Mark Zuckerberg is Welcome in Vietnam, Facebook is Not

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

Most people make it a point to avoid places they or their loved ones aren't welcome, so the fact that Mark Zuckerberg chose Vietnam as the destination for his holiday getaway indicates that perhaps the trip was at least partially diplomatic. Officially, Zuckerberg, along with his girlfriend and a few friends, spent time in Hanoi simply for pleasure and not for business, but there are plenty of other places he and his entourage could have visited, ones where his social networking site is welcome with open arms.
In Vietnam, local communist authorities often block Facebook, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Tech savvy citizens are able to get around the block, but for the averag...

Gigabyte Rolls Out Crucial BIOS Update For Overclockers With X79 Mobos

Gigabyte Rolls Out Crucial BIOS Update For Overclockers With X79 Mobos

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

Pushing your PC to its limits has obvious inherent dangers; overclocking your CPU can definitely bust your rig if you push it too far. That being said, reasonable overclocking doesn’t actually carry too much risk – normally. Right before Christmas, one overclocker’s Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 mobo crashed, then burned (literally) in the midst of a lightweight stress test. After he posted the video on YouTube (the fun stuff happens in the last 20 seconds), Gigabyte looked into the problem, and apparently, it wasn’t a case of crap luck. Yesterday, Gigabyte’s Chinese branch announced the faulty CPU VRM is a widespread issue and recalled the GA-X79-UD3, GA-X79-UD5, GA-X79-UD7 and G1.Assassin 2 mobos. U...

There will also be a quad-CPU enabled Xeon E5 Socket 2011 version, a quarter later from now as vrzone reports.
Two QPI links on Socket 2011 CPUs do enable connecting each processor to TWO other ones, if you accept lesser inter-processor bandwidth compared to just dual-link pairing of two CPUs alone. There will be a separate Xeon E5-4600 series covering that particular market segment, which sits between the high end dual-socket E5-2600 and the enterprise RAS-enhanced even higher end E7 series (those fancy 10-core 30 MB L3 cache Westmere-EX chips and their followons).
These are good for uber-rendering workstations with many threads, as well ...

Google Nexus tablet could affect partner tablet sales

Google Nexus tablet could affect partner tablet sales

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsGoogle

As seems to happen often with reports from DigiTimes, this news sounds completely reasonable, but also completely overblown all at the same time. The new report says that the rumored Google Nexus tablet could have an adverse effect on other Android tablet sales when it is released. This in itself seems perfectly reasonable, because there is a niche audience that would love to see a Nexus tablet and would likely choose it over other options. But, that's just it: a niche audience.
The idea is that the Nexus tablet will likely come loaded with Android 4.1, which will not be available to other manufacturers and will have extra features that make the Nexus tablet more enticing than other Android...

Acer ICONIA TAB A200 is ready for purchase in the UK for $469 (£299), but won't ship until January 6

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

The wait is finally over for our UK friends, as they have the prime opportunity of purchasing the Acer ICONIA TAB A200 right now online. Sporting a price tag of $469 (£299), it falls in line to the previous rumor we heard about, but more importantly, it’s at a competitive price point that’s close to other similarly spec’d tablets out right now.
Naturally, it’s all fine and dandy that it’s available for purchase right now, but it’s mentioned to be delivered by January 6th. Needless to say, that “by” mention could mean many things – like possibly seeing it before January 6. Then again, you’re probably better off not thinking about it coming any earlier, so that your hopes won’t be dashed.

Italy’s Antitrust Authority has fined Apple Sales International, Apple Italia Srl and Apple Retail Italia a total of $1.2 million for “unfair commercial practices.” According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s Italy-based retail stores were fined €500,000 ($653,000) for not providing customers with adequate information about its AppleCare Protection Plan warranties, and an additional €400,000 ($523,00) for not being completely transparent about the length of product guarantees. The fines are a bit surprising, considering that Apple is typically praised for customer satisfaction in the United States. Apple has not commented publicly on the matter.

All GSM phones vulnerable to major security flaw, hacker says

All GSM phones vulnerable to major security flaw, hacker says

Posted on Dec 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

All GSM phones, such as those that run on T-Mobile and AT&T in the United States, are vulnerable to a major security flaw that could allow hackers to send text messages or place phone calls remotely using a new security flaw, one hacker said recently. Speaking to Reuters ahead of a hacking convention in Berlin, Karsten Nohl, the head of Germany’s Security Research Labs, said the attack could be initiated on a large scale, too. ”We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short timeframe,” Nohl explained. “None of the networks protects users very well.” Nohl didn’t provide details on how hackers could take advantage of the flaw, although Reuters said it’s likely that those attending ...

