Samsung plans to sell 374 million phones in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
Although Samsung had an excellent 2011 in terms of mobile phone sales, the company has even bigger plans for the next year. According to Korea Economic Daily, the Galaxy S maker jacked up its sales projection by 15%, which translates into about 374 million handsets. What’s more, of the total figure, 150 million units are expected to be smartphones. In other words, we should expect an array of new Sammy smart devices being unveiled throughout the year — though most of them will be launched at the CES in Las Vegas and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
So if everything goes as planned, the Korean giant will make one more step closer to Nokia (market leader), which is projected to sell some 39...

Is Verizon having problems activating new phones?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
It has been a tough week for Verizon with a pair of outages on its LTE network on December 21st and December 28th. A Verizon spokesman attributed the problem to the company being the pioneer in providing LTE service and as you know, the pioneers are the ones with the arrows in their back. And things might be only getting worse tonight as a growing number of posts on Big Red's support forum say that those buying new phones are having problems getting them activated on Verizon's network.
Out of five pages on the forum, all but one post was about a problem getting a newly purchased phone to get activated on Verizon. There is speculation that the problem has to do with a batch of Apple iPhone 4S...

ASUS intros USB MS-100 speakers, HS-W1 headset
Like UnlikeFiled in: HeadphonesASUSHS-W1
Computer maker ASUS has just introduced two new USB audio products for notebook and desktop computers with the HS-W1 Wireless USB Headset and MS-100 speakers. The headsets have 70mm leather earpads for comfort and use 2.4GHz wireless tech that offers up to 50 feet of range. Users need to plug in a small USB dongle to send CD-quality wireless audio.
There are 40mm drivers and a built-in equalizer in each earpad, along with a noise-filtering microphone. A rotate-to-mute design is more intuitive than a small button, ASUS believes, as are the large on-ear volume controls. The built-in battery is said to offer up to eight hours of running time. The headphones fold and weigh 170 grams (0.37 pounds...

Wi-Fi Protected Setup attack tools released to public
Like UnlikeFiled in: Networking Devices
A lot has happened since we reported on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) vulnerability found by Stefan Viehbock yesterday. It seems security firm Tactical Network Solutions (TNS) had independently discovered the vulnerability, working on it for nearly a year. On hearing of Viehbock's discovery, TNS released its open source Reaver tool for exploiting the vulnerability, partly as a way to draw attention to a commercial version of the software. This was followed shortly thereafter by Viehbock releasing his own WPSCrack tool in reply. Both tools are able to crack WPS PINs — Viehbock's in as little as two hours, TNS's in four to ten — after which both tools allow an attacker to easily recover the ...

PS Vita Content Manager app forces firmware upgrade?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony hasn't wasted any time getting firmware updates out of the door for its newly-released PlayStation Vita, and some users are reporting that the company is being a little pushier than usual in making sure users upgrade. If a post at Wololo is to be believed, running the Vita's Content Manager software under out-of-date firmware will prompt you to update to the latest version, and the app won't work until you do so. We're unable to confirm this ourselves, as our Vita is already at Version 1.510, but it wouldn't surprise us — the PSP and PS3 often lock access to features such as the PlayStation Store for users who haven't updated their firmware. This case is a little different, though, in t...

Sprint to get white Samsung Epic 4G Touch on January 8th
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungEpic 4G Touch
It is too late to be dreaming of a White Christmas, but not too late to be dreaming of a white Samsung Epic 4G Touch. SprintFeed obtained from a source an internal document that shows a photograph of the phone with the January 8th launch date. Other than the different color, everything remains the same. Out of the 3 major carriers in the U.S. that carry a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, Sprint's Epic 4G Touch is the only one that has the 4.52 inch Super AMOLED display and the dual-core 1.2GHz Exynos processor. The white Epic 4G Touch will be available at all Sprint locations.

Anonymous hacks online military gear supplier
Like UnlikeAnonymous has hit an online supplier of military goods operated by a former special forces Lt. Col. named Dave Thomas. The hacker group was able to infiltrate the server of the supplier and claims to have stolen about 20,000 credit card numbers and passwords from the servers of the website. Anonymous posted to Pastebin claiming the hacking victory.
Anonymous said that it has stolen 14,000 passwords to accounts and 8,000 credit card numbers for the users. All of the data was apparently encrypted, but that encryption was no help since Anonymous stole the encryption keys from the servers too.

