Sony Tablet S Ice Cream Sandwich update coming "soon"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSonyGoogleTablet SAndroid 4.0
Sony UK used its online forum to say that the Ice Cream Sandwich updated for one of its tablets, Tablet S, is coming “soon.” Unfortunately, they weren’t too specific, leaving us pondering what exactly that “soon” means. Is it the first quarter, the second one? It’s really hard to tell, but we do hope Sony, as a reputable company that is focusing a ton of energy on Android, will release the new software update sooner rather than later…
And before I let you go, I have a Tablet S-related confession to make. I find it to be one of the best 10.1-inch Android tablets out there. Simply put – it fits perfectly into the hand, making reading content on it an awesome experience. In other words, that “m...

Verizon 4G LTE suffering nationwide outage for third time this month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon Wireless users are once again suffering from a widespread 4G LTE and 3G EV-DO data outage. The outage is the third one of the month and only seems to be affecting users with 4G LTE devices. A recording on Verizon’s support line reveals that the company is aware of the issue and working to fix it, but no indication was given as far as when service might be restored. We have received reports stating that service is out across the country, with confirmed outages in parts of New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and other regions.
UPDATE: Verizon Wireless issued BGR the following statement on the outage: “We are investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4G...

HP's supposed asking price for Palm and webOS? a laughable $1.2 billion
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPwebOS 3.0
According to Venture Beat, HP tried to sell webOS and Palm, but couldn’t find a buyer willing to pay HP’s exorbitant asking price of $1.2 billion. HP apparently wanted to reduce its losses by selling Palm at the same price it paid for the company back in 2010.
This value might be reasonable if HP actually did something to improve the platform, but, sadly, the company failed to do anything significant with webOS. HP released the Pre 3 and the Veer, two lackluster handsets that failed to excite consumers. The Touchpad took the retail world by storm, but only after HP dropped the price of the tablet to a rock bottom $99. The Touchpad launched with a starting price tag of $499 for the 16 GB mode...

Anonymous threatens publication of 2.7 million private emails
Like UnlikeHacker group Anonymous has revealed its latest gambit - the publication of 2.7 million confidential emails stolen from US analyst company Stratfor.
According to the company, the attack happened on Christmas Eve. Stratfor has announced it has brought in independent security consultants to strengthen its systems against attack.
The collective clearly hopes to embarrass the company, who produce analysis for subscribers, including banks and oil companies.
Anonymous has published some of the emails already and is threatening to post the rest. "Just a small preview of the mayhem to come," said a message with the posted sample.

Pentagon approves one Android device, still testing iOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 5
It's just one more sign that BlackBerry is falling fast. Now, the US Pentagon has approved a modified Android device for use in the Department of Defense and is testing iOS devices for use as well. BlackBerry had always been the top choice for all government departments because of security concerns on other platforms, but those days are over.
The Pentagon has approved just one single Android device though. The Dell Venue is the only device to make the cut, and even then, it must be running Android 2.2 and have the Android Market removed before it can be used by DoD staff. Additionally, any web browsing done on the device must be routed through the DoD proxy server.
The Pentagon is still te...

Microsoft Found Cause For Messaging Bug, Testing Fix
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
Microsoft apparently found the root cause of the messaging bug and is currently testing a fix.
Two weeks ago, WinRumors revealed the bug, which would crash the device and kill the messaging app upon receiving a special text message, and contacted Microsoft with the details, including the specific text which otherwise has not been published.
Now Microsoft apparently contacted Khaled Salameh, who originally found the bug. He tweeted that Microsoft’s security team “confirmed the WP7 SMS Bug and found the root cause, a fix is currently under testing”.
However, it should be noted that this bug seems to be common across a wide range of Microsoft products using its Silverlight/WPF framework, which ...

Anonymous targets specialforces.com, releases personal data
Like UnlikeAnonymous has had a busy Christmas week with news about its AntiSec arm breaching security think tank Stratfor's servers and reports about the group making donations to charity with stolen credit cards. Now it appears that Anonymous also targeted specialforces.com as part of its aptly titled LulzXmas festivities.
The hacker collective released the credit card and personal information, including names and addresses of those ordering products from the site on Pastebin yesterday. They also took opportunity to further embarrass Stratfor over their confusion as to whether their data was encrypted or not.
"To be fair, at least SpecialForces.com DID store their customers’ credit card information us...

CyanogenMod Compiler project allows Android tweakers to easily make custom blends
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Ever wish that building your own personal ROM was as simple as placing an order at Starbucks? Well, an intrepid coder known as lithid-cm has taken that vision one step closer with the CyanogenMod Compiler (CMC), a command line utility that allows armchair mixers to remove unwanted features and then compile their own special blend of CyanogenMod. While CMC's functionality is currently rather limited -- which allows users to eliminate languages, wallpapers and tweak themes -- the developer will introduce new installation / removal features and additional plug-in support in future releases. The software is early alpha stage, which means its creator needs the help of others to identify and resol...

Samsung Galaxy S might not get ICS, just a 'Value Pack' instead
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGalaxy SAndroid 4.0
This whole thing with the Samsung Galaxy S and Tab getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update has been a roller coaster to say the least. Remember, Samsung last Friday announced the two devices wouldn’t get the ICS bump, to then only backtrack on it yesterday thanks to scrutiny from the Android community. Now the latest rumor suggest that the Korean manufacturer is cooking up a Value Pack update for the smartphone, which should bring enhancements to make the Android 2.3 platform similar to what you’d get with Ice Cream Sandwich (new widgets, camera improvements, improved web browsing and etc), according to a new report from Korea.

Seiko Epson settles Nokia antitrust lawsuit for $80 million
Like UnlikeFiled in: EpsonNOKIA
In another case of LCD manufacturers getting into hot water over price fixing, Seiko Epson announced that it's settling an antitrust lawsuit brought by Nokia back in November of 2009 to the tune of $80 million. The allegations against Epson and its subsidiaries are just one of many leveled by Nokia, with similar suits filed by the company against Samsung, Toshiba, Sharp, LG Display, and others. The LCD industry seems to be regularly hit by these allegations, and earlier this month the South Korean government fined manufacturers including Samsung and Sharp $388 million over similar offences. Epson says in a statement that this settlement is not a sign of the company admitting wrongdoing; rath...

With Ivy Bridge chipsets receiving USB 3.0 certification recently, Intel is now all set to support the technology natively with its next-generation processor platform. But it isn’t the only data transfer technology that Intel plans to support. According to a new report, Intel’s Thunderbolt technology will strike the PC market in April 2012.
The chipmaker is said to have notified its partners across the PC industry about its intention to fully roll out the Thunderbolt I/O technology next year; it’s currently restricted to a few Apple products. As per Digitimes’ sources, a number of A-list PC vendors are already on board and getting ready to launch Thunderbolt-compatible motherboards, laptops ...
