ASRock Develops three Cedar Trail-Based Mini-ITX Motherboards
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsASRockAD2700B-ITX
Intel's Cedar Trail platform may be ignored by US PC maker Dell but it's getting quite a bit of attention from Taiwanese company ASRock who's using it for no less than three HTPC-ready motherboards, the AD2500B-ITX, AD2700B-ITX and AD2700-ITX.
As it's evident from their name, these boards have a Mini-ITX form factor and come with a 32nm Atom processor pre-installed. The AD2500B-ITX is equipped with the Atom D2500 chip (two cores @ 1.86 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache) while the AD2700B-ITX and AD2700-ITX make use of the higher-clocked D2700 (2.13 GHz). All three models have a passive cooling solution for the CPU.

Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is now available for the Dell Streak 5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleAndroid 2.3Streak
Remember when the Dell Streak 5 brought big in a literally big way – with its still perceived to be monstrous sized 5” display? Yes, it has been long discontinued in the US, but nevertheless, it’s getting one snazzy update that no doubt brings some surprise.
Specifically, the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original Streak is now available and ready for the taking, thanks to the team over at xda-developers. With the sizable 155MB update, users are required though to have version 350 of the stock recovery installed on the device prior to installation. Once that’s all squared away, you’ll have your Dell Stream 5 transformed completely to an almost new device with Gingerbread.

Hasbro sues Asus over Transformer Prime tablet
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsASUSEee Pad Transformer Prime TF201
Don't say we didn't tell you so: Hasbro sued Asus over the name of its Transformer Prime tablet last week, in a federal district court. The toymaker is no doubt worried that the name could be confused with that of its Transformers franchise, not to mention Optimus Prime, the lead protagonist of the animation and film series... though we're not quite sure how a robot that transforms into a semi truck could be confused with a tablet and detachable keyboard. Perhaps Hasbro is worried that tablet buyers might see it as a licensed product. Hasbro has already sent out a generic statement about its willingness to "aggressively protect its brands," and we're reaching out to Asus right now. According...

Rambus, Broadcom sign licensing deal, agree to share toys
Like UnlikeIt never hurts to stop arguing, hug it out and agree on a patent licensing deal. Today, Rambus -- which has a history of litigating against chip makers it feels are have violated its intellectual property rights and filed a complaint against Broadcom to the International Trade Commission in 2010 -- signed a licensing deal that resolved previous claims for Broadcom's technology. In the statement, Rambus said it will license its patent for integrated circuits used in chips made by Broadcom. The company did not disclose any financial details related to the deal, or which technology would be part of the agreement, though Broadcom is typically renowned for its wireless networking chips which are ...

RIM Denies BlackBerry 10 Delay Allegations: Claims Are “Uninformed”
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
I’ll admit to lobbing a few mortars at RIM (alright, maybe more than a few), but it looks like things may be even worse than expected. BGR reported earlier today that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis lied about the the reason their first BlackBerry 10 devices would be delayed even later into 2012.
Lazaridis said during RIM’s recent earnings call that they were waiting for a specific dual-core LTE chipset to be available before their new BlackBerrys would see the light of day in late 2012. It was a strange announcement, considering that RIM has never really fared well in the specs arms race, although they I don’t blame them for trying. What I do blame them for is dragging their feet when it comes to...

Olympus raided over accounting scandal
Like UnlikeFiled in: Olympus
Offices and homes of executives connected to the Olympus accounting scandal have been raided by Japanese police. The move comes after a report commissioned by the company showed that losses of $1.7bn had been concealed for over a decade. However, the company did successfully file its amended accounts by the December 14th deadline imposed by the Japanese stock exchange to avoid being delisted. These restated accounts showed significantly reduced assets, and the company is now rumored to be planning to issue more shares in an attempt to raise money.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft’s decision that CES 2012 will see the company’s final keynote and booth at the January show may not have been as amicable as the press releases suggest, with suggestions that the company was “kicked out” of its keynote slot. According to GigaOm‘s insiders in Microsoft, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) that runs the tech show each year decided it no longer wanted the company to hold a keynote session, and in retaliation Microsoft yanked its booth plans.

Firefox Google Deal Gets Renewed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Early this month we mentioned that Google hadn't renewed the default search deal with Mozilla for Firefox. That deal made the bulk of the income Firefox generates. Neither Google nor Mozilla would comment on the deal that remained unsigned well past expiration.
Mozilla still expected search deals to make a bunch of its revenue showing it hoped the deal would be renewed. Google has now renewed the deal with Mozilla and while the terms were undisclosed I bet Google saved some money.

The people that updated to the new version while it was available are sorry that they did at this point. Apparently, the update doesn’t work well on the smartphone. The Nexus S users with the update are having battery drain issues.

HTC loses to Apple, several Android phones banned in the U.S.
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid
The U.S. International Trade Commission finally issued its decision on a patent dispute between Apple and HTC. The determination states that several of the manufacturer's Android-based handsets will be banned from sale and import in the United States on April 12, 2012. HTC says not to worry though -- they have a plan.
HTC dodged the bullet for 8 of the 10 patent accusations made in April, but those last two were still good enough to land an injunction from the ITC. The determination blocks several of HTC's Android-based devices from import and outright bans the sale of those devices in the U.S. It is currently unknown what exact phones are subject to the injunction.

Sony uses Wedding Invite site for CES 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
If you’ve ever been in the position we’re in as publishers headed to the Consumer Electronics Show for our umpteenth time in a row at the start of 2012, you know there’s one whole heck of a lot of invites headed our way – thats why if a group wants to stand out, they’ve got to be unique – that’s just what Sony’s done with no less than a wedding e-vite for that very purpose. What this wedding is supposed to be is a tie between Internet and TV (by Bravia), and the whole shebang is here, photos, “about us”, and everything in between. Not that we weren’t going to go see Sony at the show, but we’re doubly excited to attend now!
