Google Voice for Android finally gets mass texting capabilities

Google Voice for Android finally gets mass texting capabilities

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Sweet jumpin' Jehoshaphat, it finally happened -- Google Voice for Android now supports sending text messages to multiple recipients. Being able to have a single, archived repository of texts is great, but it was always somewhat bewildering that while you could send a mass SMS from the website you were stuck sending out individual missives on the app. Today's update, version 0.4.2.38, finally gives Voice the power to spam your contacts -- a pretty basic feature that even the lowliest of feature phones enjoys. So what are you waiting for, head over to the Market to get the update now. How else are you going to let all 300 of your closest acquaintances know the next time you're DJing during ha...

Google Music could launch without some major music labels

Google Music could launch without some major music labels

Filed in: Google

We’re a little more than 24 hours away from what should be a major event for Google Music but a report suggests that the music-buying service may launch without two of the major music labels.
CNET’s Greg Sandoval reports that Universal Music Group has signed on to the deal but Google Music will be missing Sony and Warner. Sandoval has a great track record when it comes to digital music stories, so I tend to believe this report. Additionally, T-Mobile is hosting an after party with Google and Maroon 5, Busta Rhymes and Drake are scheduled to appear and each of these artists are with Universal.

Netflix launches new tablet UI for Android; iPad version coming in a few weeks

Netflix launches new tablet UI for Android; iPad version coming in a few weeks

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Netflix, compelled by the increasing number of Android tablets now flooding the market, announced a brand new user interface for tablets on Tuesday. The company explained that the revamped UI now displays twice as many movie and TV titles, with larger cover art, and that users can easily swipe through titles to find additional content. The changes are all welcome, since we found the old UI was a bit sluggish while searching for something to watch. “In the last 12 months we have seen a threefold increase in how long Netflix members are watching on their tablets,” Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt said, noting the company wanted to introduce the redesigned UI in time for the expected inf...

Steve Jobs wanted to circumvent carriers, create Apple wireless network

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

During the Law Seminars International event in Seattle on Tuesday, Trilogy Partners chairman John Stanton said he spoke frequently with Steve Jobs about Jobs’s dream to create a wireless network owned and operated by Apple. “He wanted to replace carriers,” Stanton explained. “He and I spent a lot of time talking about whether synthetically you could create a carrier using Wi-Fi spectrum. That was part of his vision,” Stanton added, noting that he worked with Steve Jobs from 2005 through 2007. Jobs originally wanted to take advantage of unlicensed spectrum that Wi-Fi networks use, although it is unclear how advanced his plans or intentions for such a project were. Jobs reportedly nixed the id...

Facebook slammed by porn attack, investigation ongoing

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Are pornographic images invading your Facebook news feed? We have yet to see it here at BGR, but ZDNET recently reported that “gory, violent pictures” and “hardcore pornography” are spreading across the social network. Facebook says it is getting to the bottom of the problem, but hasn’t yet revealed a solution or how the fiasco started. “Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms,” Facebook spokesperson Andrew Noyes said. “We have recently experienced an increase in reports and we are investigating and addressing the issue.” It is unclea...

NVIDIA has introduced a new technology for workstations, known as Maximus, and what it claims to be the first supercomputer with ARM-based CPU/GPU hybrid hardware. Maximus enables computers to simultaneously handle interactive graphics and complex computations required to the resulting renderings.
The system utilizes the company's Quadro-series graphics processing units with the Tesla C2075 companion processor. The unified approach automatically assigns GPU computation work to the Tesla processor, while the Quadro hardware can focus on graphics functions.

Mac OS X sandbox security hole discovered, present in 10.5 and up

Mac OS X sandbox security hole discovered, present in 10.5 and up

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Starting with version 10.5 of its desktop OS, Apple has allowed developers to voluntarily remove functionality from their applications using a set of pre-defined profiles — nixing network access, or the ability to write to the filesystem, for example — as a way to limit the damage an app could do should it be compromised in the wild. CoreLabs Research has discovered a way to route around these limits: using Apple Events, a given application can launch other applications that don't have the same restrictions in place. Imagine an application that's been specifically prohibited from accessing the Internet being able to launch a fully-functioning Safari, and you'll get the idea.

Google Releases 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Source Code

Google Releases 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Source Code

Posted on Nov 15, 2011 by MG1

Google on Monday finally released the source code for Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.
But on the Google Forums, Jean-Baptiste M. "JBQ" Queru, a software engineer on the Android Open-Source Project, warned that "this is a large push," so developers should expect that "it will take some time to complete".
"If you sync before it's done, you'll get an incomplete copy that you won't be able to use, so please wait for us to give the all-clear before you sync," Queru wrote.
The source code is Android 4.0.1, which is the version that will be released on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
The release also includes the source code for Honeycomb, but "since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want everyone t...

Google has a secret facility that could lead to commercial uses of driverless cars and other high technology, sources uncovered late Sunday. According to a New York Times report, one such project involves a driverless car. An unnamed source said the car would be built in the US, and could be subsidized with ads that played in front of a driver for local businesses as they drive by.
Another, somewhat related undertaking at Google X involves robots. Robots could, for example, replace humans in the photographing of streets for Google Maps.
The Google X team includes Sebastian Thrun, one of the top robotics and artificial intelligence experts in the world. He is also a professor of computer scie...

HP TouchPad pops up on TigerDirect, refuses to roll over and play dead

Time and rapid inventory sell outs might've quenched the fury of late summer's TouchPad firesale. But if you were left outside of the webOS mourning soiree and are still keen to call that HP tab your own, TigerDirect's got a slew of the slates ready for the taking. You won't find that seductive sub-$100 price here, however, the web retailer is offering a rebate that'll cut the 32GB slate down to a very attractive $150. The future may still be uncertain for the mobile OS that was once was and could've been, but at least dual booting Android's a sure thing.
