Google announces 200 million Android devices activated, 550,000 every day

Google announces 200 million Android devices activated, 550,000 every day

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

These days companies can’t just hold an event to launch a new product; they also like to brag about numbers. And at tonight’s Google Music event Google had some pretty impressive numbers to reveal. According to Big G more than 200 million Android devices have been activated to date. That number includes both phones and tablets, but given the state of Android tablet sales numbers we have to assume that 195 million or so are smartphones.
Those of you with a good memory may recall that Google announced their first 100 million activations at Google I/O back in May, a mere 6 months ago. So you can imagine a heck of a lot of people have activated Android phones on a daily basis. Google has you cov...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 available again in Germany

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 available again in Germany

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Back in August we reported that sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 were halted in Germany due to patent infringement claims from Apple. Apple claimed that the physical design of Samsung’s tablet was too close to the look of the iPad.
Samsung has redesigned the tablet and re-released it in Germany as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N. Cyberport, a German electronics retailer, is already taking orders for the white 16GB model of the tablet on its website for €549.
The picture below shows the old model at the bottom and the new Galaxy Tab 10.1N on the top. It looks as though the major difference is the metal trim on the new device wraps around further in the front. At this point in time, it looks ...

Android Global: South Korea Second Only To U.S. In App Downloads

Android Global: South Korea Second Only To U.S. In App Downloads

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Research firm research2guidance this morning published a report that offers key findings from an analysis of mobile app trends in the Android Market. The first point is perhaps not so surprising: Although we think of Android as having significant global reach as a mobile operating system, the U.S. remains (by far) the largest market for Android apps. According to the study, with over 3.49 billion total downloads as of September 2011 and with 50 percent of Android app downloads (to date) originating at home, the U.S. is dominating the Android app market.
However, the research firm is quick to point out that, although the U.S. leads, there is some saturation happening here, while other markets...

SIM-based NFC gains global support from 45 mobile carriers, all huddled around GSMA's standard

You knew that NFC hardware can be embedded into SIM cards, right? Right? Regardless of whether you've been paying attention, the practice is about to become a whole lot more common, as 45 of the world's largest mobile operators have extended their support for the GSM Association's standard. Among the networks, you'll find heavy hitters such as China Mobile and China Unicom (which account for nearly 800 million subscribers between the two), along with familiar names such as America Movil, AT&T, Deutsche Telecom, KPN, Orange, Rogers, SFR, SK Telecom, Softbank, Telus, Verizon and Vodafone. Even Isis, the unholy mobile payment lovechild of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, has pledged its support... i...

Verizon begins collecting user data for targeted ads, is kind enough to offer 'opt-out' escape route

Verizon begins collecting user data for targeted ads, is kind enough to offer 'opt-out' escape route

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon still wants to collect your personal information, but it'll understand if you decide to opt out. Really, it's cool. No hard feelings. The provider said as much yesterday, in an e-mail titled "Important notice about how Verizon Wireless uses information." The missive, sent to all VZW customers, essentially lays out the company's revamped privacy policy, originally unveiled last month. Under the new framework, Verizon will be able to monitor your browsing history, location, app usage, and demographic data, all in the name of targeted advertising and vaguely-titled "business and marketing reports." The good news is that you can always opt out of the scheme, either by phone or online. Th...

Money transfer service Xoom.com launches a mobile website

Money transfer service Xoom.com launches a mobile website

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

First of all you should know Xoom.com has nothing to do with Motorola’s Android tablet. Rather it’s a money transfer service that allows users quickly to beam money from one end of the world to the other.
Up until this point you needed a desktop-class browser (or a PC/Mac) to do that via Xoom.com and now there’s an “optimized for mobile” website that makes the process easier for on-the-go users, whether they own a high-end smartphone or simpler Internet-enabled feature phone. That said, we’re pretty confident Xoom’s mobile apps for various smartphone platforms are in development as we speak.