Verizon Will Charge You Extra to Pay Your Bill Online

Service outages have made Verizon customers grumpy the past few days. They probably won't be any happier about a leak from Droid-Life and confirmed by Phonescoop that Verizon's going to start charging a $2 "convenience fee" for paying your bill online or by phone starting January 15th.

Gigabyte X79-UD3 and Core i7-3930K Set Records with New F7 BIOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUMotherboardsGIGABYTEIntelCore i7-3930kGA-X79-UD3 (rev. 1.0)
It's been a tough week or so for Gigabyte marketing. It had to admit that quite a few people had burned their motherboards, to which it offered free replacements, and isolated the problem to faulty firmware. There has been talk that this firmware cripples overclocking by throttling CPU clock speed under extreme stress. Gigabyte set out to do some myth-busting. Renowned overclocker and Gigabyte PR guy HiCookie set up a test-bench using Core i7-3930K, an "infamous" X79-UD3 motherboard running the latest version F7 BIOS, and a typical extreme-cooling bench.
HiCookie achieved 5643.2 MHz clock speed, using a base clock of 99 MHz, 57.0x multiplier, and CPU voltage of 1.584V. The rest of the test-...

Latest update brings TouchWiz to Verizon's Galaxy Tab 10.1
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungVerizon WirelessGALAXY Tab 10.1
When Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 first launched earlier this year it was running a stock version of Honeycomb. At CTIA 2011, the South Korea-based vendor showed off its TouchWiz user interface and promised an update for tablets in the near future. While Wi-Fi versions of the slate were updated soon after the announcement, Verizon’s LTE variant was left untouched — until now. Verizon is currently pushing an over-the-air update that brings TouchWiz along with other fixes and improvements to the Galaxy Tab 10.1. TouchWiz includes numerous custom widgets, a mini app tray, and various “Hubs” for social media, reading, and music and videos. Other additions for the device include support for DivX vid...

Apple not introducing third-generation tablet at MacWorld next month according to site
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Yesterday, we passed along a story about some sources telling DigiTimes that Apple would be introducing a pair of tablets next month at the MacWorld show. We told you to take the story with a grain of salt because some of the story sounded too good to be true. For example, expecting an 8MP camera on the next iPad as the DigiTimes story says, seems to be too much to ask for.
Now, multiple sources are telling The Loop that the DigiTimes report is "completely false". The Loop's Jim Dalrymple said that his tipsters are telling him that Apple will not be introducing a high-end Apple iPad 3 and a mid-range tablet possibly called the Apple iPad 2S at the MacWorld show in January, or at next month'...

Verizon says "Growing Pains" responsible for LTE outages
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon's VP of network engineering is a chap by the name of Mike Haberman. Mr. Haberman was explaining why Verizon has had three outages this month on its 4G LTE network and says that as the pioneers in the industry, it will suffer from growing pains. On a more technical level, the outages were due to bugs in Big Red's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) core. The first outage on December 7th was due to the failure of its back-up communications database. The December 21st outage occurred because of an unresponsive IMS element. The third outage took place on December 28th and the fault was the failure of two IMS elements to communicate properly.
Once the problems were corrected, the bugs did not r...

HTC updates bootloader unlock utility to support latest Android lineup
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
It wasn't long ago that HTC's bootloader unlock utility hit the masses, thereby righting the company's silly decision to lock its phones down in the first place. Now, continuing its commitment to mod-lovers and those who appreciate freedom, The House of Chou is announcing that its latest lineup of Android phones can find a similar (and proper) fate. The company has released an updated bootloader unlock tool that supports all Android devices released after September of this year. Naturally, this includes such handsets as the HTC EVO Design 4G, Rezound, Rhyme and Vivid. The company has yet to release an updated list of supported devices, but promises to do so in the coming days. While we're st...

Expert: Apple could get $10 for each Android device sold
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Talking with Bloomberg, Kevin Rivette, the managing partner at intellectual property firm 3LP Advisors LLC says that Apple stands to profit greatly if it were to license its patents to Android manufacturers. Rivette says that Apple were to license its patents to those producing Android devices instead of suing them, the Cupertino based firm could be in line to receive $10 for each device sold that is powered by Google's open source OS. Currently, Microsoft receives $5 in licensing payments for each HTC produced Android device.
Taking the licensing approach, Microsoft has deals worked out with HTC, Samsung, ACER and Viewtronics while still fighting Motorola Mobility and Barnes and Noble in c...
