Acer to stick with tablets despite poor sales
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAcer
Acer will continue to launch new tablets in 2012 despite slow sales of the company’s current tablet models. Commenting on rumors that Acer might slow its tablet efforts in 2012 or even exit the emerging market completely, company founder Stan Shih stated that Acer would not be giving up on tablets just yet. He added that the company will continue to build smartphones as well, and that there are currently no plans to make personnel cuts in its tablet or smartphone divisions as had been previously rumored. Shih conceded that sales of Acer tablets have been poor thus far, DigiTimes reported, but the Taiwan-based computer vendor seemingly sees too much potential in the tablet market to give up. ...

Foxconn expanding iPhone production capabilities for 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleFoxconn
Foxconn, the company that assembles many of the mobile devices for Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Samsung, is dramatically expanding its factory in Zhengzhou, which currently produces up to 200,000 iPhones a day. When the expansion is complete, the plant would be the largest of its kind in the world, with 95 production lines capable of outputting a total of 400,000 iPhones per day.
It’s not known whether the entire expansion will be dedicated to iPhone production – Foxconn prefers to maintain the flexibility to change product lines quickly in response consumer demand – the Zhengzhou plant is the main iPhone production plant at the moment, and if iPhone demand continues to raise it is likely t...

Sony Ericsson reserves Xperia Ion name; could be for the LT28at flagship model
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony Ericsson
We recently reported on a possible flagship model for Sony Ericsson that appeared on the Bluetooth SIG site. With a 4.55 inch Reality display weighing in at 720p, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 13MP camera, this device promises to raise the bar in the Android world. The one thing about the phone that definitely needs to be changed is the code name LT28at that the unit has been branded with at the moment. We would imagine that a name change is coming since LT28at doesn't exactly roll off your tongue.
Actually, when Sony Ericsson starts its special presentation at the upcoming CES on January 9th, we might see this model rolled out as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ion. The joint venture filed fo...

Following the footsteps of Samsung and Sony, LG has come forth with details on which devices will be getting Android 4.0 -- also known as Ice Cream Sandwich -- and when we can begin expecting those upgrades to roll out. The phone manufacturer made its official announcement via its Facebook page, stating that several of its 2011 models will be on the receiving end of ICS starting in the second and third quarters of next year, with a full-scale rollout occurring sometime afterward.
In the second quarter we should expect to see updates for the LG Optimus LTE, Prada 3.0, Optimus 2X, Optimus Sol, myTouch Q and the Eclipse. Fast forwarding to the third quarter, the Optimus 3D, Optimus Black, Optim...

Google's rumored Nexus tablet could cannibalize sales of partner tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogle
Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt made comments during a press conference in mid-December that suggested his company was working on building its own Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. It’s entirely possible that Schmidt’s comments were taken out of context, so we’re still chalking the slate up as a rumor. If Google does in fact decide to launch a tablet, however, sources speaking to DigiTimes believe it could have an adverse affect on tablet sales for Google’s Android partners. DigiTimes’s sources said Google may deploy a newer Android 4.1 operating system on its tablets while forcing other vendors, such as Acer, Lenovo and Asus to launch devices powered by an older Android 4.0 build. As on...

Motorola Fire with two SIM card slots launched in Brazil
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaFIRE
Motorola is launching a dual-SIM version of its entry level Fire smartphone in Brazil. Aside from the additional SIM card slot, we don’t see any other changes under the hood. In that sense, expect the same 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen with full QWERTY keyboard beneath, 3-megapixel camera, 600MHz processor, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth, memory card slot, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show with Moto’s Switch UI singing on top.
In case you wonder, we’ve no idea whether this baby will be available in other markets. We also don’t know the price. However, we do know that even if it’s not released in the other parts of the world, you’ll most likely be able to grab yourse...

HTC Radar 4G appears on Microsoft's website looking like a Maitre d'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCRadar
The HTC Radar 4G is available from T-Mobile. Unlike most smartphones that are released these days, the device was originally launched in white, looking like it was dropped in some snow. That is what makes the picture of the phone found on Microsoft's website so interesting. The variant shown in the image on the Microsoft site has the same white border but the outer part of the device is black. The two-tone look gives the phone the appearance of a Maitre d' wearing a tuxedo.
We are not sure if HTC plans on issuing a version of the handset looking like this, or if it was just done for the website. We must admit to digging the look, even if it seems formal. In fact, this might be the first Wind...

Dell Streak 5 updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleMini 5Android 2.3
The Dell Streak 5, Dell's original smartphone/tablet hybrid, may be discontinued, but the company is doing good to support its customers, as it has just released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the 5-inch devices. We will excuse the tardiness of the update since the Streak 5 is dead product. The update offers version 1.5.1 of Dell's Stage UI interface and version 2.27 of the Swype keyboard. Owners can head to Dell's website to download the update now.

Republic Wireless does $19 per month unlimited everything, no catch
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Back in November we reported on the launch of a new MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) called Republic Wireless. Their key differentiator was that they’d give you unlimited talk, text, and data for just $19 per month. You couldn’t bring your own smartphone to the network, meaning you had to use the sole device they offered, the LG Optimus, and where things got murky is that you had to follow a strict set of rules. From our earlier report:

Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab not getting ICS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsTabletsSamsungGoogleGalaxy SGALAXY TabAndroid 4.0
Just recently, Samsung updated us on its Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update schedule and which devices are getting it and to our great disappointment the Samsung Galaxy S and the 7-inch original Galaxy Tab are not in there. The latest models of the company are, of course, getting the update: the Samsung Galaxy S II, S II LTE, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. But that’s little consolation for those owning Samsung’s 2010 flagship or Samsung’s first tablet.
Interestingly, the Nexus S, which is very similar to the Galaxy S, is getting ICS. Why is it so then that the Galaxy S is not? Samsung explains that it’s because of a combination of factors: usi...
