T-Mobile's 42 Mbps HSPA+ network now covers 180 million Americans

T-Mobile's 42 Mbps HSPA+ network now covers 180 million Americans

Posted on Nov 21, 2011 by MG15

Earlier this week T-Mobile announced that they’ve launched 42 Mbps HSPA+ in 11 new markets, bringing the total number of markets where their high speed wireless broadband is available to 163. To put that into plain English, roughly 180 million Americans now have access to 42 Mbps HSPA+. They also announced that they’ve brought 21 Mbps HSPA+ to 9 additional markets, bringing the total to 208 markets, or more than 200 million Americans. Now for reasons we don’t quite understand, HSPA+ isn’t getting the same amount of love that LTE is. It’s been shown that 42 Mbps HSPA+ can compete perfectly well with LTE in terms of download speeds. Not only that, but HSPA+, unlike LTE, supports voice and SMS....

New 'first-gen' iPod nano replacements now shipping

New 'first-gen' iPod nano replacements now shipping

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Apple is now shipping replacement iPod nanos to customers who had Nanos from a certain batch in the first-generation production run that have been shown to have defective batteries that could, in rare circumstances, overheat or even catch fire. The new units are exactly the same as the replacements, and not brand new iPod nanos (which now hold 8GB or 16GB) as some had hoped. The original Nanos came in 1, 2 or 4GB capacities.
The replacement units are likely refurbished on the inside but include new shells and new batteries. They are otherwise identical to the original units, which debuted in late 2005 and replaced the iPod mini. They were quickly replaced with a second-generation version a y...

John Carmack codes around patent to release Doom 3 source

John Carmack codes around patent to release Doom 3 source

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Id Software's lawyers got a little uncomfortable about releasing the Doom 3 source code — a tradition at id — because of a small patent issue, but John Carmack saved the day by just coding around it. We're playing it a little fast and loose here, but the story is that between 1998 and 2000, both Carmack and Creative Labs independently developed a very similar method for rendering shadows in a 3D environment. Although the technique is commonly known as Carmack's Reverse, the patent went to Creative, so the lawyers understandably didn't want to get in trouble for open-sourcing somebody else's technology. However, the problem was apparently minor — according to a tweet from id's founder himself...

Huawei Honor shipping in December to select markets

Huawei Honor shipping in December to select markets

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Next month may be a long December, but we've got reason to believe that this year will be better than the last -- if you've been digging the scoop on the Huawei Honor, anyways. The device, with its colorful assortment of six different hues, will be ready for an official release in the twelfth month to China, Russia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, with other markets following later (there's no word on when the Honor will arrive on Cricket as the Glory). We've known for quite some time that it was coming this quarter, and we already know the specs: Huawei's new darling will come running Android 2.3.5 underneath a proprietary skin, be powered by a 1.4GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM, and off...

Where's that plane overhead going? Wolfram Alpha knows

Where's that plane overhead going? Wolfram Alpha knows

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Wolfram Alpha, the search engine that's more than just a search engine, has added a neat new trick to its repertoire: it can now answer the question, "where is that plane overhead going?" More than that, it can tell you where the flight's coming from, what airline is operating it, the altitude the plane is flying at, and even its angle from the horizon relative to you. All that info is coming into Wolfram Alpha from the US Federal Aviation Administration, though it arrives with a five-minute delay that means Wolfram's real time data is actually a projection of each plane's position — calculated on the basis of its last known heading, speed, and altitude — rather than a perfectly accurate mea...

AT&T iPhone 4S crushes Verizon in data testing

AT&T iPhone 4S crushes Verizon in data testing

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

AT&T’s HSPA+ network is the carrier’s iPhone 4S trump card, according to data speed analysis in the US, delivering websites twice as fast as CDMA rivals like Verizon. The fifth-gen Apple smartphone bested competing carriers on page rendering, uploads and downloads, analysts Metrico Wireless found in their testing of the iPhone 4S, though Verizon proved slightly more stable when it came to connecting – and not dropping – calls.

Hackers destroy pump at U.S. water utility plant

Hackers destroy pump at U.S. water utility plant

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Hackers have managed to destroy a water pump at a U.S. water utility plant after gaining access to the industrial control system (ICS) used to control the pump and other equipment, according to a state government report published on November 10.
The hackers, whose IP addresses were traced to Russia, breached the network of a company that makes SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems, stealing access to its customers' usernames and passwords. They then used this information to gain entry to the utility plant and operate a pump, turning it on and off until it burnt out and stopped functioning.
The report stated that the company had been observing minor glitches with the system...

Roku coming to UK and Canada early next year

Roku coming to UK and Canada early next year

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Roku

Roku's lineup of inexpensive media streamers has been popular enough in the US for the company to credibly talk about putting one under every TV, and now they're going international: Roku just announced that it'll be selling boxes in the UK and and Canada early next year. Of course, a streaming box is nothing without content services, so we'll see how many of Roku's channels make the trip with it, but Roku says it'll work on region-specific channels and Netflix has been making big moves in the UK, so the core pieces are definitely in place. As for Canada, well, you're cool too.

