Android.com gets overhauled, now friendly to the user

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Android's main web hub, Android.com, has received an overhaul from its previously developer-oriented version and now gets friendlier with the casual user by offering a neat new design with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich elements and tons of visuals allowing you to easily explore the platform. The launch of the overhauled website coincides with the roll out of the first device running on the platform, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but it also comes as a celebreation of 200 million activated Androids.
The website is now divided into three sections: “Discover Android”, “Get Apps” and “Develop Apps” with the first one offering a peek at the features of Android 4.0 you might not otherwise know about....

Amazon Kindle Fire hack allows installing Google apps, Nook Tablet can get the Amazon Appstore

Amazon Kindle Fire hack allows installing Google apps, Nook Tablet can get the Amazon Appstore

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

The Amazon Kindle Fire shocked us with its $199 price tag – after all, that's more than twice cheaper than the iPad, but with the lower price you'd have to compromise. The Kindle Fire features a dual-core processor, but still can't match in the spec race, but what could be more troubling for some – it doesn't have core apps like the Android Market with its hundreds of thousands of apps, and Google's suite of applications including Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Talk and Books among others.
But after all, the Kindle Fire does run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, albeit a heavily skinned version, so it should be able of running those applications. And it does – you'll just need to spend some time rooting th...

Motorola Mobility stockholders happy with Google merger, 9 out of 10 dentists agree

Motorola Mobility stockholders happy with Google merger, 9 out of 10 dentists agree

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MotorolaGoogle

The people have spoken, and they're pleased. Said people, of course, are Motorola Mobility's shareholders, who have given a seal of overwhelming approval to the company's merger with Google. The company confirmed this sentiment in a statement issued yesterday, declaring that a full 99 percent of shareholders gave a thumbs up to Big G's acquisition at a recent meeting that comprised 74 percent of all outstanding shares. It's likely that much of this optimism was fueled by a rosier Q3 earnings report (not to mention the relatively favorable conditions upon which the acquisition was determined), but Googorola isn't entirely out of the woods, as the federal government must still give the deal it...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus survives a key scratch test, worries about Gorilla Glass look silly now

Samsung Galaxy Nexus survives a key scratch test, worries about Gorilla Glass look silly now

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 by MG1

We were pretty confident that Samsung has done its homework to protect the screen on the Galaxy Nexus, but when Corning said there is no Gorilla Glass on the handset, rather another type of "fortified glass", there was a lot of backlash on the Internets with people getting disappointed.
As if to prove that Gorilla Glass is just the most popular household name when it comes to toughened glass, which makes Corning, its maker, a marketing genius, the screen on the Galaxy Nexus was scratched with keys by someone the minute after they got it, demonstrating that the other tough glass makers are good too.
The result is pretty (in)visible in video, so we can now sleep tight again, knowing that it w...

Rambus Loses Major Antitrust Case Against Hynix & Micron

Rambus Loses Major Antitrust Case Against Hynix & Micron

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

There are few companies in the tech world as infamous as Rambus, an IP-only RAM development firm. For the better part of 10 years now they have been engaged in court cases with virtually every RAM and x86 chipset manufacturer around over the violation of their patents. Through a long series of events SDRAM did end up implementing RAMBUS technologies, and the American courts have generally upheld the view that in spite of everything that happened while Rambus was a member of the JEDEC trade group that their patents and claims against other manufacturers for infringement are legitimate. At this point most companies using SDRAM have settled with Rambus on these matters.

Microsoft's Secret Social Network Gets Exposed

Microsoft's Secret Social Network Gets Exposed

Filed in: Microsoft

We know what you're thinking -- cyberspace needs another social network like, well, cyberspace needs another social network. No further example is necessary, and some would say it's tough enough trying to juggle Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, and even LinkedIn (for the more business oriented folk). Is there room for Microsoft to add yet another social portal?
The Redmond software giant is hellbent on finding out. Microsoft is working on a social network of its own caled Socl. Socl.com was actually mistakenly published to the Web last summer, and according to The Inquirer, what little was there was an "amateurish, ugly affair."

Wikipedia Makes Another Plea for Donations

Wikipedia Makes Another Plea for Donations

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Visit any Wikipedia page and you'll see at the top a big, bold font personal appeal from site founder Jimmy Wales who once again is asking for handouts. His plea starts off by letting visitors know Wikipedia is the No. 5 website in the world, serving 454 million people each month and dishing out billions of page views. Maintaining its modest army of 400 servers and 95 staff costs money, and advertising has no place on Wikipedia, Wales says. As for your cash, well, that's a different story.
"If everyone reading this donated $20, we would only have to fundraise for one day a year," Wales states on Wikipedia's donation page. "But not everyone can or will donate. And that's fine. Each year just ...

Backify Closes Free Accounts, Starts to Charge for Storage

Backify Closes Free Accounts, Starts to Charge for Storage

Posted on Nov 17, 2011 by MG1

Two months ago, we wrote about a new online storage provider called Backify. Backify got our attention because of their magnificent offer: 512GB of "totally free" online storage. I had to use quotes because Backify has now revealed their real business plan, and it's no longer free. From now on, the 512GB plan costs $1.50 a month. All free accounts will be closed on November 22nd, unless you are willing to pay the $1.50 monthly fee.
While their new prices are still good, I have to say I'm anything but pleased with their service. I tried to sign up for their free plan several times with multiple email accounts, and every time I faced some kind of an error. I even waited a couple of weeks to s...
