Barnes & Noble asks feds to look at Microsoft's Android patent licensing tactics
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftBarnes & Noble
Bloomberg is reporting today that bookseller and Android tablet maker Barnes & Noble has asked U.S. regulators to investigate Microsoft's tactics in demanding patent royalties from manufacturers of Android-based smartphones and tablets.
In a letter sent to the Department of Justice's chief counsel for competition policy, Gene Kimmelman, the company claimed that "Microsoft is embarking on a campaign of asserting trivial and outmoded patents against manufacturers of Android devices" and "Microsoft is attempting to raise its rivals' costs in order to drive out competition and to deter innovation in mobile devices."
Microsoft filed a patent infringement suit against Barnes & Noble back in March ...

HP may decide fate of webOS tonight
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPPalmwebOS
HP is reportedly holding a meeting Tuesday night during which it may decide the fate of its webOS mobile platform, The Verge reported on Tuesday. The meeting will take place after the market closes and will be led by CEO Meg Whitman at 4:30 p.m. PST. According to Reuters, HP has been toying with the idea of selling the unit and possible suitors include Amazon, Intel, Oracle, Research In Motion and IBM. The potential sale will likely fetch far less than the $1.2 billion that HP paid to acquire Palm in 2010. HP originally said it was killing off webOS hardware in August, and recent reports have suggested HP will soon put the final nail in the webOS coffin and subsequently lay off 500 webOS emp...

Samsung Galaxy S II treated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, hats off to MIUI ROM
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy S IIAndroid 4.0
The Samsung Galaxy S II and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? To us that sounds like a killer combination, but while others would probably have to wait until early 2012 when Samsung is expected to roll out the ICS update, you can have it now if you dare flash the MIUI ROM on your S II.
The crafty developers behind one of the most popular mods for Android, have brought ICS, but it's not exactly in its vanilla form. You'd still get MIUI's signature looks and customization and not the neon glow of Android 4.0, so while you lose the UI elements, the functionality is there.

Verizon's Motorola Droid Bionic now available for $119 at Amazon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaVerizon WirelessAmazonDROID BIONIC
Amazon has once again lowered the price of Verizon’s Motorola Droid Bionic, now selling it for $119. Of course, a new two-year contract is required but that’s like given these days. And that’s still much lower than $249, which is the phone’s price at Verizon’s website.
Now, we all know Verizon will soon start selling the Droid RAZR that we also know as the “world’s thinnest smartphone” as well as the Nexus Galaxy, both of which are better in some ways than the Droid Bionic. Actually, RAZR is only thinner than the Bionic, while the rest of the specs are pretty much identical. That said, the Bionic is still one of the best smartphones in the Big Red’s portfolio and grabbing it for 120 bucks ma...

Sony Music Unlimited gets major update for PS3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
Sony released a major update today for its Music Unlimted service that streams music to PlayStation 3 consoles. The update brings an interface overhaul for the service on PS3, but more importantly, adds new music discovery capabilities as well as a “My Channels” feature that lets you customize your music listening experience.
The My Channels feature seems to take a page from Pandora, letting you create your own radio stations with songs selected based around your favorite artists. You type in the artist name and the station will automatically be populated with songs from that artist as well as similar songs from other artists. It’s also easier now to skip tracks by simply hitting the “dislik...

National broadband outage caused by router bug
Like UnlikeA vast number of Time Warner Cable customers arose from bed this Monday morning to discover that their Internet connections were down. Other ISPs have been affected as well, but TWC customers are clearly the loudest.
Time Warner Help tweeted about the problem this morning, saying, "We appear to be recovering from a large but brief internet outage affecting most of our service areas. Please attempt to connect again".
Reportedly, Time Warner cable subscribers as far West as Texas and as far East as New York may have experienced a network hiccup this morning which has been described as a "national outage". While Time Warner Cable clearly was affected, there have also been reports of other ISPs ...

Facebook, Fox News survive threats by Anonymous
Like UnlikeIt has been long rumored that Anonymous, the well-known hacktivist group, was planning to target Facebook on November 5th. Fortunately, for Facebook users everywhere, Guy Fawkes day has come and passed without incident.
There has been much skepticism over whether an attack on Facebook could be carried out at all. In late October, a supposed Anonymous member upped the ante by lumping Fox into the mix.
Anonymous expressed their discontent with Facebook after the company made a series of privacy blunders a few years ago. Since then, Anonymous has criticized Facebook for its complex privacy controls and the "opt-out" nature of its service. The hacktivist group has also denounced Fox recently for...

How 'Foldit' players and scientists simultaneously created better algorithms
Like UnlikeThe problem of calculating the way proteins fold is one that requires immense computational power, but can be helped along by humanity's innate ability to solve 3D puzzles. A crowd-sourced game called Foldit enables human players to contribute to defeating some truly awful diseases by figuring out how the proteins fit together. In some cases they even beat the scientists themselves to figuring out the structure of viruses — and they've made computers much better at it in their wake.
Proteins are long strings of amino acids, and much like the earbuds in your pocket can potentially fold up in any of a myriad of ways — but unlike the cable of your headphones, a protein can only ever fold in a s...

Google+ Pages announced for businesses

This week brands, businesses, bands, and more are being welcomed back to Google+, provided they didn’t get offended after having gotten kicked out several weeks ago, in an initiative known officially as Google+ Pages. As Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product for Google+ notes, “As most of you know, we “kicked out the brands” in the early going on Google+… Not because we don’t love them (we do!) but because we wanted to create the right experience for users, as well as the brands themselves.” Will the Google-based social networking powerhouse be able to gather the brands to its bosom?

Massive Time Warner Outage Hits the US
Like UnlikeTime Warner internet services are taking a dump all over the country today, with users in New York, LA, San Francisco, Kansas City, Dallas, Ohio, and other cities and regions without internet. Many areas are reporting that service is back to normal, but we've put in a call to Time Warner to see exactly what happened.
Were any of you guys affected this morning? I thought our fearless leader Joe Brown was going to start decapitating people if he didn't get his morning FPSRussia fix. For now, this seems like it was a minor outage, but it certainly puts the fear of god in us of something nationwide and longer lasting.

HTC talks patent deals to fight Apple, Android 4.0 updates
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
HTC outlined some of its Android plans on Monday that included both the courtroom and its products. In a far-ranging briefing, the company's CEO Peter Chou told Reuters his company was "open-minded" to the prospect of buying patents to escalate its fight with Apple. There weren't any specific plans, he said.
The company has so far had a tough time in legal battles with Apple, being found in violation in one complaint and having other attempts shot down. It has only made small gestures towards improving its ability to contest Apple's claims, buying S3 after a patent win and borrowing from Google and Motorola for countersuits.
In extra comments, Chou added that the company would push more into...
