Some more details have emerged relating to the newly-renewed search deal between Google and Firefox, with sources claiming that big G is set to send a minimum of $300 million (£191 million) Mozilla's way every year.
It seems that Microsoft was keen to replace Google with Bing as the default search engine on the Firefox homepage. Its bid is reported to have been aggressive but couldn't out-do the dominant search engine.
Yahoo is also reported to have been sniffing around the deal but could not compete financially.
No surprises
The new $300m deal is significantly higher than previous agreements between Mozilla and Google. All Things D reckons that Google provided around 84 per cent of Mozilla'...

HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

HP posts fix for LaserJet exploits

HP has posted a new driver update for its web-connected and networked LaserJet printers in an attempt to plug a malware explot. The was brought on after findings from Columbia University were revealed late in November. While no customers have reported attacks, HP claimed, the firmware upgrade would prevent them from happening in the first place.
HP still recommends common-sense tactics to lock down printers, such as securing putting them behind firewalls and disabling remote firmware uploads on exposed printers. Updating the drivers should make the printers secure against other currently known attacks as well.

Galaxy Tab 8.9 gets a taste of homemade Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

So we know that Google's latest and greatest OS is headed to the Galaxy Tab 8.9 at some undefined point in 2012. But Samsung's promise of a future update just isn't enough to sate the appetites of a certain enterprising subset of Android users. With their hunger for Ice Cream Sandwich guiding their hands, a trio of XDA members decided to whip up a homebrew version of 4.03 for their Sammy tabs. While the bootable builds, of which there are now three, are far from complete, an update over on the site's dedicated forum notes that Bluetooth, GPS, hardware acceleration and the accelerometer are now functioning, with efforts continuing to enable WiFi. If you were hoping to sample a slice of these ...

Intel chops some Sandy Bridge processor prices

Intel chops some Sandy Bridge processor prices

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Intel

Of all the parts inside the notebooks and other computers that we all use every day, one of the most expensive components is the CPU. As processors come down in price, the PC as a whole gets cheaper. Intel has announced that it will be cutting the price on some Sandy Bridge CPUs. Intel notified its partners of the price cuts that will be made on the Core i3 and Core i5 series parts.
The price cuts may be a way of helping to keep demand up as the Intel Ivy Bridge follow up gets ready to launch next year. DigiTimes cites sources at major notebook firms claiming that the processor prices are set to drop 10-15%. Prices on notebooks using the parts have been going down already with Asus and Acer ...

ASRock Aims to Ship 10 Million Motherboards in 2012

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MotherboardsASRock

ASRock is aiming to reach a milestone only two other companies have managed to reach, ASUS and Gigabyte, of shipping 10 million motherboards in an year. With shipments of 1.9 million motherboards in Q4 2011, ASRock will have shipped around 7.8 million motherboards in 2011, that's 13.3% short of its goal for 2011 of shipping 9 million boards. The markets of profitable high-end motherboards have been traditionally dominated by the likes of ASUS and Gigabyte, though ASRock has managed to make inroads to this segment with some competitively-priced products in 2011, note sources.
In 2012, with a more established brand, ASRock finds that 10 million goal realistic. Next year, Intel will launch its...

OnLive heads to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

OnLive heads to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play may have debuted to lukewarm reviews in 2011, but game streaming king OnLive has given it a reprieve by making its service available on the smartphone.
OnLive has managed to show the world that cloud gaming can actually work – especially on the big screen, where all you have to do is plug in its receiver to stream content.
Its launch on handheld devices earlier this month, however, was a harder sell. Yes you play premium games on a tablet but you have to use either fiddly virtual controls or and external joypad, which is decent but not perfect when your screen is no bigger than 10 inches.
Enter the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the only smartphone around with analo...

SOPA: the public debate

SOPA: the public debate

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

If you've been on the web in the past couple of weeks, you may know that the debate around the Stop Online Piracy Act has reached a fever pitch: petitions have been offered, scathing editorials written, boycotts proposed, and members of Congress have spent more than a dozen hours arguing and hurling insults at one another while teasing the public with shifting dates for the bill's debate. (If you don't know what SOPA is or what it does, be sure to check out our analysis.)
Of course, SOPA is just the latest incarnation of copyright law reform that Congress and others have been attempting to push through for some time, and the current debate has evolved from two bills that inspired much of the...

