Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

For the December quarter, the company now expects revenue of at least $1.8 billion and gross margins above the high end of its business model range of 18 percent to 23 percent, and operating expenses of approximately $265 million, exclusive of unusual charges related to the floods, acquisition-related expenses and litigation. Unusual charges related to the floods are expected to be in the range of $225 million to $275 million for the December quarter, exclusive of any insurance recovery. The company expects to file a property damage claim of at least $50 million and an additional claim for business interruption during the December quarter. Droid RAZRMAX rumored - may bring larger battery

Droid RAZRMAX rumored - may bring larger battery

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

One of the caveats of having LTE in such a thin phone is battery life. Motorola may have caught on to that fact and may possibly be working on a refresh for the Motorola Droid RAZR called the Droid RAZRMAX.
The folks over at PocketNow discovered some interesting EXIF data embedded into some, otherwise uninteresting, photos. The data labels the device model that took the pictures as “DROID RAZRMAX-.” That model has not been spotted previously in EXIF data.
While that may not be very much evidence on its own, it is worth noting that a user over at Razr Forums reported being informed of that model by a Verizon employee. They said they were at a store looking at the RAZR and expressed some conce...

Sony Reader WiFi officially drops to $129.99

Sony Reader WiFi officially drops to $129.99

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Love 'em or hate 'em, one thing's for sure -- e-readers just keep getting cheaper. The latest to see a dip in price is the Sony Reader WiFi, which debuted at $149.99 just a couple of months back, but has now received a permanent drop to $129.99. What's more, Sony is also running a trade-in program through the end of December that will give you an additional $50 off if you turn in any old e-reader. Not quite the instant discount that an ad-supported Kindle gives you, but certainly not a bad deal if you're looking to upgrade from an older model.

Dell Streak 7 Android tablet discontinued

Dell Streak 7 Android tablet discontinued

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Like the Streak 5 before it, Dell has discontinued the Streak 7 tablet from its online store. The T-Mobile variant was similarly removed from the carrier's store earlier this year after being ignominiously denied a Honeycomb update, with a tiny moment back in the spotlight during T-Mobile's "Magenta Saturday sale."
Dell's site simply says that "Steak 7 is no longer available online, but you can browse our other mobile devices for similar products." The company's mobile products selection is actually looking pretty thin these days, with the Inspiron Duo holding down tablet duties and the Venue and Venue Pro smartphones still available. That leaves a pretty large hole for an Android tablet to ...

Apple’s US Samsung sales ban demands refused

Apple’s US Samsung sales ban demands refused

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungApple

Apple‘s attempts to have Samsung’s smartphones and tablets banned from sale in the US have been rejected in the US courts, with a ruling late on Friday throwing out the possibility of a preliminary injunction. ”It is not clear that an injunction on Samsung’s accused devices would prevent Apple from being irreparably harmed” US District Judge Lucy Koh concluded in the San Jose court, Reuters reports, arguing that Apple had not sufficiently demonstrated that its design patents would not be overturned in the eventual trial.

The new feature is specifically designed to make it easier to conference people into Hangout sessions while they're away from a computer.
Users can easily make calls from within a Hangout by clicking the invite users tab and selecting phone. Then just dial the number and you're all set.
The feature can also be used simply to make free phone calls to anyone in North America without a Google Voice account as the company seeks to improve the number of users frequenting the service.

Verzo's Kinzo phone gets lower price, non-GPS model

Verzo's Kinzo phone gets lower price, non-GPS model

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Czech company Verzo seems to be making good on its promise to let customers help decide the company's future. After complaints about its $459 Kinzo Android phone's high price and average specs, Verzo announced that it would be splitting the model into two lines, the Kinzo and the Kinzo Plus GPS. The former, now $349, comes without GPS or a car holder, while the latter, which retains all features and accessories, has dropped to $384. Early adopters will be refunded the price difference.
The move doesn't exactly put the phone into bargain territory, but it brings the price more in line with the Kinzo's single-core 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. The GPS Plus pack includes offline maps of eith...

Facebook Buys Gowalla

Facebook Buys Gowalla

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Facebook just bought Gowalla for an as yet undisclosed sum of money, CNN is reporting. It's another big get for the blue behemoth.
Gowalla is Foursquare's cuter, but far less popular cousin. It recently shifted focus from being a check-in based service, to an app that helps create location-based travel stories. CNN is reporting that the acquisition was made to help with Facebook's new Timeline feature. It's likely that it was also a talent buy, snapping up Gowalla founder Josh Williams and his team.

