Is this FCC filing for the Motorola DROID 4?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID 4
A new filing from Motorola has just passed through the FCC, but unfortunately there isn't enough identifiable information to pinpoint what device it is, although the smart money is on the DROID 4.
The FCC filing is for a Verizon device with a world-phone radio compatible with CDMA/LTE, GSM 850/1900, WCDMA and EDGE. Although, the filing notes that the GSM/EDGE/WCDMA options "have been disabled by firmware and are SIM locked for all US carriers", so this device is Verizon-only. As we said, there is nothing to confirm this as the DROID 4, but the information all fits.

European regulators set sights on Carrier IQ, rootkit scandal goes international
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Most of the bruhaha over Carrier IQ and its activity-tracking rootkit has been contained to the US so far. That's about to change though, and the software company could find itself at the center of an international privacy scandal. The British Information Commissioner's Office and the European Consumers' Organization have both started looking into the diagnostics software, while the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection has specifically engaged with Apple over its inclusion of parts of Carrier IQ's suite in iOS. This, of course, comes only days after US lawmakers requested their own government open an investigation. So far, all of the major British providers have denied using the tool on...

Now you can install the Android Market on your rooted Kindle Fire
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsGoogleAmazonAndroidKindle Fire
Hackers have been making steady progress on the Kindle Fire, but a fairly important milestone was reached yesterday – rooted users can install the Android Market, providing access to all of the Android apps they already purchased through the official market. Prior to this, users had to choose between repurchasing the apps from Amazon’s market or installing a custom ROM.
Amazon may not be thrilled – they are selling each Fire at a loss and hope to make their profit from selling users content. This is a victory for consumers, however, who will most likely still want to use Amazon’s services, but not be forced to double-dip on apps they already paid money for.
The method involves connecting you...

Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHTCFlyer

From the sound of it all, it seems as though the long awaited Honeycomb software update for the 7-inchh tablet is starting to roll out – in Europe so far. Specifically, HTC Flyer users in France and Holland report that they’re started receiving the anticipated update that brings the device to software version 3.55.405.1. Rolling it out via an over-the-air process, which ...

T-Mobile Galaxy S II is the best smartphone T-Mobile offers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungT-MobileGalaxy S II
Few days ago one of our readers sent me a question, asking me which is the best device in T-Mobile’s portfolio. I immediately responded – Samsung Galaxy S II.
First of all, T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II is pretty much the fastest Galaxy S II out there. Sure there’s AT&T’s Skyrocket version that sings along LTE, but as you probably know – LTE signal isn’t available everywhere. What’s more, even if you get it and presuming you’re in the area where both AT&T’s LTE and T-Mobile’s HSPA+ signals are rock solid – you would hardly notice a difference. T-Mobile’s version of Sammy’s superphone supports download speeds of up to 42 Mbps!

All T-Mobile smartphones with Carrier IQ revealed by a leaked memo
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesT-Mobile
With the Carrier IQ scandal making more and more headlines lately, you might be wondering whether the smartphone in your hand does indeed have the controversial software installed or not. One way to do that is by using an Android app that can detect Carrier IQ, but if you are a T-Mobile customer, checking out this leaked memo from the carrier's internal system might be easier.
Below is the list of all T-Mobile devices that are currently on sale and have Carrier IQ installed. The carrier, however, states that the software is not used to eavesdrop on people, rather to collect metric data in order to improve the overall user experience. Here is the list of smartphones that are mentioned in the ...

Google Wallet to be blocked by Verizon on Samsung GALAXY Nexus?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessGALAXY Nexus
While many potential buyers of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus didn't give it a second thought, others figured that they would be buying a device that would probably work with Google Wallet. Like the only other smartphone that supports Google Wallet (the Google Nexus 4G), the GALAXY Nexus will have the necessary NFC chip embedded in the battery door. Unfortunately, Verizon will not allow the first Android 4.0 phone to access Google Wallet.
The reason for this is quite simple. Big Red is one of the companies involved with Google Wallet competitor ISIS, which also uses NFC technology. Others involved with ISIS include manufacturers HTC, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, RIM and Samsung. Other carriers inv...

The Increasing Power Of The Pirate Party
Like UnlikeMany people will have heard of the Pirate Party, founded in Sweden in 2006 to fight what some people see as the abuses of big media corporations fronted by their trade organizations such as the RIAA & MPAA to protect their copyrights against the claimed "devastation" that so-called "piracy" causes them. However, no one really took the Pirate Party seriously and saw them as just another fringe party. Then they had two members elected to the European Parliament in 2009. Now they have 9% of the vote in the latest Berlin state parliamentary elections. This level of success, is because they support important issues to do with freedom and lack of oppression from big corporations and governments, s...

CyanogenMod 9 Should Support Most CM7-Compatible Devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
In an update on the CyanogenMod blog today, Cyanogen gave us our first details on device support for the forthcoming Ice Cream Sandwich-based CyanogenMod 9: the first SoCs supported will be TI's OMAP 4, Qualcomm's MSM8660 and MSM7x30, and Samsung's Exynos. Support for NVIDIA's Tegra 2 tablets should also come early. As we reported previously, we should begin to see builds of CM9 for some devices as early as January.
While these newer chips will get early attention, Cyanogen said that support for most of the devices compatible with the Gingerbread-based CyanogenMod 7 would be forthcoming - he singled out Qualcomm's QSD8250 and the Google Nexus One as examples of what the team would be targeti...

EFF Seeks DMCA Exemption for Console Modders
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game Consoles
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is urging the U.S. Copyright Office to renew and expand exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that were granted last year in response to EFF's requests to protect certain modding rights. Specifically, EFF played a critical role in making it legal to "jailbreak" smartphones, and the organization wants the DMCA to grant the same freedom for electronic tablets and videogame consoles.
"In the exemption requests filed today, EFF asked the Copyright Office to protect the 'jailbreaking' of smartphones, electronic tablets, and video game consoles – liberating them to run operating systems and applications from any source, not just those ap...

Kobo offers one free book a month, brings peashooter to the e-reader gunfight
Like UnlikeFiled in: kobo
In a slightly underwhelming attempt to match Amazon's Lending Library proposition, Kobo will start to offer a free download each month to new Touch eReader owners. Starting in January, customers will be able to pick from the decidedly broad selection of Pride and Prejudice, HBR's 10 Must Reads: On Managing People and Star Wars Vs. Star Trek. Unfortunately, the offer is limited to devices purchased between November 24 and March 31 2012, but Kobo is hoping that the ability to hold on to the titles indefinitely will cancel out Amazon's legion of free rentals. Users can sign up to the ebook's offers mailing list for the full details. Remember: A book is for life, not just for Christmas.
