WikiLeaks Twitter Account Details Handed Over to US Authorities
Like UnlikeCash-strapped serious-gossip portal WikiLeaks is about to come under renewed scrutiny from the US Justice Department, thanks to a court ruling forcing Twitter to hand over details of who accessed the site's account.
The ruling doesn't cover the actual messages posted from, through or to the WikiLeaks Twitter account, though — only the IP addresses and email addresses of those associated with the account are to be handed over.

Huawei MediaPad, Vision get priced in sterling, will arrive in UK within months
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHuaweiMediaPad
We're still awaiting further details on the MediaPad's stateside arrival, but Huawei has already spilled the beans for those on the other side of the Atlantic. At an event in London this week, the Chinese manufacturer confirmed that its seven-inch, Honeycomb-plated slate will arrive in the UK by early 2012, with prices for the WiFi only version starting at £275 (around $437). The company also took the opportunity to announce the arrival of its Vision smartphone, which will invade Britain sometime before Christmas. Huawei says it'll cost around £25 (about $40), once provider subsidies are accounted for, though specific operators won't be announced until early next year. Rest assured, we'll ke...

Firefox 8 for Android released, brings security enhancements and more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
If that stock internet browser on your Android smartphone does not live up to your expectations, you are probably using one of its numerous alternatives. But even if it seemingly gets the job done, it is always a good idea seeing what the substitutes are, as they often come loaded with goodies you may have never thought you'd use.
Firefox for Android, one of the most popular alternatives to that built-in web browser, has just been updated to version 8, which brings along a set of both minor and major improvements. A Master Password feature has been included in the app's latest release and lets you encrypt the usernames and passwords that the browser stores onto your device. Another new addit...

Apps pre-installed on the Motorola DROID RAZR can be hidden or removed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID RAZR
Verizon customers holding an upgrade have had a tough decision to make between the Motorola DROID RAZR and the Samsung GALAXY Nexus. One of the factors that Big Red customers were using to decide between the two high-end phones was the fact that the DROID RAZR came loaded with Verizon and Motorola bloatware while the GALAXY Nexus is a pure Google experience.
But what if you could hide or even remove some of the pre-installed applications? There is a way. Holding on to an application inside the app tray will bring up some options including giving you the choice to hide the icon. It won't remove the app from the phone, but at least you will be able to replace the icon with your own choice on t...

Apple reportedly has no plans to bring Siri to older devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple will not bring its virtual personal assistant Siri to older devices, a new report claims to confirm. MSComputerVideos founder Michael Steeber on Tuesday posted an email conversation that allegedly took place between “someone who contacted Apple with a bug report” and Apple. In the exchange, a suggestion is posed to Apple asking the company to consider offering Siri to owners of older devices as part of a special paid update. “Siri only works on iPhone 4S and we currently have no plans to support older devices,” Apple’s engineering department reportedly responded. Based on technology from Apple’s Siri acquisition and Nuance Communications, Siri is a sought-after virtual personal assista...

Sony CEO: We're building 'a different kind of TV set,' just like Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: SonyApple
All eyes have been on Apple to reinvent the television set, but Sony CEO Howard Stringer recently confirmed that Sony, too, is working on re-imagining the TV. “There’s a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set,” Stringer said during a breakfast hosted recently by The Wall Street Journal. “We can’t continue selling TV sets [as we currently do]. Every TV set we all make loses money.” Stringer said that he has “no doubt” that Steve Jobs had intentions of designing a brand-new kind of television but said that “it will take a long time to transition to a new form of television.” Read on for more.
It has been widely reported that Apple will use its Siri voice control engine ...

Verizon 4G LTE rollout spreads in Virginia as competition gets intense
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
The 4G LTE roll-out on Verizon Wirelesscontinues and this time, the carrier has announced it will flick the switch in Roanoke, Virginia and nearby communities on Nov. 17. Last December, Verizon announced a goal of reaching over 185 million Americans by the end of 2011, and in less than one week, it will have fulfilled that promise. Verizon’s LTE network will officially be available in 178 cities nationwide and will cover more than 186 million Americans after Nov. 17.
While Big Red pushes forward with 4G speed, it’s now facing the heat from its biggest competitor. AT&T launched its LTE network in five major markets back in September — Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, and San Antonio — and e...

Motorola Pro+ lands on Bell, shows Canadians an Android BlackBerry
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaPRO+
The latest iteration of Motorola’s BlackBerry clone, the Pro+, has just landed in Canada by way of Bell Mobility.
Besides the familiar keyboard, the Motorola Pro+ packs 4 GB of local storage, a 1 GHz processor with 512 MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a 3.1-inch 640 x 480 touchscreen. Connectivity includes 14.4 Mbps HSPA, which Bell would like you to think is 4G, as well as Wi-Fi b/g/n with mobile hotspot capabilities, and Bluetooth 2.1 with enhanced data rate.
As a BlackBerry guy, I can see the appeal of a phone like this. There aren’t many Android handsets out there rocking a portrait-oriented physical keyboard, and the ones that do still don’t hold a candle to RIM. Whi...

RIM to forge ahead with Flash on the BlackBerry PlayBook, even if it's dead
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
Adobe may have killed off Flash for both TVs and mobile devices, but that isn't stopping RIM from continuing to support it on the PlayBook. In a statement provided to All Things D yesterday, the BlackBerry manufacturer confirmed that it's not giving up on the dream just yet, because it's one of the Flash Player source code licensees that Adobe will continue to support post mortem:
"As an Adobe source code licensee, we will continue to work on and release our own implementations. RIM remains committed to delivering an uncompromised Web browsing experience to our customers, including native support for Adobe Flash Player on our BlackBerry PlayBook tablet (similar to a desktop PC browser), as w...

HTC Ville detailed: HTC Sense 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, thinner than iPhone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCOne S
We just got the scoop on another brand new HTC handset, which will be part of the company’s Mobile World Congress announcements alongside the HTC Edge we detailed yesterday. The HTC Ville (codename) is set to launch in April with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and, for the first time, HTC Sense 4.0. The smartphone will feature a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Series 4 processor. In addition to those specifications, the HTC Ville will house an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated camera, just like the one on the HTC Edge, with 1080p HD video capture support. We’re told the handset won’t feature NFC due to the metal construction of the case, and ...

Microsoft has already accused B&N of patent infringement on some of the Nook readers B&N sells.

Microsoft may halt development work on Silverlight plugin after next release
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
It's not just Adobe that's altering its plans when it comes to browser plugins designed to play back rich web media — Microsoft's joining in too. New releases of Silverlight, Redmond's big competitor to Flash Player, are reportedly going to be abandoned after the launch of Silverlight 5, expected later this month. This information comes from multiple sources cited by the usually well-informed Mary Jo Foley. They don't know how long Microsoft will maintain support for Silverlight 5 or if there'll be any service packs, but it does seem like the company will be switching its operational focus to other areas and halting active development of Silverlight.
