Barnes & Noble launches Nook Tablet, lights a fire under Amazon

Barnes & Noble launches Nook Tablet, lights a fire under Amazon

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Yep, we had a feeling this one was coming. As expected, bookstore mega-chain Barnes & Noble has launched its answer to Amazon's Kindle Fire (and to a lesser extent, Kobo's multimedia Vox slate) -- also as expected, the thing looks an awful lot like its predecessor, the recently discounted Nook Color, right down to the metal bar on the bottom corner. Granted, B&N did already make the leap into the tablet space, when the Nook Color was upgraded earlier this year -- but the Nook Tablet brings more than just a new name, of course.

Research reveals prisons at risk from cyber attacks

Research reveals prisons at risk from cyber attacks

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Federal authorities are concerned after research has revealed that U.S. prisons are vulnerable to computer hackers, who could even be able to remotely open cell doors to aid jailbreaks. In a statement to the Washington Times, spokesman Chris Burke said the Federal Bureau of Prisons is "aware of this research and taking it very seriously."
The security systems in most prisons run using special computer equipment that utilizes industrial control systems (ICS) -- the same systems employed to control power plants, water treatment facilities and other critical infrastructure. ICS were in use in the Iranian nuclear power plant facility that was sabotaged successfully by the Stuxnet worm last year....

Reuters: HP considering letting go of webOS for a few hundred million

Reuters: HP considering letting go of webOS for a few hundred million

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Palm, a brand that was once loved by many who made the company’s delightfully simple and easy to use personal digital assistants an essential part of their lives, has been repeatedly kicked in the face over the past few years. On the brink of death, they got some money from a big mouth long haired venture capitalist named Roger McNamee, who then cashed in his chips shortly thereafter by selling the underdog smartphone vendor to one of America’s biggest corporations: HP. Sadly, Palm didn’t get any love and attention while in the belly of the beast, and the decision was made to stop producing hardware running their incredibly innovative webOS platform. Over 500 employees were fired, and the on...

Samsung GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus coming to T-Mobile on November 16

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

The Samsung GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus is an Android tablet that we are already familiar with. Announced a little over a month ago, the slate is meant to succeed the old-school GALAXY Tab, which brought the 7-inch tablet form factor to the mainstream. However, what we didn't know so far was whether any major carrier would be willing to add the 7.0 Plus to its lineup, but some light has just been shed on that matter as well.
T-Mobile just announced that it is going to offer the Samsung GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus beginning November 16. The tablet will be available for $249 after rebate and will come along with a 2-year Value Mobile Broadband plan attached to it.
So, what exactly do you get for your money? W...

Charlie Miller's latest iOS hack gets into the App Store, gets him tossed out

Charlie Miller's latest iOS hack gets into the App Store, gets him tossed out

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

This isn't the first brush Apple's iOS platform has had with apps that exploit security holes to run unsigned code, but according to the developer of InstaStock, this may be the first to get a security researcher booted from its developer program. Charlie Miller shared his discovery with Forbes earlier today, showing off an app which successfully made it through Apple's approval process despite packing the ability to download and run unsigned code. That could allow a malicious app to access user data or activate hardware features remotely. Apple pulled the app after the findings were published, and according to Miller, revoked his developer access shortly afterward for what seems to be a cle...

During an event in New York City on Monday, Microsoft announced that the popular music service Spotify will launch for Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) devices sometime during the day. Spotify allows users to stream free ad-supported music from a computer, but access to the service from mobile devices requires a $9.99 monthly subscription option. The monthly fee also gets rid of ads and allows users to store playlists on a mobile device for offline playback. Spotify is already available on Android and iOS, and the service has been very successful in the U.S. since launching this past July.

