry 9360 is a slim, pocketable little phone, and though the specs aren’t up to snuff with the current top-of-the-line, it definitely blows the last generation out of the water. It’s got a 5 megapixel camera with flash (but no autofocus), 2.4-inch 480 x 360 display, 800 MHz processor, 512 ...

RIM now literally worth more dead than alive
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
RIM’s share price has declined so much, the once great smartphone giant is now worth less than the sum of its parts if asset stripped and sold as pieces.
With a market cap of only $9.85 Billion, the company is now worth little more than Skype which Microsoft purchased for $8.5 billion earlier this year.
“This is a wounded puppy,” Timothy Ghriskey, who oversees $2 billion as chief investment officer of Solaris Group LLC in Bedford Hills, New York, said in an interview. “They’ve been losing business, there’ve been operating technology problems. There isn’t a lot of customer loyalty anymore.”
RM’s market share was acknowledged to be only 9.2% in recent numbers released by Canalys, dropping prec...

Apple targeting porn sites that use iPhone name
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
According to Domain Name Wire, Apple has filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization against seven pornpgraphy sites that use the iPhone name as part of their web address. Even the site iPhone4S.com, which is merely the name of the Cupertino based tech firm's latest smartphone model, features hard-core pornography.
Because a privacy service is blocking the "Whois" information of the sites, the real owners of the offensive web pages cannot be found. Interestingly, the domain name iPhone4S.com was registered in August 2008, more than three years before Apple released a phone with that name. Apple owns the domain name iPhone4.com, but doesn't have a connection to iPhone...

Repairing those low-end Androids may cost carriers up to $2 billion
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
WDS, a company which provides device management and call center services to carriers, has done a study of 600 000 tech support calls from its centers in Europe, North America, Africa and Australia, and found out that those cheap Android phones don't come as cheap in the end.
Android has been taking over the smartphone world for a while now, and a lot of its current 57% market share success is due to affordable handsets that cost as little as $100 or less to produce, and which many carriers are offering at the low-end of their smartphone portfolios.
These comprise both of handsets that aren't from a well-established brand, as well as phones from Samsung, LG or other household names. Tim Deluc...

Apple says Kindle Fire is actually good for them
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleAmazonKindle Fire
When the Amazon Kindle Fire was announced a couple of weeks ago carrying a price tag of only $200, for the first time we thought that the iPad really has gotten some competition.
The Kindle Fire is smaller at 7 inches, but offers a dual-core processor and a heavily modified Android that make it desirable.
Now, you might expect Apple to be challenged, but CFO Peter Oppenheimer actually said the Fire was good for the iPad. How come? Here's what Barclays published based on an interview with Oppenheimer:
“While the pricing at $199 looks disruptive for what seems to be the iPad’s most important rising challenge, the Amazon Fire – it is important to note that it could fuel further fragmentation ...

LG Optimus 2X finally gets the Gingerbread update; Optimus 3D and Optimus Black later in November

LG is pretty crappy when it comes to firmware updates with their Optimus 2X being one of the last devices to get the Gingerbread treatment. Those of you living in Europe with the “world’s first smartphone with a dual-core processor” can finally get Android 2.3 update from LG — in case you haven’t took the “unofficial” route and rooted your way to Gingerbread.
Unfortunately, this update is only for folks who bought the unlocked device with no carrier subsidies and it’s still unclear when every Optimus 2X owner will get it. We’ll keep our eyes wide open and let you know as soon as we hear something new on that front.

Linux Advocates protest 'Designed for Windows 8' secure boot policy
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
The Linux Foundation, Red Hat, and Canonical have all registered discontent with Microsoft's new mandate that if OEMs want "Designed for Windows 8" certification, Secure Boot must be turned on by default. Microsoft's chosen implementation of the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) helps prevent boot loader attacks but also complicates matters for Linux: computers with the sticker will not be able to Secure Boot into the OS without help from OEMs. Microsoft has addressed these concerns by pointing to the Developer Preview tablet given away at the BUILD conference last month, which included the option to disable Secure Boot. However, using the feature in conjunction with Linux instead...

NASA confirms satellite hacks in Congressional advisory panel
Like UnlikeAcknowledging suspicions that two of NASA's earth observation satellites were hacked back in 2007 and 2008, the space agency has indeed confirmed "suspicious events" in a copy of an independent Congressional advisory panel on Chinese / US relations, obtained by Bloomberg News. NASA would not say whether the attacks were organized by the Chinese military as suspected, instead opting to assure the panel that no data was captured or manipulated and that they are working to establish an agency-wide space protection program. According to the report, hackers gained enough access to the Landsat-7 and Terra AM-1 earth mapping satellites to fully command the latter -- choosing not to act on it for un...
