Microsoft might withdraw from CES, to focus on self-run events like Apple

Apple’s success is evident recently, but unlike most other phone and PC makers, Cupertino is not participating in any of the major electronics shows like CES, MWC and CTIA. Now, we don’t consider this as good practice but the company has definitely built a name for itself and its zealous army of followers, so it has the attention and can afford this. Now, it seems its biggest PC rival Microsoft has decided to start following that example. At least, that’s what Mary Jo Foley of the Windows Weekly podcast got as an inside scoop.
Her source claims that 2012 will be the last year when Microsoft will have a big presence at CES with the traditional keynote served to the public by CEO Steve Ballmer...

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 showcased on YouTube

Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 showcased on YouTube

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Love to jailbreak but hate to tether every time you reboot? Then help could soon be at hand courtesy of hacker Pod2g. He just put out a video showing off a new exploit that continues to work on an iPod Touch even after it has been switched off and on. It appears to be running on iOS 5.0 rather than 5.0.1, so some downgrading might be called for. We don't know when it'll be released to the masses, or how long it'll last once Apple catches wind, but in the meantime there are of course various alternatives if you can stomach the risks and don't mind a bit of USB tomfoolery.

The two models that are not in the “lucky group” (of devices that will get the update) are Wave 525 and Wave 533, both of which are stuck on the version 1.1. However, not all is gloom and doom, with Korean giant preparing the so called “Value Pack” for these two devices.

Qualcomm unveils a pair of Snapdragon S4 chipsets

Qualcomm unveils a pair of Snapdragon S4 chipsets

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Qualcomm announced that it is adding a pair of new chipsets to its existing Snapdragon S4 family. Named MSM8625 and MSM8225, both chips incorporate a dual-core processor that tops at 1GHz, Adreno 203 graphics, and a 3G modem.
Thanks to their compatibility with older chipsets, such as the MSM7x27A and MSM7x25A, a phone manufacturer can start using the new chips in its Snapdragon S1-based handset designs without the need to alter them. That enables companies to quickly and efficiently produce budget-minded handsets that offer decent performance. The devices that will have the new chips inside them will most likely be marketed in countries that are currently transitioning to 3G wireless connect...

Qualcomm preps 1GHz Snapdragon S4s for dual-core upgrades

Qualcomm preps 1GHz Snapdragon S4s for dual-core upgrades

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

Qualcomm chose the Uplink expo to unveil a pair of Snapdragon S4 processors built expressly for boosting smartphones. Both the MSM8225 and MSM8625 are dual-core, 1GHz chips and use relatively modest Adreno 203 graphics, but are intended more for retrofitting. The two slot into the previous-generation MSM72x5A and MSM72x7A designs, letting a phone builder take an existing design and give it a big speed boost without having to engineer a completely new platform inside.
Both have 3G inside and are more likely to occupy budget smartphones. Qualcomm is helping to speed up the process of developing phones from scratch with the chipsets through a third-generation Qualcomm Reference Design platform ...

Bill Gates Might Return To Microsoft?

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

A article from Fortune surfaced just today (12/8), discussing the possible rumor of Bill Gates returning to the helm of Microsoft. According to Fortune a prominent chief executive heard from someone close to Gates that he might be contemplating such a move.
The company's stock price has been a thorn in Ballmer's side for a decade. At the end of 1999, Microsoft's best year for market price, shares were at almost $60. When Ballmer took over as chief executive in January 2000, the stock was still over $50. With the burst of the tech bubble, Microsoft's stock dropped steeply and hovered around $25 area through much of the decade, excepting a short rally above $35 in late-2007 and a dip under $20...

Bill Gates Building Nuke Plant for China

Bill Gates Building Nuke Plant for China

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

What do you do when you've run out of things to spend money on, and everyone already uses your software? How about developing a nuclear plant with China? Sure! Bill Gates is doing just that, the AP reports. For science?
Although Gates says his baby nuclear energy company, TerraPower, is having "very good discussions" with China regarding the plant, the fact that he's throwing in a billion dollars over 5 years sounds like more than talk. The plant, however, will be a "Generation IV" reactor, which for now exists only on paper—and the tech isn't expected to start materializing until for at least a decade. Gen IV cores are expected to be safer, more efficient, create less waste that fades earli...

Leaked BlackBerry Torch 9810 OS includes mobile hotspot

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

Following up on the recent leak of a BlackBerry Bold 9900 OS with a new mobile hotspot feature, another build for the BlackBerry Torch 9810 has recently found its way into the wild. After sideloading it through the BlackBerry desktop software, you would be able to share your HSPA+ connection with up to 5 nearby gadgets over Wi-Fi, which is something most smartphones have been doing for years now, but RIM’s still playing catch-up.
The BlackBerry Torch 9810 launched over the summer on AT&T, and the AWS-compatible version recently found its way to Wind Mobile, Mobilicity, and T-Mobile. It’s fairly high-end by RIM’s standards, even though the exterior of the device looks pretty much identical to...
