Samsung Galaxy Note released in UK

Samsung Galaxy Note released in UK

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

The Galaxy Note surprised many with its 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED display at a time when some of us were still pondering whether or not 4.5-inches was overkill. Samsung's been pretty quiet about the plus-sized device since that announcement, but a Facebook event today has announced its imminent arrival. In case you forgot, the Galaxy Note comes with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB storage options, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera, and an S Pen stylus. The device has also been rooted by XDA Developers. While Samsung hasn't announced any pricing details, two online retailers have filled in that blank for us. Clove is selling the smartphone u...

Google+ gets Chrome extension, YouTube integration

Google+ gets Chrome extension, YouTube integration

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google+, which launched without so much as search capability, is finally starting to integrate with Google's other services. The company announced two Chrome extensions, which let you +1 any webpage or check your Google+ notifications when you're not in a Google app. (Why those needed to be separate apps is beyond us.) More interesting, though, is the new YouTube integration -- there's a small YouTube button in Google+ that launches a Pandora-style playlist of whatever kind of videos you want to watch, and makes it easy to share videos and playlists with your Circles as well. The feature's not available to everyone yet, but Google's rolling it out now and says this is the beginning of "bring...

Marvel to release comics digitally on the same day as print?

Marvel to release comics digitally on the same day as print?

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Marvell

Comic book mainstay Marvel, home to Spider Man, Captain America and X-Men, is set to adopt a simultaneous print and digital publishing model, Gizmodo reported today. Marvel has had apps for Android and iOS for a while now, but there has been a delay of weeks between the paper copies hitting the stores and readers getting their versions delivered digitally. If this turns out to be correct, the move resolves a major source of annoyance for users of the apps, and brings Marvel into line with its major rival, DC Comics. According to the report, the publisher plans to have its entire range sold under this new model by March 2012, excluding the Stephen King and MAX ranges.
Another concept also rep...

Flooding causes spike in HDD prices, Asus might run out this month

Flooding causes spike in HDD prices, Asus might run out this month

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

The catastrophic flooding in Thailand is expected to cause a drastic shortage of hard drives according to researchers at iSuppli. Some 660,000 Thailand residents are reportedly out of work after the country shuttered 14,000 factories, including facilities that produce hard drives for Western Digital and Seagate. Hard drive shipments are expected to decline 27.7% from 173 million units in the third quarter to 125 million in the fourth.
Both companies have adjusted their shipment estimates, but they've raised prices to meet revenue forecasts. Average hard drive prices will increase by 10% according to iSuppli, but certain models have increased by as much as 20 to 40%. Western Digital has been ...

CBS: We turned down an Apple TV deal because of ad split

CBS: We turned down an Apple TV deal because of ad split

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

CBS just announced its quarterly earnings a few hours ago, and CEO Les Moonves dropped a very interesting tidbit in on the call. When asked about possible streaming deals for the network, Moonves mentioned rather casually that the company had turned down a deal with Apple for a streaming TV agreement because it was based on an ad revenue split model.
This is all very interesting to us, of course, as Apple has long been rumored to be considering just such a subscription-based streaming TV service, but, as yet, none has materialized. The wounds were recently opened again with the publication of Walter Isaacson's biography, Steve Jobs, which quotes Jobs as having very recently talked about just...

How many times have you searched for "child beauty pageant winners" only to find the synopsis of a two year old episode of Toddlers and Tiaras when what you really wanted was a look at current win / loss statistics on the pageant circuit? Never? Well, take it from us — it's a real buzz kill. That's why we were pleased as punch to learn that Google has updated its search algorithm to take into account the "freshness" associated with search terms. According to Google fellow Amit Singhal, the change to the ranking algorithm adds "newness" (our word, not his) as a criteria for results. For instance, if a topic you search for is trending (say, Occupy Oakland) more recent posts will be favored. Th...