Did Anonymous make donations to charity using stolen credit card info?

Did Anonymous make donations to charity using stolen credit card info?

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Hacktivist group Anonymous reportedly claims to have stolen 200GB worth of email and credit card data in what is being called a weeklong, Christmas-inspired attack on multiple targets. The hacking movement plans to steal $1 million and give the money away as Christmas donations. That is, of course, depending on whom you believe.
Anonymous’ first target was Strategic Forecasting, known as Stratfor, a US-based security think tank whose client list includes the US Air Force, the US Army and the Miami Police Department. An email to Reuters on Sunday indicates that the site’s servers and email were suspended as soon as the breach was recognized. As of writing, Austin-based Stratfor’s website is d...

Is Anonymous Squabbling Over the Stratfor Hack?

Is Anonymous Squabbling Over the Stratfor Hack?

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Representatives from the global intelligence company Stratfor awoke to find a lump of coal in their stockings this morning—or, more specifically, their clients's credit card information strewn across the Web.
The incident is the latest cyber attack being claimed by members of the hacktivist group Anonymous, one that allegedly resulted in the publishing of nearly 4,000 credit card numbers, site passwords, and home addresses for some of the (formerly) confidential clients of the U.S.-based security firm.
The goal? The attackers indicated they were planning to use the stolen credit card information (allegedly stored as unencrypted text) to amass a sum of $1 million that could then be given to v...

Unofficial HTC Super Tool will unshackle a wide range of devices

Filed in: Cell PhonesHTC

Over on the xda-developer forums, user frigid has released what has been dubbed the HTC Super Tool, a utility which provides both root and an unlocked bootloader for a rather large set of HTC Android-based devices. Successful results have been reported with Sprint's EVO family (4G, Design 4G, 3D, Shift 4G), several T-Mobile myTouch products, the G2, Inspire, Sensation, and more. In addition, the latest version of Super Tool can also "de-Sense" compatible smartphones, removing the vast majority of HTC's OS customizations; the only remaining trace is the default lock screen.
It's easy to see how this could prove a compelling alternative to HTC's tool for unlocking the bootloader, which remains...

Boxee 1.5 nears release, will be final desktop version

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

We have some good news and bad news. The good news is: Boxee 1.5 will be entering public beta soon, with a proper release scheduled for January alongside Live TV. The update will finally bring the desktop software up-to-date and deliver the more streamlined UI found on the Boxee Box to your Windows, Mac or Linux computer. The bad news is: this will be the final version of the HTPCsoftware. Going forward Boxee plans to focus all of its efforts on streaming appliances, like its namesake Box and connected Blu-ray players and TVs. The software will also lack access to premium apps like Netflix, thanks to the tangled web of DRM woven by content providers. When CEO Avner Ronen said that the downlo...

RIM faces legal strife over BBM name

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Poor old RIM: even during the season of goodwill to all men, the company cannot catch a break and is being dragged back to court over the use of the BBM trademark.
BBM is shorthand for BlackBerry Messenger, RIM's 'Berry to 'Berry instant messaging service, but it's also the name of a Toronto-basee broadcast industry group called BBM Canada (obviously).
"We want our name back. I find it kind of amazing that this wouldn't have been thought about before they decided to use the name. The same thing goes for BBX," said Jim MacLeod, CEO of BBM Canada.

Chrome Engineer Explains Near Billion Dollar Investment in Mozilla

Chrome Engineer Explains Near Billion Dollar Investment in Mozilla

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Some people have been questioning why Google would dump nearly a billion dollars into a three-year search deal with Mozilla and its Firefox browser instead of leaving Mozilla high and dry after their existing agreement expired. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the new deal is three times higher than the previous one, and is more than Microsoft was willing to pay Mozilla to have Bing featured as the default search. Why give all that money to a competitor? That's the wrong question to ask, according to one of Chrome's developers.
Peter Kasting, a Senior Software Engineer and a member of the Chrome UI team, got all riled up after reading MG Sielger's "Pay to Stay" piece, in which Sielger...

Facebook Now Scours Your Account To Suggest Real-Life Events

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Facebook has just launched a new feature: Suggested Events. It scrabbles through your account history to find events you might like to attend in real life. But is that a great idea, or will it generate a bunch of irritating spam?
According to TechCrunch , the tool uses information from your Facebook check-in history, brand page activity, and the RSVPs of your online friends to compile a list of events. It also makes suggestions based on the music you listen to through Open Graph apps — presumably meaning that you'll see concert tips in the list, too.
The service seems similar to Foursquare's discovery tool Radar — but given the sheer weight of Facebook users, this will no doubt attract far m...
