Amazon Student app lands on Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAmazonAndroid
Amazon continues its assault on mobile, as it is now bringing its student app to Android and this will enable kids to potentially save on those pricey textbooks.
The aptly named Amazon Student app will enable students to price-check textbooks by scanning the barcode and you’ll be able to buy it with one click. Using this app will also give students a free six-month Amazon Prime membership and this is pretty darn cool because it gives you free two-day shipping on all your purchases.

Verizon Wireless today said that its Long Term Evolution 4G network is fully operational today after it experienced disruptions across parts of the country on Wednesday. "Some 4G customers had reported intermittent or unavailable 4G service, or devices operating on 3G, for periods of time starting late Tuesday," said the company in a statement. "Throughout this time, all customers were able to make voice calls, send and receive text messages, and 3G data devices operated normally."

Samsung loses bid to block iPhone 4S sales in France
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAppleiPhone 4s
A French court on Thursday decided against issuing an injunction that would have barred Apple from selling the iPhone 4S in France, Bloomberg reports. The decision was part of a patent infringement complaint recently filed against Apple by Samsung, but Judge Marie-Christine Courboulay denied Samsung’s request. “The disproportionate character of the ban sought by Samsung against Apple is clear,” Judge Courboulay said in today’s decision, ruling that Samsung must pay Apple €100,000 for legal fees. The claim will move forward to be tried as a standard patent suit. Samsung filed a suit in October seeking to block sales of Apple’s iPhones in France and Italy, alleging that Apple’s smartphones inf...

Verizon and RedBox looking to partner to provide video service
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
There has been some recent talk about Verizon attempting to create some sort of Netflix competitor. At first glance, this seems like a very ambitious undertaking for Big Red, but with new information surfacing about a potential partner, it seems like a smart move that has the potential to be very successful.
TechCrunch has obtained information that Verizon is in talks with RedBox to create this service as a joint venture between the two companies. The service is codenamed Project Zoetrope and is intended to include subscription, streaming, and downloading service for TV and movies. Project Zoetrope looks to deploy on a variety of Internet-enabled devices such as iOS, Android, Google TV, Xbox...

T-Mobile begins sending out 'performance and stability' update for the HTC Sensation 4G
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCT-MobileSensation 4G
In our never-ending happiness of getting software updates, T-Mobile’s HTC Sensation 4G is the latest smartphone to see light of a new one that simply offers additional ‘performance and stability’ improvements – according to the carrier.
With this new software update, it brings the beloved handset to software version 1.50.531.31, however, it keeps its feet firmly on Android 2.3.4 and the HTC Sense 3.0 experience. Even though it doesn’t particularly come off as a major update, it’ll nonetheless provide some happiness to owners.
Now don’t fret if you haven’t received that notification just yet, seeing that it’s rolling out starting right now, and all the way through until January 15th. Certain...

Sony Ericsson explains Ice Cream Sandwich update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSony EricssonGoogleAndroid 4.0
Surprisingly close to when Motorola did it, Sony Ericsson laid out the process for updating its phones to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Basically, it’s going to take a while for Android 4.0 to land on Sony Ericsson’s phones but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working hard on it.
The company had previously said that 2011 Xperia devices like the Arc will definitely get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. It is very transparent about the process of getting this software on its devices, as this involves taking the open source version, adapting it to their custom user interface, testing it internally, getting it approved by carriers around the world, testing some more and then sending it out. In particu...

Everything Everywhere's £1.5 billion investment to bring 4G to Orange and T-Mobile in the UK
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileOrange
So far there have been some limited LTE trials, but the truth remains: UK 4G isn't happening any time soon. A fact not lost on Everything Everywhere CEO Olaf Swantee, who's raiding the coffers to a tune of £1.5 billion to bring the Orange and T-Mo UK up to speed. Top of the shopping list, naturally, is the network equipment needed, in time for when the spectrum eventually gets auctioned off -- currently expected to be late 2012. The cash injection is part of a three-year investment, so don't expect that minty fresh network any time soon, but UK users can at least take refuge in knowing that Swantee, and his brace of providers, are pushing to bring old Blighty decent data rates sooner rather ...

Google enhances Image Search for tablet users
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogle
Google is at it again, enhancing the user experience of Image Search for owners of iPads and Android tablets. The new features mostly center on touch-based interaction. Users only need to touch a thumbnail to see a full-sized image, and swiping left or right takes you to the subsequent images. Information on the full-sized image is now displayed in a more tablet-friendly format as well.
These updates build on other tablet-centric features introduced this summer, when Google increased the size of image previews, introduced continuous-scrolling thumbnails, and more rapid loading of thumbnails (which we imagine was needed to make continuous-scrolling a practical reality).

Sony Ericsson and Motorola Detail Android 4.0 Upgrade Path
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsTabletsGoogleAndroid 4.0
We've talked in the past about how OEMs take the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and use it to build software tailored for devices in the context of x86 optimizations, and today two partners are sharing some more details about their specific timelines for Android 4.0 releases. Those two are Sony Ericsson and Motorola, who have outlined in their respective blog posts the path from code to getting a fully baked ROM pushed out over the air to handsets.
The two posts describe the process as we've understood it for a while now, and with Android 4.0 things don't seem any different. Google works with a specific OEM and SoC vendor around some chosen reference hardware (in this case Galaxy Nexus)...

Bluetooth keyboards will get 10-year battery life with new chip, Broadcom promises
Like UnlikeFiled in: Keyboards
Broadcom is working on a Bluetooth chipset that will give wireless keyboards a battery life of up to 10 years, the company said on Tuesday.
If they had a battery life of as long as 10 years, that Bluetooth-based accessories could potentially never need new batteries, the chip maker said. A set of two AA batteries would be enough to power a keyboard using the BCM20730 Bluetooth chip to connect with a computer for its entire lifetime, Broadcom said.

Fuji Xerox to launch Dropbox-like cloud storage service for its copiers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Imaging DevicesXerox
Fuji Xerox will launch a new cloud storage service that hooks directly into its multifunction copiers next week, allowing documents to be uploaded by scan or fax, then edited or downloaded by computer or phone.
The "Working Folder" service will provide features similar to that of existing cloud services and standard file servers, with encryption, versioning and access control by user. But Fuji Xerox stressed its tight integration with a new line of copiers that will go on sale Monday, saving potential clients the hassle of linking up offerings from disparate companies or managing their own servers.