Drug Cartel Releases 'Anonymous' Hostage, But Battle Continues

Drug Cartel Releases 'Anonymous' Hostage, But Battle Continues

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Barrett Brown, a sometimes spokesman for the hacker collective Anonymous, said Thursday that the Zeta Mexican cartel had freed a kidnapped member of its group, but that he would continue to battle the violent gang on his own, outside of Anonymous.
The issue has divided the hacker community, with some Anonymous members calling for Brown to be stopped lest he get someone killed. Brown was unmoved, arguing in a Thursday Pastebin note that he will not abandon the plan "simply because there is a possibility of retaliation."
Last month, Anonymous posted a video online that pledged to release data about members of Zeta, as well as those who cooperate with the cartel, unless they released a member o...

Nokia CEO hints at possible Windows 8 tablet

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

While discussing his intentions to expand Nokia’s presence in the United States, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently made comments that suggest his company could have a Windows 8 tablet in the pipeline. “There’s a new tablet opportunity coming,” Elop told Bloomberg in a recent interview. “We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics [of the market].” Elop described Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system as a “supercharged” version of its Windows Phone operating system, implying a hint of interest in using the OS on a tablet. The two operating systems share a user interface called “Metro UI.” Nokia recently announced its first two Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 710 and ...

Apple is preparing to launch a slightly upgraded iPad 2 in March of 2012, DigiTimes reported on Thursday. The new iPad is rumored to be thinner and is said to offer better battery life than the current model. It is unclear what Apple will call the device launching in March, but the company reportedly has plans to launch a “real” iPad 3 during the third quarter of 2012. Samsung, Sharp and LG are said to be working on a new Retina Display for the next-generation iPad, which may also pack a faster A6 processor, but rumors of manufacturing issues have suggested it may take Apple longer than originally planned to introduce a model with that equipment. A report last month from Ticonderoga Securiti...

AT&T asks Sprint to disclose competition plans pending outcome of planned merger

AT&T asks Sprint to disclose competition plans pending outcome of planned merger

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T recently requested that a federal judge push Sprint to reveal what its plans for competition will be pending the outcome of AT&T’s planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA. Sprint has been a staunch opponent of the deal and it is clear that AT&T has at least some worry Sprint may try to team up with T-Mobile should the purchase be denied. “Sprint is a strong and vibrant competitor as evidenced by events in the past six months — a fact that is critical to AT&T’s defense of DOJ’s claim that the challenged merger will dampen competition in the mobile wireless industry,” AT&T attorney Steven Benz, who is an employee of Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel PLLC, said. In addition to AT&T’s...

Verizon to offer 'turbo' data speed boost in apps for a price

Verizon to offer 'turbo' data speed boost in apps for a price

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless will soon publish an API that allows users to temporarily “turbocharge” their data speeds for a fee. The new API must be implemented into mobile apps by their developers, and it will offer users a “turbo button” that gives individual apps a speed boost. PCMag reports that the service will be tied to an on-device payment system, and subscribers will have to pay each time they want to temporarily increase their data speeds. These pay-per-use speed boosts will also be given priority when Verizon’s network is congested. In order to work, the turbocharge feature requires that an app utilize a “network optimization API” that Verizon doesn’t expect to publish until the third quarte...

AT&T HTC Titan to have Beats Audio

AT&T HTC Titan to have Beats Audio

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

We are expecting a BIG announcement on the 7th in New York, with the massive HTC Titan for AT&T being the front-runner when it comes to devices expected to be launched.
Now a tweet from HTC’s USA twitter account featuring the #HTCBeats tag not only confirms that HTC will be involved, but strongly suggests the HTC Titan, already announced for AT&T, will feature Beats Audio.
While we know Beats Audio is mostly just a gimmick, its still good to see the Titan getting the full range of HTC’s available services, rather than inexplicably being a second class citizen.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus gets rooted

Samsung Galaxy Nexus gets rooted

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

Well, this didn’t take long. The Android community never seems to fail when it comes to amazing us, it turns out that one wily enthusiast has already developed a root solution for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus once it releases.
The way the “Superboot” program works is once a user installs it, a specialized boot image to the Galaxy Nexus appears, which enables the phone to automatically root at startup. This is really cool because you don’t have to worry about messing around with those annoying paritions to gain full control over your phone. Trust me, as someone who’s been rooting phones for over year, this program makes things way easier.