Developer discovers iChat code in iOS

Developer discovers iChat code in iOS

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

iOS developer John Heaton has discovered a string of iOS code that suggests Apple is working on bringing its popular iChat client to iOS devices. We first heard this rumor back in September, but now there appears to be some proof to back it up. iChat, not to be confused with iMessage, allows Mac users to chat with one another across various messaging platforms including AIM, Google Talk and more. Currently, iOS users can only access iMessage through the text message app and can only place FaceTime calls using the address book or Phone application. A refreshed iMessage platform for iOS could merge all of these into one easy to use buddy list. While it is still unclear how exactly Apple plans ...

Motorola Mobility sued for allegedly stealing source code

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Motorola

Lemko Corporation, a private software and systems developer, on Wednesday filed a complaint against Motorola Mobility alleging that it stole trade secrets and is financially benefiting from the misappropriation of Lemko’s source code. The company claims that Motorola hired an engineer who developed unique, protected code while employed by Lemko, and proceeded to implement the source code on Motorola’s servers without licensing the technology. The code in question relates to server side network-based positioning technology. Read on for more.
“Lemko is committed to protecting itself against the theft of its software,” Lemko’s Raymond Minkus said in a statement. ”Lemko will vigorously defend it...

Google confirms Verizon's LTE Galaxy Nexus dimensions and specifications

Google confirms Verizon's LTE Galaxy Nexus dimensions and specifications

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Four zillion new Galaxy Nexus promo videos not enough to sate your appetite for superphones? We hear ya. Google's specifications portal just went live for Verizon's looming LTE version of the world's first Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, and as expected, it's a wee bit bigger than the HSPA+ version. We heard back in Hong Kong that the LTE model would be slightly beefier -- presumably to house a larger battery to counter that energy-sucking LTE module -- and it seems that said scenario is indeed proving true. The HSPA+ build checks in at 135.5mm (h) x 67.94mm (w) x 8.94mm (d) thick, while the LTE model measures 135.5mm (h) x 67.94mm (w) x 9.47mm (d). That's right around half a millimeter thick...

Apple is slowing down iPad 2 production, gearing up for the iPad 3

Apple is slowing down iPad 2 production, gearing up for the iPad 3

Apple is purportedly slowing down iPad 2 production with 9.7-inch display shipment orders decreasing in the fourth quarter. Samsung, LG Display and Chimei Innolux have all received less orders from Cupertino in the last trimester, according to a DigiTimes report.
The slowdown could be due to Apple already having a surplus which it can rely on and could also be related to the upcoming production of the next-generation iPad. Samsung and sharp have reportedly already started shipping displays for what's expected to be the iPad 3 in October. Wintek and TPK Holding making touch panels for the next iPad, are expected to start shipping them in the November-December timeframe.

Google Music against the competition: is the latecomer any better?

Google Music against the competition: is the latecomer any better?

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google Music went out of beta yesterday. "Finally!" - we should add, as competing services such as Apple's iTunes and Amazon's MP3 Stores have been out there for quite a while. With the rollout, Google Music stands on par with the rival offerings. First, let's freshen up your minds about what the service does, though – Google Music allows you to purchase, store, stream and share your music.
It also offers some nice bonuses for its users including free song every day and some exclusive content, but comes with one major drawback – it hasn't signed one of the big four major labels Warner Music, and this means that you wouldn't be able to find artists like Aerosmith, Bee Gees, Michael Buble, Le...

Apple's new chairman: "There is an arrogance" in the company

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

Apple's 8-men board of directors has often been described as being almost family-like. Starting from yesterday, it has accepted Arthur Levinson to the role of non-executive chairman. Levinson has been on the board since 2000, so this might not seem like a change that would change the way Apple works. However, Levinson shared some of his thoughts about Cupertino's ways of talking to the public right away.
The former CEO of biotech company Genentech, mentioned that the company sometimes shows off its swagger and this attitude is not the right one for the world's biggest firm by market value.
"There is an arrogance," at Apple, which has to subside after Cupertino's growth to the top of the most...

Samsung Omnia W with North American 3G clears the FCC; Launching in Canada?

Samsung Omnia W with North American 3G clears the FCC; Launching in Canada?

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Samsung Omnia W (model GT-I8350T) with support for WCDMA and HSPA over the 850MHz spectrum has been caught while getting FCC’s seal of approval. If there were no for the Samsung Focus Flash, we would tell you this baby is heading to AT&T. However, we can’t do that given the similarities between the two devices — i.e. they are pretty much identical. Hence, our next bet has something to do with Canada, where we think Bell or Rogers could pick this one up and offer it to their customers. Needless to say, we have nothing confirmed on this front, but it’s kinda safe to bet every major carrier will want to take part in Microsoft’s mobile game and have a Windows Phone device in its portfolio. We’ll...
