Nintendo, Sony back off of SOPA support

Filed in: SonyNintendo

A quiet update to the list of Stop Online Piract Act supporters (PDF) has shown that Nintendo and Sony have backed away from the proposed bill. Both were originally endorsing the bill as of November but quietly removed themselves from the list sometime in the past month. Neither has acknowledged the change in attitude.
Game developer EA has also dropped its SOPA support.
All three have an interest in curbing piracy of their games. They may have withdrawn support after seeing the full consequences of the bill, which could see site taken down or blocked if even just a small portion of its content was deemed illegal. As drafted, it would also compromise Internet security by taking apart the DNS...

GoDaddy Officially Opposes SOPA, Sees 'Spike' in Domain Transfers

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

Internet registrar GoDaddy on Thursday officially came out against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), basically arguing that the bill is currently too polarizing.
"GoDaddy opposes SOPA because the legislation has not fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities," CEO Warren Adelman said in a statement.
GoDaddy previously withdrew its support for SOPA but said it would support the legislation "when and if the Internet community supports it." Now, the company has officially opposes SOPA as well as similar legislation in the Senate known as the PROTECT IP Act.
The statement was released the same day that rival registrar Name...

Floodgates, however, are still not widely open, since the new ROM requires Samsung Kies software and can’t be installed over the air. What’s more, we’re not sure every Galaxy S II user can get its Android 4.0 fix — Kies software updates are known to target select markets so you may not see it just yet.

Last time when we heard about Steve Troughton-Smith was when he unveiled the internal codenames behind a number of iOS releases. He is also famous for his work on porting Siri to the iPhone 4. Are you curious about what he is keeping himself occupied with now? More hacking, of course!
With some help from fellow iOS expert The Mudkip, Troughton-Smith successfully hacked an Apple TV into running iOS applications. And in case you are wondering, AirPlay is not used in the process – the apps run on the Apple TV itself and are scaled up to 720p resolution. Jailbreaking the device was necessary in order for the hack to be pulled off, as well as installing some custom software that allows iPhone and...

Tablet S gets $100 haircut from Sony

Tablet S gets $100 haircut from Sony

Posted on Jan 03, 2012 by MG1

Sony is greeting 2012 by cutting $100 off the price of its Sony Tablet S. The more traditional of the manufacturer's two tablets, the haircut brings the 16GB model to $399.99 and the 32GB version to $499.99. There is no indication that Sony is cutting the price in order to clear inventory nor is there any sign that the Japanese tech giant is planning a sequel that it needs to clear room for. In fact, the company recently confirmed that both of its tablets will be getting updated to Android 4.0.
There is some speculation that the Sony Tablet S was in need of a price cut considering that it had failed to break into the top five tablets not named Apple iPad. But with its original pricing simila...

Verizon Admits To 4G LTE "Growing Pains

It hasn't been an awesome month for Verizon customers using an LTE-equipped phone. There have been three outages this month alone.
The most recent instance happened this week, Verizon confirmed, blaming it on an unexpected glitch.
It has been a frustrating month for the carrier's growing base of high-end 4G LTE phones. Not only has the fast-speed network become inexplicably unplugged three times, but the outages also took down 3G connectivity for 4G-equipped devices.

Verizon's announcement that hey, no biggie, but they're going to charge you two dollars a month just for paying your bill online didn't just catch our attention. It's also apparently perked up a few ears at the FCC, where hopefully glorious, government-appointed justice will rain down on our carrier oppressors.

LG and Intel are at it again, showing off another mobile device at the Consumer Electronics Show. The two companies teamed up for CES last year and showed off an Android smartphone running on Intel’s Moorestown chipset, which was ultimately scrapped. LG and Intel will be showing off a second Intel-powered smartphone during this year’s CES, according to the Korea Times. The mystery device will be running Google’s Android operating system and powered by Intel’s new Medfield chipset. However, not everyone is optimistic about LG’s future with Android. “Personally, I doubt that LG Electronics will release phones running on Android software based on any Intel platform,” an LG executive who asked n...

Android 4.0 update hell makes NoDo look like heaven

Posted on Jan 02, 2012 by MG1

The NoDo update, which brought copy and paste to Windows Phone, was a low point for the OS, with the update taking about 3 months to roll out to all handsets.
Now Fudzilla has written an article calling the Android 4 update a joke. The OS update was first demoed in May 2011, and released in October 2011.
Since then the only one device with the OS has been released, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and one handset, the Samsung Google Nexus S, has received the update.

While spoiled brats around the world cried on Twitter last week because they didn’t get an iPad for Christmas, there many people who can’t even fathom the cost of an iPad. That is why a joint venture between London-based DataWind and the Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan was created to create the Aakash.
The Aakash is the world’s cheapest touch-screen tablet. It only costs $50 to manufacture and usually retails for $60. In order to make technology more accessible to the poor, the Indian government is now subsidizing the Android-based device to students in the nation. The final cost – just $35.

Google could be counting Android devices by Google services activations

Google could be counting Android devices by Google services activations

Posted on Jan 02, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Every once in a while, we’re hearing an update from Android chief Andy Rubin about Android activations. Recently, the number zipped past the staggering 700,000 Android devices activated each day and over the Christmas weekend that number soared to 3.7 million. But what exactly is an “Android device” and how does Rubin and Google count it?
A vague explanation came from the man running the Android project earlier when he posted on Google+:
“...and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don't count re-sold devices), and "activations" means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”
But what about the tablets that are sold...

Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile pops up on eBay

Posted on Jan 02, 2012 by MG1

One way to get your hands on the Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile is to sit tight and wait until January 11 when the smartphone is scheduled to be released. The handset will be priced at $50 after rebate should you sign a 2-year service agreement with the carrier. However, if you are not of the patient kind, or if the contract part of the deal you are not too fond of, what might interest you is the T-Mobile Lumia 710, which is currently for sale on eBay.
Currently, the highest bid stands at $355, which is a reasonable price for a mid-range Windows Phone handset. Besides, you don't need to put your signature under 2-year contracts or anything. Judging by the item's description and the attached im...
