Leica M9 Firmware Update 1.174
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasLeicaM9
Leica has issued a firmware update for the Leica M9 digital rangefinder camera. Version 1.174 addresses a compatibility issue related to select types of new memory cards, which has caused some users to lose photos captured with the camera. Note that Leica still warns against using San Disk Extreme Pro SDHC I UHS-I and San Disk Extreme HD Video SDHC I memory cards in the M9, as “some misbehaviour occurred in the test phase” and “100% freedom from errors cannot yet be guaranteed with them”. The company stresses that other SanDisk cards have been found to work fine in cameras equipped with the latest firmware, which you can download from the website below.

Valve confirms user data was stolen in Steam hacking
Like UnlikeValve has confirmed that the attacks on its forum late Sunday, which included its defacing before it was taken offline, extends beyond just user account details and includes personal information of those with Steam accounts.
"We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information," said Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve in a statement released on its forum homepage.
The forum has remained offline since the attacks took place, and it is uncertain when normal posting will return. It is likely to...

iOS battery issues still present admits Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleiPhone 4siOS 5
In an uncharacteristic move, Apple has admitted that the latest iOS 5 update, version 5.0.1, hasn’t actually fixed the battery issues everyone was hoping it would.
An Apple statement sent to AllThingsD states that the company is still working on investigating the issues, suggesting that the update was more about bug fixing than giving iPhone users longer battery life.
“The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues,” Apple said.
That’s likely to come as a blow if you were hoping the latest update was going to give you battery life that lasts into the night, rather th...

Comcast quietly rolls out IPv6 to subscribers
Like UnlikeDeployment of IPv6 is still in its infancy, but Comcast has started pushing the protocol out in a limited fashion to subscribers in select markets. That makes Comcast the first national ISP to deploy IPv6 and it is likely that others will follow suit in the near future.
IPv6 is the successor to IPv4, which aims to solve the long held apprehension that planet Earth will run out of available IP address space. Thanks to local network address translation (NAT) though, fears have been continually postponed. Because NAT allows homes and businesses to share a single Internet address amongst many devices, the number of unique IP addresses required for the world's population to access the web is far ...

Nokia owes Romania $10 million; tax authorities seize assets
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
Nokia’s local assets were seized by Romanian tax authorities on Friday after it was revealed the company’s Romania-based subsidiary owes the government $10 million, Bloomberg said Friday. “We decided to seize the assets as a precautionary measure to prevent Nokia from selling them before they pay their debt to the state,” head of Romania’s tax authority Sorin Blejnar said. “This won’t affect the activity of the factory.” Nokia announced in September that it would close its operations in the country, although the origin of the vendor’s $10 million in debt is unclear. According to Convert News, the debt may be related to bills that Nokia owes for transporting its materials in the country. Noki...

Logitech CEO: Google TV was 'a mistake' that 'cost us dearly'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Logitech
Speaking during the company’s Analyst and Investor Day recently, Logitech CEO Guerrino De Luca admitted the failure of the Logitech Revue Google TV set top box. De Luca said that Logitech has “no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue” after realizing that the launch of a “beta product” was “a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature.” Like Apple and Sony, Logitech had dreams of breathing fresh life into the television market, but combined with “miscues in EMEA” the launch ended up costing the company more than $100 million in operating profits and, despite advertising efforts with Kevin Bacon, did little to attract consumer interest. Read on for more.

Project Black Mirror upgrades Siri from voice to mind reading
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Some hobbyist hackers have rigged up an iPhone 4S to collect brain wave patterns from some simple ECG pads, translate them into synthesized speech, which is in turn pumped through the 3.5 mm headphone jack, and recognized by Siri as a usable command. Besides pressing the home key to initiate Siri, all you have to do is think your command, and your iPhone 4S will hop to it. The engineers expect that they’ll even be able to eliminate the need to press the home key, making it fully automatic. So far, the guys at Project Black Mirror have been able to link 25 brain wave patterns to specific Siri commands. Of course, right now the project is a bulky Arduino test board hooked up to a Macbook, whic...

IBM launches enterprise-level security service for mobile devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: IBM
Once upon a time it was pretty easy for corporate IT departments to secure the smartphones of their employees. You simply limited them to choosing a Windows Mobile or Blackberry device, which had enterprise security features already built in.
Alas, Windows Mobile is now an artifact of history, and by last count less than 1/5 U.S. smartphones is a BlackBerry. As Android and iOS smartphones and tablets dominate the ecosystem, IT departments have been scrambling to try and manage the security on the new devices.
Enter IBM’s Hosted Mobile Device Security Management service. The service includes a security app that installs on a phone or tablet, as well as management tools that allow an IT depart...

The BlackBerry Bold line has a history of white variants, and the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 has now lived up to its pedigree, scoring one with Vodafone UK. We've previously seen information that both Telus and Rogers are going to have the white version in Canada, that it'll be up for sale in Netherlands, and earlier this year there was a leaked shot of it from Dubai — but now the white 9900 finally gone official, in the UK anyway. iOS 5 jailbreak: 5.0.1 hacked already
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
While a proper, untethered iOS 5 jailbreak hasn’t been publicly released just yet, it’s a different story for those willing to put up with a tethered jailbreak. iOS 5 can be busted with Redsn0w, and now the latest firmware update, iOS 5.0.1, which is supposed to fix iPhone 4S battery life has been too.
Now there are a few caveats to this latest iOS 5 jailbreak: this does not work with dual-core iOS devices, so will only work with the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G and original iPad, and not the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. A tethered jailbreak also requires your iPhone to be plugged into a PC running Redsnow every time you need to restart, which can be a serious inconvenience.