Sony Tablet S to get Android 4.0, but no release date yet

Sony Tablet S to get Android 4.0, but no release date yet

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Sony Ericsson has already jumped ahead of the rest of the Android manufacturer pack by committing itself to releasing Android 4.0 on a slew of smartphones and even going so far as to to release "preview ROMs" for several of them. On the tablet side, Sony looks like it's being equally aggressive. In a post on its official Sony forums in the UK, a staffer posted a message proclaiming that "Android 4.0 will be available for Sony Tablet." The language was a little vague, but a follow up post narrowed it down to the Sony Tablet S. Unfortunately, Sony didn't announce a time frame for release of Ice Cream Sandwich or even when it might announce a time frame, saying only that those details would "be...

New Kindle Fire root dodges Amazon's 6.2.1 update roadblocks

New Kindle Fire root dodges Amazon's 6.2.1 update roadblocks

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Amazon's attempts to close down root access on the Kindle Fire were skipped again after a new root app was published on Friday. The new version from Android Police uses a different approach altogether and is more universal. To date, it should patch not just the current Kindle Firs code but every version before it.
Implementing it requires a pair of apps and using Google's ADB to crack it.
The update, as usual, carries typical risks. It voids the warranty as long as it's active, and could potentially cause problems. Amazon will probably try to patch the exploit that allowed the root and, unlike with other Android tablets, can force the updates to come without permission.

Three Japanese wireless carriers join forces to promote internationally-compatible NFC systems

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Three Japanese wireless carriers — NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, and SoftBank — have announced that they're creating the Japan Mobile NFC Consortium to help ensure the smooth transition to internationally-compatible NFC systems. While NFC has been used in Japan for years, the contactless payment systems there use the Osaifu-Keitai standard, which is based on Sony's FeliCa RFID chips. The problem is that FeliCa-based systems are not compatible with the Type A and Type B standards that are being implemented around the world — a problem that this new consortium hopes to solve. As TechCrunch points out, in addition to making lives simpler for international travelers, the move may make it easier for Japanese...

Chinese hackers target U.S. Chamber of Commerce, sensitive data stolen

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

According to sources close to The Wall Street Journal, Chinese hackers are at it again, this time hitting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and capturing information from three million members. Those familiar with the matter told the WSJ that hackers stole around six weeks worth of emails regarding Asian policy, but may have had access to sensitive correspondences for as long as a year. The Chamber only learned it was under attack when the FBI sent an alert that servers in China were stealing information, although the exact amount of data stolen is unknown. After confirming the breach, the Chamber shut down and destroyed parts of its computer network, proceeding to revamp its security system over...

Google Books for Chrome now lets you read offline

Posted on Dec 27, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

So you're really enjoying War and Peace, but since you can't carry that tome around with you everywhere (it weighs like eight pounds, right?), you're reading whenever you get a chance on your smartphone, tablet, and laptop with Google Books. There's been one piece missing to that puzzle until now: unlike the phone and tablet apps, Google Chrome didn't offer offline reading. With a new update, you can hover over a book cover and click the "make available offline" checkbox, allowing you to read when you're stuck without an internet connection. It's especially good news for Chromebook users, as it gives them one more thing they can do without the internet. One thing to note, however: only EPUB ...

A Chinese web site is showing leaked photographs of the Huawei MediaPad running Android 4.0.1. While no definitive word has come out of Huawei yet, it certainly does indicate that the manufacturer plans on updating the tablet to Ice Cream Sandwich from the Android 3.2 build of the OS that was installed for the launch of the device. After the update, the tablet will have the ability to make voice calls and one of the leaked spyshots shows the dialer on the tablet.
So far, the Huawei MediaPad has been offered by one carrier in the U.S. where it is known as the T-Mobile SpringBoard. The 7 inch tablet (217ppi pixel density) has a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 processor under the hood along w...
