Intel's gettin' kinda heavy, it's got the power, gonna break your heart

Intel spent most of yesterday standing in the bar at the SC11 conference showing off the size of its computing prowess. Admittedly, it's on a roll; the Xeon E5 processor powers ten of the Top 500 supercomputers in the world, and Intel chips as a whole are found inside 85 percent of all the machines on the list -- not to mention the E5's newly minted PCI Express 3.0 compatibility. The Santa Clara chip maker is also building a new Exascale lab at the Barcelona Computing Center, a ten petaflop "Stampede" machine at the Texas Advanced Computing center and several other machines for Government agencies like NASA. The Seattle shindig was a great excuse for Intel's Rajeeb Hazra to show off the new ...

Nook Tablet limits internal storage for non-B&N purchased content to 1GB

Nook Tablet limits internal storage for non-B&N purchased content to 1GB

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Well, this is definitely a bummer. Barnes & Noble has spent a fair amount of time talking up all of the Nook Tablet's internal advantages over the Kindle Fire, a list that includes 16GB of storage to the Fire's 8GB. That particular spec may not be quite as good as it looks on paper, however. It seems that Barnes & Noble is currently limiting internal storage on the Android slate to 1GB of content not downloaded directly from B&N. Bummer, right? Especially for those expecting to store their multimedia content on the device. It's not all bad, though. Keep in mind that, unlike the Fire, the Nook's got a not-so-secret weapon -- expandable memory via a microSD card slot located behind the tablet'...

New Li-Ion Batteries Will Run Ten Times Longer and Charge Ten Times Quicker

New Li-Ion Batteries Will Run Ten Times Longer and Charge Ten Times Quicker

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

While gadgets improve by leaps and bounds every year, the technology that powers them hasn't. Batteries still suck, unless something comes of this research at Northwestern University that promises new lithium-ion alternatives that charge ten times faster with ten times the capacity.
Inside a battery, lithium ions travel between an anode and a cathode, passing through an electrolyte in the process. During charging, the speed at which those ions can get from the electrolyte to the anode affects how quickly a battery can be replenished. The ions have to pass between layers of thin graphene sheets, but in order to do so they must travel all the way to the edges first. This ends up creating mini ...

US Senate Holds Hearings on Great Firewall Of America

US Senate Holds Hearings on Great Firewall Of America

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Today, the United States Congress will hold hearings of an internet censorship system for America. That's right, "Land of the Free" gets a Great Firewall of its own, which is proposed to be practically as empowered as the one People's Republic of China uses, only that it threatens to have wider reaching consequences on areas such as freedom of speech, freedom of information (by that we're not endorsing piracy), and the integrity of the DNS system.
The original idea behind this bill is to curb piracy of digital information, be it content or proprietary software, but is peppered with loopholes that allow the US government to practically censor any content it wants, and for bigger internet-enab...

iOS 5.0.2 due next week, 5.1 to upgrade Siri, report claims

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Apple is at work on not one but two updates to iOS 5, claims German site Macerkopf.de. iOS 5.0.2 will allegedly be out by the end of next week, and attempt to fix battery life problems that went unresolved by v5.0.1. Battery drain has been a recurring issue with iOS updates, although most devices are typically unaffected.
The other planned update is iOS 5.1. The firmware will reportedly make several upgrades to Siri, expanding its functions. Users should, for instance, be able to take a photo or record video using voice commands, as well as toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on or off. When v5.1 might go live however is unknown.

Cyberspace attacks could provoke military response, says Defense Department

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

While the Department of Justice focuses on maintaining truthiness on the internet, the Defense Department is making its stance on cyber attacks clear. In no uncertain terms, the Pentagon has declared that when other alternatives prove ineffective, the United States reserves the right to respond to cyber attacks with the force of its military. As part of a report made public on Tuesday, Washington states that internet-based attacks upon the US government, economy, or military will receive the same treatment as more traditional, tangible threats against the country.

CyanogenMod 9 is now under development, with a loose arrival date of January expected. Version 8 had been reserved for Honeycomb, but has now been skipped over due to Google holding on to its source code. Cyanogen also states on Twitter that the Gingerbread-based build (7.2) will continue to receive attention while version 9 is put together. Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy S2 will be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the company’s UK arm has confirmed this week via Twitter.
While it should come as no surprise – even six months on, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still just about the most powerful phone on the market, and to ignore it would be a shock – it is reassuring to see Samsung publicly committing to it.
Ice Cream Sandwich, which launches on the Galaxy Nexus today, includes many new features, including face recognition unlock, improved voice commands and dictations, an overhauled UI and better multi-taking, with screenshots of each running app.