Kindle Fire rooted and splayed, source code released

Kindle Fire rooted and splayed, source code released

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

The Kindle Fire — it's just a BlackBerry PlayBook with a big Kindle logo imprinted on its back, right? To help you answer that burning question, iFixit has taken Amazon's brand new Android tablet into the lab and subjected it to the usual teardown treatment. The first major difference between the Fire and the PlayBook is in the port selection: Amazon offers just a 3.5mm headphone jack and a MicroUSB port that doubles up as both a data connector and power intake. There's also a power button sitting next to them and that's all the intrigue you'll find on the outside. No volume controls like on the PlayBook or any other portable device.

Facebook Feed Getting Too Adult? It's Not Just You

Facebook Feed Getting Too Adult? It's Not Just You

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

It’s not uncommon to see a free iPad scam pop up in your Facebook feed, but the latest apparent hack is a little more about shock than profit. An as yet unknown attack appears to be flooding some users’ feeds with images of gore and pornography. Facebook has acknowledged an increase in reports of such content, and is investigating.
Early indications from Facebook engineers point to a coordinated attack of unknown origin using cross-site scripting (XSS). Many Facebook threats spread through the use of click-bait and faked links that then hijack an account. The primary purpose for these attacks is financial gain, but this time the attackers seem to just be riling people up.

Visa labels digital wallet "V.me," plans dev program

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Visa has reportedly chosen the label V.me to represent its upcoming digital wallet service, which will be paired with a developer program. The service aims to compete with PayPal and other alternatives, providing users with a quick way to make web-based payments without typing in a full credit-card number.
The developer program is geared for a wide range of potential V.me implementations, with APIs for mobile apps and JavaScript code for websites. The company is currently offering tools to enable developers to integrate the payment system to be ready by the time the service officially launches.

Good Deal: Free OnLive MicroConsole with new Assassin's Creed pre-order

Good Deal: Free OnLive MicroConsole with new Assassin's Creed pre-order

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Game Consoles

Sure, you don't need a MicroConsole to take advantage of the OnLive cloud gaming service, just a good internet connection and most any old Mac or PC, but if your heart's set on streaming Assassin's Creed Revelations, you can pre-order the game by November 19th and get the whole OnLive Game System for free. It normally costs $99, though OnLive's actually been giving away quite a few of the tiny set-top boxes in an attempt to build the network out. Find the deal at our source links below, and expect to pay $50 (or £34.99 in the UK) for the game, and a shipping charge for the device itself. I reviewed the OnLive Game System back when I worked for Engadget, and you'll find that review right here...

WiFi Direct and DLNA get friendly, make streaming media a little bit easier

WiFi Direct and DLNA get friendly, make streaming media a little bit easier

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Networking Devices

DLNA and WiFi Direct are both pretty sweet technologies on their own but, together, they offer the promise of simple, wireless media streaming without the need for that pesky router middleman. The Digital Living Network Alliance has officially incorporated WiFi Direct into its interoperability guidelines, which means you could soon be streaming movies and music between devices (like your laptop and smartphone) without connecting to a home (or public) network. And don't forget, only one part of the equation needs to be WiFi Direct certified -- so don't worry that your aging computer doesn't support it, as long as your smartphone does you're golden. Check out the PR after the break.

Optimus 3D Gingerbread update coming, world shrugs, stares wistfully at Ice Cream Sandwich

Optimus 3D Gingerbread update coming, world shrugs, stares wistfully at Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted on Nov 16, 2011 by MG1

So we thought an update was coming last month, but like those three-dimensional phantasms the Optimus 3D is capable of conjuring, it appears it wasn't really there. LG now plans to lump the 2D to 3D app convertor, camera upgrades and some more nuggets into its feet-dragging Gingerbread upgrade, starting this month. Alongside 3D video editing and automatic image-stabilization, the customized version of Android 2.3 will unleash a speedier HSPA+ connection boosting maximum download speeds to 21Mbps, and "advanced copy/paste" -- something we're very excited about. LG also promises longer music playback from the upgraded 3D phone, with the software refresh pegged to start on carrier-unlocked hand...
