BPI asks BT to block Pirate Bay or go back to court
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsWestinghouseLD-3235
BT has been asked to block access to The Pirate Bay after a court recently ruled that the ISP must cut off its users' access to file sharing site Newzbin2.
The British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) made the request, along with assorted film studios and music labels which all want to see the notorious filesharing site starved of users.
The letter asks BT to block The Pirate Bay voluntarily – if not, the industry bodies involved will pursue a court order to force its hand.
A letter of musical note
A BT spokesman explained that it is "in receipt of a letter from the BPI" and went on to explain, "BT is considering its response. In line with the Newzbin judgment, a court order will be needed befo...

Olympus delays results during scandal investigation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Olympus
Camera maker Olympus will delay reporting its financial results from the second quarter until later in November, the company revealed on Friday. It is doing so because it needs time to hear out an independent committe's investigation on a scandal involving allegedly paying excessive fees when it aquired Gyrus and other companies. The committee will look into whether there was any illegitimate or inappropriate activity or improper management decisions relating to the deals.
"We felt we needed to watch the progress of the independent committee's investigation," Olympus said in a statement.
Michael Woodford, a former CEO, confronted other execs at Olympus regarding more than $1 billion he belie...

Apple seeds iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 to developers, beta 1 was so yesterday...
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
If you downloaded yesterdays iOS 5 beta you might want to check that iPhone / iPad / iPod touch for an OTA update. No word on what's new in 9A404 -- a mere two builds from yesterdays 9A402 -- but the updated build should still bring solace to those suffering from battery-drain issues. We're getting errors trying to download the developer notes, but we'll update if we find anything new or noteworthy.

Kinect for Windows SDK beta 2 released to developers
Like UnlikeTo mark the one-year anniversary of the Kinect launch, Microsoft is releasing version 2 of the Kinect for Windows beta SDK. The main changes to this SDK is a 20 percent increase in speed; skeletal and joint tracking accuracy is also substantially improved — this improved tracking system should help developers create more responsive apps.
Microsoft announced these changes on its new official developers blog, which launched along with the new beta and an official Kinect for WIndows website. This update should bring us closer to the launch of Kinect for Windows' commercial SDK, which Microsoft reiterated would be available this spring.

Be Careful What You Tweet: CIA Monitoring Twitter, Facebook
Like UnlikeBefore you tweet an inside joke about a terrorist movie like "United 93" or "Munich," you should know—the CIA might start following you.
CIA employees known as "vengeful librarians" monitor Facebook and Twitter feeds, TV news channels and radio stations, Internet forums and chat rooms, and pretty much any form of media that's open to the public, according to the Associated Press, which received an exclusive tour of the nondescript brick building in Virginia where all this takes place.
Like the rest of us Twerps (defined: people on Twitter), these librarians anticipated the uprising in Egypt in February and obsessed over first-person accounts of the London riots and Vancouver brawl over the s...

Anonymous and Big Brother: Spy vs. Spy?
Like Unlike"Big Brother" entered into the lexicon and so vividly into the public imagination through George Orwell’s 1984. The main character, Winston, lives under totalitarian rule in a country named Oceania. His every movement and even thought are under surveillance. Any involvement by a government in what its citizens believe to be a private exchange is inevitably viewed in the context of this dystopia.
Technology, particularly social media, augments the modes and means of communication—but also the ease with which it can be monitored—causing privacy, the law, and public opinion to clash. This is further complicated by the tools of protest and the ways of quelling it also being one and the same.

Bill Gates Strikes Back
Like UnlikeI've been wondering how long it would take Bill Gates to strike back at the media and mavens who have spent the last two weeks praising Steve Jobs' life and legacy. Gates was further irked by a new biography that made sure Jobs got his last few digs in, needling Gates about his lack of good taste.
Jobs, years back, made a public declaration about Gates and Microsoft being tasteless entities that didn't know or even care about refinement. It galled Gates. Jobs stopped making such remarks when Microsoft came in during his return to Apple to help bail out the company with a big cash loan. Jobs was very subdued for years after that.
Once the loan was paid back, you could see Jobs begin to seethe...

Creative Zen X-Fi3 gets covered in FCC fingerprints
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersCreativeZEN X-Fi3
Remember the Zen X-Fi3, that little, bitty portable media player that we spent a bit of hands-on time with, back in September? Well, the FCC has had its crack at the thing, and the agency wasn't quite as kind, ripping pint-sized music player apart and displaying its innards for all the world to see, which might be for the best, really. While the outsides of the device aren't particularly exciting, the player's got some stuff going on under the hood, like built-in Bluetooth, which the company claims can stream high-quality audio courtesy of the apt-X codec. See the X-Fi3 exposed to the world in the gallery below.

Acer Iconia Tab A200 pictures leaked online
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAcerICONIA TAB A200-10g08u
This is the first we've seen of the Acer Iconia Tab A200, an as yet unannounced Android Honeycomb tablet that's come to light thanks to a brief post on the Bluetooth SIG website. Unfortunately, the leak is extremely short on details — in fact there are almost none to speak of, except that it'll have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and will be available worldwide. And yes, that's as big as the picture gets. There is some information online, most notably from a thread on XDA Developers which describes it as a "low-cost" Iconia Tab A500. Their data pegs it as having a rear camera, Dolby Mobile, new Acer Ring app and lockscreen shortcuts, and running Honeycomb 3.2.1. Our review of the A500 called it one of...

Vocal shareholder wants Yahoo co-founder Yang off board [U]
Like UnlikeThird Point, Yahoo's second largest shareholder, has called for Jerry Yang, the Internet giant's co-founder, to resign from the company's board of directors. This comes amid reports that Yang has been trying to get several private equity firms to back a plan that would keep him and current management in charge of the company. Daniel Loeb, Third Point's CEO, has also strongly suggested that Yahoo's chairman, Roy Bostock, also vacate his board position.
Yahoo has been on a rocky road since September. Early that month, Bostock fired then CEO Carol Bartz, who had been brought onboard after Yang was forced out when he became an obstacle to a deal between Yahoo and Microsoft in 2009. Yahoo then hi...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus might land on Verizon November 17
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessGALAXY Nexus
A "work in progress" doc from Verizon's system had been snapped, and it indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus might be hitting the channels November 17, with in-store marketing commencing two days earlier.
Now the guy that sent it warns that this is still not final: "been told the document pictured is a work in progress that will be sent out next week to all retail stores/partners along with promotional materials such as posters and flyers", but let's hope that the wording of the launch memo is work in progress, not the date itself.
Makes perfect sense to us, considering worldwide (well, European) launch scheduled for the same date, so, bring it on, Verizon, don't wait for those crazy days...

Siri is back in business, but reasons for the outage remain unclear
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
After a massive outage affecting iPhone 4S owners throughout the country, Siri, the intelligent, voice-controlled personal assistant, is back in businesses, as users are now reporting. As we previously mentioned, the feature stopped working properly yesterday quoting that network connection problems were to blame.
Why would a network connection failure be causing troubles? Well, even though Siri is integrated in iOS 5, it still relies on Apple's servers, to which it sends your input for processing. By doing so, the assistant is able to accurately interpret your commands and to respond to them accordingly.
Although Apple has yet to comment on the outage, a server overload sounds like a plausi...

We got a sneak peek at the device earlier this week, but just to recap, it has a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 touchscreen, dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video with LED flash, and a wide array of connectivity options, including HDMI, DLNA, and Wi-Fi direct support. With all of that, plus plugging into an LTE network supporting an average of 12 – 25 Mbps downloa...