RIM takes $485 million hit on the PlayBook in Q3

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Just how much is the PlayBook costing RIM? The BlackBerry-maker revealed that it will be taking a $485 million hit in the third fiscal quarter, thanks to the QNX-packing tablet. The charge reflects flagging sales on the PlayBook, which moved some 500,000 units in its first quarter, followed by 250,000 and 150,000 in the following two. In spite of such numbers, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer remains committed to the tablet, which has seen some healthy price drops in recent weeks, in hopes of staying competitive amongst new crop of budget tablets.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Delayed in Australia (Again)

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Delayed in Australia (Again)

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Samsung was dealt another setback this week in its bid to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia when a court again delayed its release in the country so Apple could file an appeal.
Earlier this week, the full Federal Court of Australia overturned an earlier ruling that banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the region. The device was temporarily banned due to a patent dispute with Apple.
As reported by Reuters, that ban was scheduled to be lifted at 4pm GMT on Friday, but the court today extended it to Dec. 9 so Apple can file its objections.
In its ruling earlier this week, the full court found that Justice Annabelle Bennett did not adequately assess the strength of Apple's patent claims when she al...

Android 4.0 ported to x86 platforms by Android-x86 project

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

The Android-x86 project has ported Google's open-source code to x86 platforms, meaning that developers can now take advantage of Android 4.0 on AMD and Intel based tablets. The release includes support for Wi-Fi, multitouch, and OpenGL hardware acceleration for AMD chipsets, but sound, camera, Ethernet, and hardware acceleration for Intel platforms is not working yet. The team has a special install package for AMD Brazos tablets — interestingly, Chih-Wei Huang from the Android-x86 project says that AMD provides the team with great support, including the donation of devices and help from engineers, while Intel hasn't pitched in. (But we already know that Intel is working on x86 based Android ...

Windows 8 coming your way February 2012

Windows 8 coming your way February 2012

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Windows 8 is set to arrive in public beta form in February next year, allowing early access to the new OS from the start of next year.
A post by The Next Web points to the February release date, citing sources close to Microsoft. It clears up a lot of the speculation over exactly when Windows 8 is set to arrive in beta form. Many expect a 2012 release for the final build of the OS, with the February beta adding further weight to this rumour. No exact date has yet been given for the shipping of Windows 8.
The new operating system sees a major departure from Microsoft's traditional UI, incorporating a home page which draws heavily from Windows Phone 7. The Metro UI of the OS uses similar live...

HDD Parts Shortage Lessens: HDD Prices To Drop?

HDD Parts Shortage Lessens: HDD Prices To Drop?

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Nidec Corp, manufacturer of hard disc drive motors and other HDD components, has reported that after just six weeks since the Thailand floods hit, nine out of its ten factories are operational again, although not all are yet at full capacity. Supplies of HDDs should therefore slowly improve as the parts shortage eases, hopefully with the welcome consequence that the price should drift downwards. Nidec issued this statement about the situation:
We will continue our efforts to further improve the utilization of the factories whose operations have resumed and to bring the company’s other flood-stricken factories back into operation to the earliest extent possible. The exact amount of damage and...

US Cyber Command completes major cyber attack simulation, seems pleased with the results

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

The US Cyber Command is barely out of its infancy, but it's already crossed one milestone off its to-do list, with the successful completion of its first major test run. The exercise, known as Cyber Flag, was carried out over the course of a single week at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, where some 300 experts put their defense skills to the test. According to Col. Rivers J. Johnson, the participants were divided into two teams: "good guys," and "bad guys." The latter were delegated with the task of infiltrating the Cyber Command's networks, while the former were charged with defending the mock cyberattack and keeping the government's VPN free of malware. The idea, according to the agency, ...

AT&T LTE network goes live in parts of New York City

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesAT&T

AT&T's 4G LTE hasn't officially been rolled out in New York City yet, but it looks like the super-fast network is already live. As we ran speed tests on our LG Nitro HD review unit around Manhattan and Brooklyn, we got speeds as high as 41Mbps down and 15Mbps up, which wouldn't come from anything other than a brand-new, traffic-free LTE network. (Plus, the "4G LTE" icon next to the signal meter is a dead giveaway.) Speeds weren't consistently that fast, though — we got 5.8Mbps down and 3.7 up at a test in midtown. A tipster has also reported that the Samsung Skyrocket is getting LTE coverage in Manhattan, so if you've got a Skyrocket or HTC Vivid, today's probably a good day to stream some H...
