Chinese hackers reportedly breached the US Chamber of Commerce

Posted on Dec 22, 2011 by MG1

Hackers in China have recently gotten attention for reportedly attempting to steal industrial technology secrets and hacking US satellites, and now a Wall Street Journal report claims Chinese citizens were discovered hacking US Chamber of Commerce in May of 2010. The first breech is believed to have occurred in November of 2009 or even earlier, giving the hackers at least six months of administrator-level access to the Chamber's network. It isn't know (or wasn't revealed) exactly how much information was stolen; the Chamber says that fewer than 50 of its members were compromised, but they also said the hackers stole at least six weeks of emails from four individuals who worked on Asia policy...

It may not be the biggest update, but for those who have found a lot to love with Google Currents, the new update should make your experience even nicer with various stability fixes and a big fix for refreshing content. Google Currents has only been in existence for about two weeks, but it has been a product on Google's radar for much longer. The product started life as a threat. Google attempted to purchase Flipboard, and when the company refused the offer, Google said if the company didn't sell, it would build its own competitor. That competitor was codenamed Propeller and launched as Google Currents.
It's definitely a solid app, but as with all apps, it came with some bugs and troubles. ...

Verizon confirms 4G LTE service back to normal

Verizon confirms 4G LTE service back to normal

Posted on Dec 22, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless has issued a statement concerning the reported data outage across the country from earlier this morning and it says that service is returning to normal.
Users reported difficultly connecting to the 4G LTE or 3G CDMA networks on both sides of the country, and we indeed did have trouble in Pennsylvania this morning. Verizon claims that the issue was related to the 4G network and not the 3G one, but we couldn't connect to either for a spell. It now seems that things are back to normal, as we have been able to connect to both LTE and CDMA services.

Firefox for Android redesigned for Honeycomb tablets

Firefox for Android redesigned for Honeycomb tablets

Posted on Dec 22, 2011 by MG1

Firefox for Android has been updated to version 9.0 which brings a number of improvements to the browser, not least of which is a redesign for Honeycomb Android tablets. The increased speed of updates with Firefox has led to some less than impressive version jumps on the desktop version, but this update for mobile looks like it's worth the version number jump.
As always, Firefox for Android has been working hard to make startup faster, so that's the first on the list of improvements in this update. Another really cool feature is that websites will now be able to access your mobile device's camera, which could lead to some pretty interesting options. But, the big change this time around is a...

Verizon addresses concerns over Cox spectrum deal

Posted on Dec 22, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

As we reported last week, Verizon entered into an agreement with Cox Communications to obtain its 20 MHz AWS spectrum license for $315 million dollars. Verizon and Cox also entered into an agreement to offer each other’s services to their respective customers.
It has since been reported that the U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing the deal for potential anti-trust violations. DoJ spokeswoman Gina Talamona confirmed the examination, but refused to elaborate further. It should be noted that regulatory review of spectrum purchases of this magnitude are not in and of themselves unusual.
Speaking to Bloomberg, consumer advocacy researcher Mark Cooper claimed that the deal “diminishes competit...

Updating the handset to webOS 2.2.4, the maintenance update brings nothing more than some of the customary bug fixes to improve its usability. Last week Sprint, AT&T, Samsung, and HTC responded to Senator Al Franken's request for more information on how they were using Carrier IQ on their customers' phones, and to what extent it was deployed. Yesterday, T-Mobile and Motorola submitted their responses to the letter.
T-Mobile says that it uses Carrier IQ on some of its high-end smartphones, including the HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S II. It estimates that there are approximately 450,000 devices in use on its network that report data collected from Carrier IQ software. As with the other carriers, T-Mobile says that it does not collect the content of text messages and emails sent and received with devices, but it does note that...

Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise Pangolin' to Feature Power Management Improvements

Ubuntu’s declining popularity was a hot topic on the Internet recently, with a number of sites using Distrowatch's annual web rankings to ring alarm bells for the popular Linux distro. But there were those who looked askance at these reports -- and quite rightly so, accusing them of grossly exaggerating the extent of Ubuntu’s alleged decline. Whatever be the true extent of its decline, the fact is Ubuntu is still a very popular Linux distro and Canonical will have another chance of redeeming itself with Precise Pangolin in a few months’ time.
What better way of regaining lost ground than by luring back users with new features and enhancements. Ubuntu kernel engineer Colin King discussed one ...

A little earlier today, we showed you pictures of AMD's first Radeon HD 7900 series single-GPU PCB that makes use of digital-PWM power delivery. Some of the first batches of Radeon HD 7900 graphics cards will stick to that PCB and board design, as it's backed by AMD's engineering. Even as the SKU's launch is less than 24 hours away, there are pictures of AMD's cost-effective Radeon HD 7900 PCB surfacing on Asian media sites. Once ready, AMD add-in board partners can opt for this cost-effective PCB if they want to fine-tune their prices. It looks like AMD is ready well ahead to face competition from NVIDIA, with its GeForce Kepler 104 (GK104) GPU.

Lenovo's education-oriented ThinkPad x130e was supposed to launch yesterday, but now the company's website is saying that we should expect the knock-proof tablet to arrive in February next year. Engadget spoke to a rep from the firm and was told that the delay was due to the laptop's popularity with school districts, which have collectively bought the entire first manufacturing run.

The 11.9-inch laptop is designed for use by K12 students, with a rubber bumper on the outer shell to offer some protection from dings and scrapes, reinforced hinges, ports, and bezel corners, a choice of lower-end processors from Intel and AMD, an 8.5-hour battery, and Lenovo's RapidBoot technology to make sure ...

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.

The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

Beleaguered Olympus plans to develop a new mirrorless camera with an "epoch-making" viewfinder, and has already started work on a successor to the E-5 DSLR. Olympus's director of marketing, Haruo Ogawa, revealed in an interview with Digital Camera Magazine of Japan that the company is making the viewfinder a priority based on customer feedback, though the new cameras will retain compatibility with the current PEN Micro Four Thirds line. Ogawa also expressed a desire to move away from what he sees as the "feminine" styling of PEN models and create a camera for both men and women — while Westerners may not consider the classically-styled PEN line particularly feminine, in Japan the cameras hav...