HTC Edge may be the first quad-core smartphone to market

HTC Edge may be the first quad-core smartphone to market

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Color us skeptical on this one, but rumors are coming down the pipeline about an HTC phone called the Edge. It's supposedly going to be the first Tegra 3-powered smartphone. According to Pocketnow, the device will supposedly offer a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, 4.7-inch 720p HD display, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP rear camera with f/2.2 lens and Beats Audio. Curiously, no LTE capability was mentioned specifically, though 21Mbps HSPA+ appears to be good to go, and there's a slight possibility of Sense 4.0 being included -- which given its proposed launch window of late Q1 / early Q2 2012, wouldn't be a huge surprise. We'd love to start seeing more quad-core goodness headed our way, so we're definitely keepin...

Motorola DROID 4 makes appearance in Verizon's computer system

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

We recently were able to show you some pictures of the Motorola DROID 4, and the phone now shows up in Verizon's internal testing system and on another inventory list. Between that information and what we told you about previously, the DROID 4 will have a 4 inch screen like the DROID 3, but this time it will be a Super AMOLED Advanced screen with qHD resolution-similar to what the 4.3 inch screen on the Motorola DROID RAZR is made of.
The internal testing data confirms earlier suspicions that the Motorola DROID 4 will be running over Verizon's LTE 4G network. It will be the first of the QWERTY-equipped Motorola DROID line to offer LTE connectivity. Also, the internal testing data shows that...

Hong Kong iPhone 4S pre-orders sell out in 10 minutes, analyst says

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders in Hong Kong sold out within just 10 minutes, analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said Monday in a note to investors. Pre-orders began last Friday and the phone will officially land in stores this Friday. White estimates that the Chinese market will be key to Apple’s continued growth. The analyst believes Apple’s revenue from “Greater China” — mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — topped $4.5 billion last quarter, a 270% increase from the same quarter in 2010. That figure was 16% of Apple’s total sales, up from the 2% of sales that Greater China represented in 2009. Apple currently owns and operates six official Apple Stores in China. White reiterated ...

Nokia to bear NFC guns in US, create its own mobile wallet?

Nokia to bear NFC guns in US, create its own mobile wallet?

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia is still champing at the bit when it comes to creating the so-called three horse race, but the Finnish mainstay has another three word secret weapon up its sleeve: NFC. In an interview with Electronista, the company's VP of Location and Commerce, Michael Halbherr, said the manufacturer plans to "equally support" NFC in the US, while remaining "accommodating and open" to various mobile payment schemes like Isis. He mentioned that it was "not clever" to commit to one payment system at this point, implying instead that Nokia may create its own version of the mobile wallet down the line. Although we're not sure which Nokia phone will be first to hit the States, looks like we won't have to ...

HTC to launch unique new tablet next year

HTC to launch unique new tablet next year

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHTC

HTC may launch a new tablet next year that it hopes will be distinct in a growing sea of Android tablets, Reuters recently reported. HTC already has a number of Android-powered tablets on the market including the 7-inch Flyer (EVO View 4G on Sprint) and the AT&T Jetstream 4G. “[The] tablet is a market we would like to try and test, to see whether we can make ourselves stand out and prevent a me-too product,” HTC CEO Peter Chou said in a recent media briefing. The company could make itself stand-out a bit by being the first to market with an Ice Cream Sandwich device, possibly pre-loaded with HTC’s unique Sense UI. Its Flyer Android tablet was loaded with HTC’s Sense user interface but it lau...

HTC EVO Design 4G for Sprint

HTC EVO Design 4G for Sprint

Posted on Nov 08, 2011 by MG1

The HTC EVO Design 4G continues the popular EVO line for Sprint, but for a fraction of the cost of what you’d normally expect to pay for the high-end Android smartphone line. The EVO Design 4G is attractive and has that unmistakable HTC build quality, and it runs Android 2.3.4 and runs HTC’s Sense 3.0 UI, so the phone is fresh and mostly up to date. It also supports Sprint’s WiMax network, hence the “4G” in its moniker, so you can expect fast web browsing and speedy data-intensive apps.
While the HTC EVO Design 4G is priced nicely at just $99, it doesn’t feel too much like a budget handset. It certainly has a few drawbacks, and it’s a little on the thick side compared to most of today’s smar...
