Like UnlikeFiled in: MonitorsHP2311gt
HP unveiled their new 2311gt HD monitor today. The screen measures 23 inches and uses passive 3D technology. It has full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and a 5ms response time. The passive technology uses polarized lenses, which is similar to the 3D technology used in the theaters. HP has included a dual pair of 3D glasses as well. The connection panel includes RGB, DVI, and an HDMI port. This gives the monitor the ability to act like an HDTV, but with limitations. Other major features include a 250 cd/m2 brightness, 2D-to-3D conversion, and a TN LCD display panel. HP stated that the 2311gt will be available soon in the UK. However, the retail price was not announced.

Google VP Bradley Horowitz responds to Mark Zuckerberg's Google+ comments
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Bradley Horowitz, Google's VP of Product, said "we are delighted to be underestimated" in response to Mark Zuckerberg's comments during an interview with Bloomberg on the new Google+ pages for businesses. When asked whether his service was in direct competition with Facebook, Horowitz focused on Google's plans, which are to gain more knowledge about Google users across all its services, rather than how the services compare. Horowitz claims the personal user information gained through Google+ can help it improve the level of service it gives across all products, and described that scenario as a "fantastic success." Horowitz also took a moment to discuss the way the media pits Google and Faceb...

Firefox 8 arrives with Twitter search functionality
Like UnlikeMozilla has announced the arrival of Firefox 8, a mere six weeks after the arrival of Firefox 7.
The new release, which has been in beta since the end of September, adds a number of interesting features – including Twitter search integration and on-demand tab group loading.
"This update includes new features that make web browsing easier and give users and developers more control over how they customize their web experience," explained Mozilla on its blog.
The new Twitter functionality may come in handy, given how below par Twitter's own search functionality is.
From Firefox 8 you can search for both hashtags and @ usernames.
The on-demand tab feature allows you to restore windows that have ...

Researchers find federal prisons vulnerable to Stuxnet-like hacking
Like UnlikeIndustrial control systems like those targeted by Stuxnet are actually used in many places, including our federal prisons. As a result, a research team recently found the security systems could be hacked to open cell doors, overload and freeze them, or even shut down the CCTV. Although the prison's SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems shouldn't have internet access, they are often thoughtlessly connected to allow software updates or email access, and that oversight allowed former CIA operations officer John Strauchs's team to put together the hack in a basement for less than $2,500. The research was presented to the CIA before going public and independently confirmed by t...

Boxee Box live TV integration revealed in unreleased Boxee 1.5 update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersD-LinkBoxee Box
It seems the Boxee Box will soon be able to receive TV broadcasts, as GigaOm discovered the feature in the unreleased Boxee 1.5 software update. A preview video shows that selecting Live TV brings up a dialog which tells you to connect an antenna or cable to the "Live TV dongle" and asks for your location so it can download a program guide. The software also allows you to "share your viewership," though it's unclear exactly what that means. GigaOm was unable to receive any channels with an EyeTV One TV tuner, so it might only be compatible with an official Live TV dongle we can only assume would be released soon after the update. Although it's doubtful this will work with your paid cable ser...

Apple settles MagSafe 'strain relief' lawsuit; get cash if you replaced a frayed AC adapter
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has been replacing faulty MagSafe adapters for three years now, but if you paid real dollars to get yours fixed, you may be owed all or part of your money back. The Cupertino computer company recently settled with the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit which alleged that the old T adapters were dangerously defective — they'd separate near the connector, like the picture above — and under the settlement terms, anyone who purchased a replacement adapter is owed up to $79. Just how much depends on when the replacement was purchased, relative to when the MacBook was bought, and of course you'll need to file some paperwork. Hope you kept your receipts! Find all the terms, conditions and c...

Adobe may have dropped Flash for mobile browsers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTablets
Adobe may have dropped Flash for mobile browsers according to ZDNet. The publication claims to have received a leaked transcript from an internal company email to Adobe employees that it will no longer develop its Flash Player, and that it will switch its emphasis from Flash on mobile devices to its AIR platform. One of the key marketing pitches adopted by Android device vendors is that Android offers an advantage of Apple’s iOS as its browser supports Adobe’s mobile version of its Flash Player plug-in.
ZDNet’s sources offered the following excerpt, from the Adobe internal email:
“Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps...

Barnes & Noble asked Justice Department to go after Microsoft in response to Android patent lawsuits
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleBarnes & NobleAndroid
Microsoft's strategy of demanding patent license fees from major Android device makers has been resoundingly successful in recent months, but that doesn't mean it's not controversial: the Wall Street Journal says Barnes & Noble has asked the Justice Department for an antitrust investigation into Redmond's attempts to "kill off" Android devices from smaller players with license fees and lawsuits. B&N told the government over the summer that "Microsoft's willingness to bully small players with expensive litigation raises a substantial barrier to entry" because only big companies can afford to pay the license fees. Unfortunately, we don't know how much Microsoft asks in fees, so we can't really...

Nuclear clocks could be 60x as accurate as atomic counterparts, less prone to errors
Like UnlikeFor years, atomic clocks have been considered the most accurate devices for tracking the slow march towards obsolescence, a subatomic particle vibrating a given number of times per second with relatively few issues. Now the reliability crown might be passed to the nuclear clock, which in addition to sounding gnarly, could prove to be less susceptible to errors from outside stimuli. It goes like this: although an atomic clock will measure a certain number of vibrations per second, external forces such as ambient electric and magnetic fields affect the electrons used in atomic clocks, causing mishaps. The particles used in nuclear clocks that are measured for vibrations -- and thus timekeeping...

Ericsson predicts 5 billion mobile data users by 2016
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ericsson
We all know that mobile is big business and that usage is exploding all around the globe, but Ericsson decided to put some numbers on just how crazy it's all going to get. The company has a number of predictions based on its Traffic and Market Data report, which point to mobile data usage increasing quite a lot in just the next 5 years.
Ericsson is annoyingly vague about how it came up with the data, citing nebulous "measurements" which were "recorded over several years". That doesn't help us in believing the predictions, but the numbers themselves are pretty intriguing. Ericsson is predicting that mobile data subscriptions will jump from approximately 900 million today to almost 5 billion ...

iOS 5.0.1 released early to select users in the AppleSeed program
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5

Participants in the program are being warned prior to updating their device that they will be unable to do...

Microsoft chasing down Huawei for Android patent license agreement
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHuaweiGoogleAndroid
Microsoft is chasing down Huawei in search of a patent licensing agreement, The Guardian reported on Tuesday. “Yes, Microsoft has come to us,” Huawei Devices chief marketing officer Victor Xu told The Guardian. ”We always respect the intellectual property of companies. But we have 65,000 patents worldwide too. We have enough to protect our interests. We are a very important stakeholder in Android.” Xu also said that “negotiations are in progress” with Microsoft, which takes home an estimated $444 million annually from Android royalties. Microsoft has a cross-licensing agreement with Samsung and has similar deals with HTC, ViewSonic and other Android device vendors. It is expected that Micros...
